  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi All,

In the last 5000 miles, I've used 3 quarts of good
quality 5W 30 synthetic oil. I change oil every 5000 and prior to this, have only used about 1 qt. per 5000 miles. There are no signs of leakage in my garage, and the outside of my engine splash shield shows no signs of leakage. No visible leakage in engine compartment (3.8 liter engine). Ideas as to the problem appreciated!

I've seen claims that running this for three or four oil changes sometimes helps reduce consumption.

How many miles on the engine? There could be different reasons if it has 35,000 vs 135,000 miles. Wear happens too.

Mileage is 85, 500, I'm original and senior owner and drive like a senior. The issue for me is the sudden and substantial increase in oil consumption during the past 6 months/5000 miles-70% city driving under 40 mph. Yes, wear occurs and has occurred, but why a sharp and recent increase? My driving habits haven't changed. Car is at dealer for oil change and examination. Will keep everyone posted and should get it back tomorrow.

It will most likely come down to a failed (clogged) PCV valve or carbon-ed stuck oil control rings.

joegr, thanks for your thoughts about this matter. My dealer doesn't think the PCV valve is likely to be the problem, and wants me to return after 1000 miles to see if oil consumption is still excessive. They are telling me that they won't do anything unless I'm using more than 1 quart per 1000 miles. As for using the Valvoline, that's not the oil they use and I want to keep having them do my oil changes to ensure they will honor the 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty.

This is not to beat on this, I respect your decision. Be aware that the suggestion isn't to use that oil long term, only for a few changes to clean the rings off. They absolutely can't/won't void your warranty for using better oil.
