  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Out of the blue car runs very rough. Engine light comes on, pop-ups telling me some kind of event just happened.
Got a generic code about oxygen sensors. Getting too rich or slow information. Had the dealer under a platinum warranty replace oxygen sensors. Fine for a week, same problem all over again. I smell exhaust in the cabin, very little power and running. Very rough at times. Vibrating the whole car.
Dealer says I have to do required maintenance which is new plugs and a fuel injection cleaning. My import mechanic is going to do all this for about 1/5 of the cost. Dealer says if it happens again then they are on the hook to find out what the problem is if the maintenance has been done.
Anyone else have this type of issue?

Is that Hyundai platinum warranty or 3rd party? In either case - I don't think the dealer's claim about the "last mechanic that touched it" being on the hook is accurate. Read the details for the warranty - chances are it reads "any certified" for regular maintenance, and even for the warranty work. Is this the 5.0 or the 3.3?

This is the ultimate 5.0.

The service guy at the dealer told me that I could have my shop do the maintenance. It's a third party warranty but called Platinum 150,000 or 10 years. The dealer sold it to me when I bought this car. Not quite a year ago with only around 40,000 MI.

Started to run very rough. Definite oder, coolant or exhaust in the cabin. Gave O2 codes of rich fuel and "slow" something. Dealer replaced O2 sensors. 2 weeks later, same thing. Blue "see through" smoke from the tail pipe on acceleration. Dealer is requiring routine maintenance of plug change and fuel inj. service. I have an import mechanic doing both those Friday for a 5th of the price of the dealer.
Is this possibly the 'O' ring issue with the coolant? Whatever it is I'm assuming the warranty will cover it.

Blue smoke means oil burn. Rough running either means bad spark, low fuel flow or contamination in the cylinder. Coolant smells syrupy & sweet - much different from oil. Do you have white smoke as well as blue? If so - head gasket. If not - possibly O-ring, but doesn't explain coolant smell if it is there.

Check the details of your warranty - I am sure it says "any certified shop" or somesuch and not "the dealer who sold it to you". If nothing else - call the warranty company for those details as for who can do the work. In either case - it needs proper diagnosing - and regular maintenance isn't going to up and change what's going on right now.

The exhaust definitely has a sweet smell to it. The exhaust is very transparent, not thick white. It definitely has a blue hue to it. I'm doing the maintenance one because it needs it and two the dealer is always going to point at that before they do anything.
All the symptoms sound like the o-ring issue.

New plugs, 4 previous codes. 2 for "misfires" 1 slow error from the O2 sensor. Pic attached. Coolant was very low. Two plugs showed a very small bit of oil. Assuming the codes were from those two. I hope all is well now. Next is the wrinkles on the dash.

While 2 plugs had oil - were any rather clean - even lacking carbon? If so - combined with low coolant and sweet smell from exhaust = head gasket. I would take it to a shop and have them look in the tops of the cylinders (if any piston tops are clean then it also indicates head gasket), and/or a cylinder pressure test.

That is next if i have any issue. I'll also have the dealer check when it's in for the dash wrinkles. I suspect low coolant is from the common 'O' ring issue. With warranty and it being a TSB I'm not that worried. I'm hoping they will just do it when it's in for the wrinkles. The last time I brought it there, the service manager said he could smell the exhaust while it was sitting there and running.
