  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My first post and wanted to say Hello and thanks for all the input been reading a lot.
I want to give you some background on myself as a driver. List of cars
First car 1981 Trans Am 6.6 (first car I bought) Sold
1981 Mercury Cougar XR7 (ran this thing to the ground... dumb teenage years) Sold
1987 Nissan Pulsar NX SE(fun little thing) Sold
1989 Buick Regal GS (alright did its job and decent pep) Sold
1994 Chevrolet K1500 ext cab (700r4 went on it) Sold
1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2(Still have this wife drives it. Vehicle has been great to us) Still own
1986 Dodge D350 with the 360 (great getting dirty truck bought it for 800 cash) Still Own
2003 Hyundai XG350 (Not 1 problem in 160,000 miles) Loved this car
Thought I needed a truck to pull the boat and haul some people around so I traded the Hyundai in for ...
2007 Suburban. 1 month in Certified no less and already have had issues...they are under warranty but I am just not feeling the quality in this thing compared to the Hyundai I had. (buyers remorse setting in)
My situation changed and I don't need the suburban as I got the old 1 ton running good to where I can make weekend trips with it if need be.

So I am wanting a Hyundai again. I am torn between the Sonata Turbo and the Hyundai Genesis. I am torn for different reasons so I know they are totally different animals. What I am wanting to know is (I read the if you could change one thing thread) is the 4.6 that much more fun to drive than the 3.8.
Also, does anyone own both a Sonata and Genesis or does anyone own or have driven for a decent amount the 3.8 and 4.6.
Would be in the market for a used Genesis 4.6/3.8 or a new Sonata Turbo.
Thanks in advance.

We have over 25,000 miles on our 2011 4.6 (yes we drive a lot) and don't even think about a having different car. With 385 hp the Genesis is so much fun compared to other sedans. Its 0-60 time is 5.3 seconds but what we really like is the 40 to 75 mph time. Going with the V8 you only give up 1 or 2 mpg.

Northern- LOL! I just replaced a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the Genesis. It was pretty much nearing the end of its useful life, really. Served us well but was expensive to keep having to repair. Needless to say, I'm going from the outhouse to the penthouse, proverbially speaking, with the Genny.

I have a Genesis 4.6 and my son has a 2011 Sonata Limited 2.0T. I feel both cars are at the top of their respective classes but are in no way comparable. Two entirely different designs for two entirely different markets. As far as choosing the 4.6 over the 3.8 or vice-versa, for the small upcharge and fuel mileage penalty, the 4.6 is a far better road car in my opinion. If you consider the upcharge Mercedes, BMW, Infiniti and Lexus charge for their V8 versions over the 6 cyl equivalent, the Genesis 4.6 is a steal.

I love my 07 Tahoe, 42k miles and I haven't had a single issue with it.

As far as the Sonata vs Genesis goes, both are good cars for the price, so it really depends what you are looking for feature-wise, and how much you want to spend. Definitely drive both if you haven't already.

I leased an '09 3.8 for over two years, and recently upgraded to a 4.6. So I have driven both.

I don't know where and how you drive, but in my experience there is not much difference between the two in 99% of driving situations. Yes, the 4.6 was timed at 5.3 0 to 60, but the 290 hp 3.8 was timed at 6.3. Not exactly a slouch. I also found handling and ride to be similar. So, unless you like to "play" you'll be very happy with the 3.8. I was.

Because of the engine and transmission upgrades to the 2012's, there are some great deals on 2011's. Maybe you should consider a new one. If you decide on the 3.8, get one with the tech package. It has lots of great features well worth the extra money.

Good luck.

Ironic?

Traded in the Denali for the second Genisis in the family.

Had 4x4 withdrawals since.... wound up buying a 2003 Chevy Blazer with 66,000 miles yesterday to soothe the blues.

Yes this is the only thing I am worrying about but the wife doesn't work so on really bad days I can drive the Jeep. Driving the Suburban daily and looking around at an empty 8 person vehicle is depressing for a daily driver. Not to mention a waste. So I won't miss that at all.

I go tomorrow to look at the vehicle, and possibly pick it up if it is good.
Does 24k sound good for a low mileage Certified 09 4.6 with Tech.

I'm not sure about the price, but if I were looking to buy a 09 Genesis, I would check the build date of the car and make sure it was built after April 2009. There was a mid-year change that improved the suspension. The build date can be found on the driver’s front door jamb.

the 4.6 is worth the 1mpg loss due to the extras you get and silky smooth trans. as for upgraded trans' in the '12? not more the $2k or more they will be getting over '11's as they are sure to keep their price more likely to $1000 under invoice and you can get a 4.6 for $36.5k right now. i had the 3.8 and was practically forced into the 4.6 by the dealer due to an issue with the 1 day old 3.8. it couldn't have worked out better..for me lol

So what is expectation of the discounted price for '12 4.6?

i don't think you will see much movement other than $1000 under invoice, probably a $1000 owner loyalty (maybe after a few months). you'll have to wait MORE than 1 year before you see 12's discounted like these, maybe longer if they sell well and economy keeps getting better. Hyundai is selling so many sonata's thye don't have to discount any of their other vehicles and they would still make money hand over fist lol

You need a shrink. You are too confused.

I own a 2010 4.6 and would Never consider a Sonata or Kia Optima. They just are not in the same class. I also do not buy a car based on gas mileage. To me, it all about if my blood starts pumping when I get in the car. I have an SL500 yet love driving my wife's Genesis. It's a Lexus or BMW for a lot less money.
