  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Looking at the 2010 year end data I would question why they import and sell the Azera. Lowest volume model in the line Only 3051 in 2010 sold which is a sales drop of 20% over the 2009 numbers.

Too bad - I had an Azera for 4 years and was very pleased with it. It's no Genesis, but I think it's a very good car.

Sales could be off due to potential buyers knowing a restyled version is coming?
Having seen the pics (as we all have) of the 2012, I'd ask why make a 6 cylinder Genesis? Seems the Azera would fit nicely between the Sonata Limited and the 8 cylinder Gen, with Equus being the top of the line.
Just thinking our loud...

The Azera has never set the world on fire sales wise. I don't think Hyundai really promoted it ever. I have never seen an add for it. It is a shame because it beats the heck out of Avalon, Camry, any front drive GM mid-sized car. It has more features than the high line Accord and seems to be a well built and equipped. The 2012 model is gorgeous and if I were to buy a front drive sedan it would be at the top of my list.

I can agree with all of them except the Avalon. The Avalon is tough to beat in the large sedan category.

I have a 2009 V6 tech package and my father has a 2009 Avalon Limited. I have driven his car at least 20 times and I like it but it is no Genesis!
Avalon is very good at sucking up multiple bumps (better than Genesis) but I like my seats, steering feel and overall ride better -- hate to float. Plus, my car has more power, far superior DVD sound system and I am crystal clear over bluetooth -- no one even knows they are on bluetooth.
The Avalon is awesome but it don't measure up in the areas that are important to me.

I think TCJ78 was comparing the Azera vs Avalon, not the Genesis vs Avalon.

I have never driven an Azera nor an Avalon, but I have heard great things about the Azera; my brother in law is a FORD guy and he will always be, always looked down at Hyundai and even hated it... until he rented an Azera 2008, he even called me at work just to talk about the car, he was really impressed with the features and overall quality of the car.

I think the 2012 Azera will be a winner for Hyundai in the mid-large segment, will eat the Avalon and will be a direct competition to Buick Lacrosse, they even share some cues on the side and rear fender lines.

Well... I don't want to deviate the topic. All I can say is that I did my part to contribute to Hyundai's February numbers (wife has a new Red Sonata Limited Turbo) ;)

Wow, look at those numbers for the Sonata. Double Y/Y. Even considering it was a refreshed model that is impressive. Good gains for the Elantra too. It looks like the Veracruz and Tucson are not doing that well (Tucson is doing a little better).

My bad, TCJ78 was comparing the Azera vs Avalon, not the Genesis vs Avalon... Anywho, I hope you do get to drive an Azera and can report back on it vs. the Sonata Turbo.

I agree. The Azera was the best kept secret Hyundai had for years. It was the first Hyundai I ever owned. We stumbled across it looking for a new Lincoln. I wouldn't have looked at a Hyundai before that. Now with the Genesis and Equus they may have waited too long.

it just seems to me that hyundai has too many sedans in their lineup. Something has to go. It's hard to figure out what each car's place is in the market. Being an automotive industry guy (toyota factory rep for years), It just seems to me that they have one extra sedan somewhere in there.

Not if they eventually create a seperate division for the Genesis and Equus and require an independent facility for sales and service.

Hyunda dealers would then need the Azera IMO. But as sales figures show under the current organization structure it is probably redundant.

We've talked about this elsewhere... but the Azera is closer to the Sonata than it is to the Genesis. It's a FWD midsize sedan.

Honestly, I think of the Azera as the Maxima of Hyundai (only better), the Sonata as the Altima (only better) and the Elantra as the Sentra (only there's no comparison, the Sentra is trash).

The Genesis and Equus are more like Nissan's Infiniti brand, as Mr. B has said above. They're luxury RWD vehicles. I think there's plenty of room in the Hyundai lineup for all these cars.

The Azera may have been Hyundai's best kept secret in its current form, but I think it's gonna be their ace in the hole with the new model - I can definitely see it stealing a ton of Maxima/Camry/Avalon/Accord/TL sales in 2012!!!

Well, I guess I disagree with your assertion that there is room in the lineup for all the cars. Hyundai has thrown a LOT of marketing dollars at the Genesis, and a pretty good case could be made that it's cut into the dollars spent on the other lines. Saying that a car is "best kept secret" indicates folly on the part of the manufacturer.

The beauty of toyota/Lexus Honda/Acura Nissan/Infinit is that the luxury divisions get their own marketing budget. Nobody's going to say "hey, we can't push the Altima sedan because we spent a bunch of money on the M-series"

I'm a car enthusiast, I know more about cars than my friends. If I don't know why I should look at the Azera, or Sonata, or which, or have a clue which cars those two compete with, then neither do my friends.

My prediction is that either Hyundai will have to change it's strategy, or they will start to see certain lines suffer. Suffer either due to cannibalization or just lack of buyer education.

There is a reason that Honda doesn't market the TL and RL and TSX under the Honda names. The LS 430 is branded under Lexus for a reason, even though there is no counterpart for it in Toyota's line (with the avalon being actually on the GS platform)

Since this discussion is not specifically about the Genesis, I'm moving it into the general Hyundai area. I'd appreciate it if member would only use the "Genesis" areas to discussion the Hyundai Genesis...

Thank you...
