  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

While looking for new reviews of the Genesis 4.6L, I ran across the following comparison test from Automobile Magazine:

http://www.automobilemag.com/review..._genesis_4_6_luxury_car_comparison/index.html

Based on my experiences with Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, and now the Genesis, I have to agree with the author's assessment. The BMW buyer will probably remain loyal to the German brand (particularly because of the character of the BMW drive), but Lexus should be really concerned. Based on the test (regardless of price) it seems the Genesis was a favorite. Add in the price differential that is listed on the last page of the article, I think it's a slam dunk.

I have now had my 4.6 tech for about 2 weeks.

Look, fit and finish all excellent, liquid smooth acceleration (see note below). However, sorry guys...my overall concerns:

1. Luxury look, but certain elements are not luxurious...arm rests are hard, drivers seat is lacking firm support (with or without lumbar), heating and cooling system requires adjustments when it shouldn't, Nav system is somehat difficult to use to source street names.

2. Suspension is making me seasick. Hard reaction to bumps, but dampened so the feeling is oozy (tire pressure normal)

3. Rain sensing wipers once started, don't stop when rain stops, must be manually done with stalk.

4. Gas mileage with a very light foot in the city is 18.5 MPG

5. Transmission: accelaration has a lag at the beginning, smooth thereafter.

Nice surprises:

1. Nav screen black background with white letters at night, reverse in daylight

2. Sound system so superior I hear things I don't hear in my home stereo.

3. Passengers love back seats

4. In spite of "orange peel" remarks, my black paint job is outstanding.

Just keep in mind that this is Hyundai's first shot. Toyota had far more experience with their first shot (the 1990 Lexus LS). I expect the mid-cycle refresh or, worst-case scenario, the second generation Genesis - to fix all and any concerns that make the vehicle less that perfect. In other words, I think once they spend a little more time on the Genesis, it'll be a viable competitor to the Lexus LS.

I think there must be something wrong with your wipers. Mine stop when the rain stops.

It sounds like you are unhappy with 18.5 mpg in the city. I have the 3.8 and I get 16.5 in the city. That is the best I have gotten with any car in the last ten years. I have never gotten better than 12 mpg in the city with any car from a 12 cylinder BMW to an eight cylinder BMW to a six cylinder Chrysler. I spend more time stopped at traffic lights than I do moving (literally).

I was driving a friend around town yesterday as we were sitting at one of many traffic lights he said "Now I see why you get such poor gas mileage."

I hear many complaints about the suspension. I have no complaints. Also, I hear many complaints about acceleration. Mine is fast and smooth.

Every time I get in my car I marvel at how nice it is and how well it performs.

Perhaps I am so pleased because my first car was a 1957 Chrysler New Yorker. It is hard to find anything wrong with a Genesis when comparing to a car made 51 years ago.

Yep, that makes me an old fart who is constantly amazed by todays technology.

Well, make sure that you have the automatic wipers set to the right sensitivity. It is changed by the knob which is usually used to change the intermittent speed, if you notice it says "< Auto". When you turn it up they are more sensitive, and down less sensitive.

You guys have to know that gas mileage improves after 10,000 and 20,000 miles. If you look at long-term test drives in various car magazines, their mileage gets better after that time.

Don't worry, I'm in my 20's and I'm still stuck from the technology of the early 1990's. DVD? What's that?

All:

Thanks for the comments on my post. First off, I obviously do believe that Hyundai will make the changes to improve the car, I just hope that some are able to be done while I have mine.

For a first venture, quite an amazing feat.

However, the only concern that can effect my long term enjoyment of the car is the suspension. I hope there is a fix by Hyundai, or through an after market supplier.

Re other comments:

I had to put my wipers off the auto mode to stop them.

Edumds posts 17 MPG and 25 MPG, I guess I'm doing better!

Out of your list of negatives, I'd say the suspension and the transmission lag would be things that would concern me as far as a purchase decision.

For suspension, if it's just "different" then it's probably something I could adjust to. However, if it's truly bouncy and sickening then that might be a major problem.
Also, I thought the suspension in the V8 was tuned differently than the V6. Not sure about that, maybe I'm just thinking about the difference in transmission. At any rate, I wouldn't want it too hard but I also don't want it floaty/bouncy either.

As far as the transmission, I'm a bit dissappointed to hear that there may be a lag. I know already that the power of the V8 is more tamed in the Genesis than perhaps other v8 vehicles because it's meant to be more of a luxury car, but I hope they didn't go too far. I mean if someone is going to pony up the extra money for the V8, I think the point is to get the power when you want it, right? If I get the v8, I want to be able to launch it from a dead stop when I want and have it respond. Maybe they should've had some sort of separate sports style transmission shift programming that you can switch on when you want to drive it harder.

Guess we'll have to wait until a few more people get the V8 to get a consensus on any differences/similarities to the V6 (good or bad).

That's good to know. I should see some improvement in about four years and then again in about eight years.

That's what they kept telling me with the Chrysler. I gave it back at the end of a 39 month lease with 7,860 miles.

I just got my Genesis 3.8 PP in Titanium Metillac two weeks ago. So far very pleased with the car, nothing to complain about yet. Mileage has been great, around town I have been getting 21.4 @ average speed of 32mph for the first 310 miles. I expect to get about 30 once I have a chance to hit the open road.

I have the V6 with Tech package and my around town mpg is very similar 21.5mpg. Cruising at 70MPH I get between 28 and 30MPG depending on incline of road.

Very please with the gas mileage for the power of the engine.

Ditto on the gas mileage I am getting. This is an average after ~1000 miles of driving. Great car!
