  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I don't know if the newer GV60s have these available but I spent a couple days earlier this week driving a GV70 loaner with one, and I didn't like it at all.

First, a couple plusses to try and balance things - the mirror provides a much wider field of vision out the back, dramatically reducing blind spots, and; would allow a driver to see behind them even with the hatch stuffed full of cargo.

What I didn't like:
  • I didn't like the angle/framing of the image. When stopped at a light, it looked like there was no space between the two vehicles. There was some minimal height adjustment available, but nothing fixed this.
  • When driving in the dark, there was a lot of bloom coming from the headlights of the vehicles behind.
  • There was something Uncanny Valley-like about the image on the screen - possibly caused by a low refresh rate. I can't say exactly what it was, but I found it very unnatural and offputting to look at.
I can imagine that digital side mirrors could be even worse, given unusual screen location and the inability to adjust viewing angle by simply moving one's head. This will not be an option box I'm inclined to tick any time soon.

Was there an option to switch to the regular optical mirror? Or was it digital only?

We have a digital mirror in our Kia and love it. With a traditional mirror, our eyes have to focus on infinity. With a digital mirror, our eyes have to focus on an object just a few feet from our eyes. Takes a few seconds to adapt but we love it because of the previously mentioned benefits.

I tried but didn't find a way to switch it, finding only brightness and position adjustments. As it was just a loaner I didn't got much further than messing with the switches directly on the mirror.

I struggle to focus on near objects, so the 'infinity' of a traditional mirror may be preferable - though I don't recall having issues focusing on the screen.
Maybe what I thought was poor screen resolution was just my eyes? :ROFLMAO:

That all sounds great unless you wear progressive lenses! With progressives (or bifocals), the upper portion of your eyeglasses is set to focus on distant objects - great for real mirrors! But to view near objects, you have to tilt your head up... WAY UP in the case of a rearview TV screen mounted at the top of your line of vision!

Funny you should say that. I wear progressive lens.

I wear progressives also, no problem. When I first got my car I have to say it was a bit disorienting. After about 2 days I started to feel more at home with it. After a week I don’t even notice and it feels normal. Give it a chance for a week or two, you will adapt and relish the advantages, especially the wider view. I much prefer it over the traditional mirror and that’s with progressives.

Btw, I believe the refresh rate is 60fps. What makes you say that is low?

And another advantage is you don't have to adjust the mirror if you switch drivers.
