Push-button Starting System

New to this forum. Just joined today but have been viewing everyday since getting my new Gensis 3 weeks ago. Mine does the buzzing also. I believe it is the automatic locking and unlocking of the steering wheel. Not sure where I read it in the manual (thanks for the info on the .pdf files they are great) but there is a process you can go through if the system does not automatically unlock the steering wheel. Don't know why it has to make noise though.

I hear it disengage when the Start button is pressed (Acc or Start Mode) and reengage when the door opens. This is part of the Anti Theft device.

Could someone record this on a video. or at least something with decent audio? I'm curious... as I've never noticed this before.

Hmmm... That's the first plausible explanation for this that I have heard. What's curious though, is that some folks seem to have this noise, and some don't.

I get the noise every single time I start the engine and stop it (or open the door). I've just gotten used to it now. Thanks for the suggestion.

That's a more plausible suggestion than even my local dealer could give. My Gen still does it, and sometimes it seems like it's getting louder, although that could be because I'm more attuned to it. It's really annoying. If the steering wheel is in a slightly askew position upon start-up, it pops, then the buzzing, and then the car starts and I drive away.

Very frustrating....

Yes, mine has been to the dealer twice to 'check out' the problem. The service manager told me both times that there were no TSBs on the problem, so therefore he couldn't do anything. He acknowledged the noise, but re-stated his conclusion. I know that the second trip to the dealer (at least for this problem) was a waste of time. I'm sure he did nothing. I know the first time they took it to their company-owned BMW dealership to do some checking/testing and said they found nothing wrong. I had it back at the dealer the 2nd time to address vibration issues relating to balancing of the tires. They found earlier that all four were out of balance, and one had slipped belts in it. They replaced the tire, but damaged the hyper-silver alloy rim in the process. The third trip to the dealer replaced the rim with a new one. At the time, this dealer didn't have any other Gens on the lot, so there was no comparison that could be made. Based on history, unless I develop some kind of problem (steering wheel lock, won't start, or whatever), I don't expect they'll be too excited to do anything. I should note that I'm not having any troubles at all with the operation of the car. Everything is working great--just a very annoying noise each time I start the car, and shut it down.

Matt you are correct as to the sound and if some have not reported this than they are not listing well. I checked several on the lot and they all do this so I am going to say that this is normal for this car. I only have 300 miles on mine and it had 13 on it when I took delivery and would not have given it a thought until I read about in this forum. Until the dealer informs me of a problem I will continue to enjoy mine. And not to worry as I did get the 10 year 100,000 bumper to bumper warranty so if it has a problem they will have to fix it.

The buzzing I'm experiencing is concurrent with the info available on this thread. It's not related in anyway to a 'warm-up' period of the car, such as you describe. It's been going on since day one, and continues as we speak, and most likely will until the noise gets addressed by HMA, if ever.

Someone earlier in this posting supplied an excellent document which describes the technical operation of the start button. After reading it my feeling is that that the noise is associated with the "ESCL" (electronic steering column lock). Power is supplied to this device during the start and stop operation. It may be that this device may not be aligned correctly with the mechanical lock interface. That could cause the motor to draw more amps which in turn would cause a buzzing sound. Just my 2 cents!

I'd agree w/your assumptions. I have a small (very small) bit of electrical knowledge and wondered about something like that. I also wondered if it was a solenoid energizing/de-energizing upon startup/shut-down. I asked the svc. mgr. about something like that, but didn't get much of a response. To me, that either means he didn't know, or didn't want to get into it (or maybe both). Again, it causes no problems (other than the annoying noise and occasional "pop" depending on where the steering wheel is positioned). Everything runs, starts, stops, operates, etc. just fine. He said they would have to wait until a TSB comes in from HMA.

I just had something happen that never happened before. I tried to unlock the car by pushing the button on the door and it would not unlock. No beep either. I pushed the unlock button on the key and it unlocked. When I tried to start the car it would not start. There was a message and a visual in the center of the dash to insert the key in the dash. After inserting the key it started. The next time I was able to start the car with the key in my pocket.

This may have something to do with the battery in the Smart Key being weak. I think I read something about that in the Owners Manaul

Uh-uh. The only way that battery is weak is if it is defective. The battery will last 4-6 years under normal conditions, so a couple month old battery should work just fine.

Not sure if this has been asked yet or not... But can you leave the vehicle running with the doors locked and walk away, with the fob in your pocket of course?

Mine does it too... the steering wheel lock or theft system makes sense to me... interesting thing is that if I open the door before shutting the engine off, it doesnt do it.

I don't have any idea if it will do what you ask, but if it did, what would be the point?
