  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2012 spotted on the lots!

This is interesting. I wonder if this is accurate:

The seat of the pants indicates it [2012 R-Spec] accelerates as advertised, and does so smoothly, with seamless upshifts and downshifts from the Hyundai-designed, ZF-built eight-speed.

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/sedans/1106_2012_hyundai_genesis_r_spec_drive/index.html

From Car and Driver today:

Regardless of engine, every 2012 Genesis will have an eight-speed automatic. As opposed to many other automakers, which use transmissions from outside suppliers, Hyundai chose to design its own slushbox. Maybe it shouldn’t have. Eight speeds allow for a fine balance of economy and zest, but the transmission is slow. Both up- and downshifts drag, and we were able to count off full seconds before getting what we wanted after stomping through the kickdown switch. All cars have a gate for manual actuation, but when the transmission takes longer to respond than an estranged fourth wife, it’s hard to care.

From Car and Driver today:

i belong to a number of forums but i must say MANY members here are thicker than amor plated steel... thank you for the cut and post quote putting to bed this ridiculous argument. Ask yourselves this question....IF THE TRANS WAS FROM ZF IN ANY WAY HYUNDAI WOULD'VE BRAGGED ABOUT IT FOR ADDED CREDIBILITY RIGHT??????? THEY DIDN'T BECAUSE IT ISN'T.

Did Motor Trend and Car&Driver test the same car? Seems they don't have the same impression of the eight speed transmission.

I've read all reviews available to date and only C&D complained about the tranny being slow. I mean...they guesstimate 0-60 in 4.8, I don't think a slow shifting tranny would get you there.

also, do you really need a massively quick downshift when you're generally in the 300+hp range all the time anyway? this car should allow passing in any gear with plenty of force.

first, YES.. try living in the most densely populated state in the country.

you're missing the point. it's not a full on drag race sprint where the computer has plenty of time to make adjustments as the rpm's rise. they're referencing the slow reaction to downshifts mostly.

this has been an issue ever since they started with the 6+ speed auto transmissions. picture you're crusing along in 6th at 55 and need to pass someone the trans has to drop 3 gears, quickly. all 6 speeds struggled with this with the german engineered trans' getting the leg up because they started developing them first. the same will happen with the 8 speeds. i am sure GM, Ford, Dodge will all have to sort through their own issues as well. this is not surprising, the first years of any complicated design will have detracters as well as those swearing it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Just remember if "we" are going to agree that "there's a suspension issue" with all genesis up to this point because all the auto media claims there's one (as some members do as well) how can you dismiss a "trans downshifting issue" coming from the same source. hopefully some members will report back coming from the 6 speed and we'll have more opinions on the issue of 6spd vs 8spd.

and as for 4.8 to 60?? i highly doubt it.. extremely doubt it. i am thinking 5.0 to 60 and 13.7 @105mph in the 1/4.. the trans programs in hyundai's automatic is going to water down the performance tremendously.. it shifts so slow, add another shift in there at .02+

I currently drive a 5 speed Acura RL (09), I put the foot down and the tranny stops 1 gear short of where I need it to be. I think the programming sux, the hardware is all there.

see what you're saying. i came from to GM vehicles with 6 speed transmissions and driven quite a bit more and outside of the C6 & Camaro SS the transmissions in the other cars, the G8, The Yukon Denali with the 6.2 the Tahoe 5.3, were all junk until "tweaked" by a tuner.. the biggest problem was the torque management programmed into it.. hyundai LOVES torque management lol...

when you hear us ZF 6 speed guys talking about messing with perfection, trust us, that trans, those 6 gears are perfection... remember coke and coke classic.. notice the "classic" is the only one left standing lol

Got a 2010 TL, looking to get a 2012 4.6 someday. The trick with the TL is don't floor it. Depress pedal 1/2 way and zoom. Flooring it is underwhelming. I have a question...here in LA I seldom get out of 3rd. What real world advantages, in the city, are there to a 6 or an 8 unless I do extensive freeway driving?

I don't know how you can get full power with 50% throttle application, but the way I do it with the RL is fully let go of gas and than smack it, that results in instant 5 to 2 downshifts, so I know the stupid tranny can do it!

otherwise, I just paddleshift to correct gear, as 09 allows for manual changes in D mode or full control up and down in S mode where it doesn't up shift for you.

The 5 to 2...I call it "surprising the auto tranny trick". If you slowly push it to the floor, you may get 5 to 3...but I thought it'd be obvious to give full power when the pedal is at 100%...go figure.

I may be wrong in understanding your need. Yes, pedal to metal will give an abrupt thrust but a dissappointing one. I just found that that 1/2 way mark givews thrust and then a fast mounting to speed with the V-tech taking over. Could be wrong. Carry on.

tonygxp, I know all about driving in well populated places, like Manhattan. I actually keep my car in 2nd gear the whole time as I never know when a cab will try to detail me. If not a cab than it's a livery or a bus...a bycicle or pedestrian...or combination of any of the above while dodging potholes, traffic lights and of course cops. Did I mention all the other people driving?

yea...I've been in populated areas :)

Rank State Population density (2010)
District of Columbia[2] 9,857 inhabitants per square mile (3,806 /km2)
1 New Jersey 1,196 inhabitants per square mile (462 /km2)
2 Rhode Island 1,018 inhabitants per square mile (393 /km2)
3 Massachusetts 839.4 inhabitants per square mile (324.1 /km2)
4 Connecticut 738.1 inhabitants per square mile (285.0 /km2)
5 Maryland 594.8 inhabitants per square mile (229.7 /km2)
6 Delaware 460.8 inhabitants per square mile (177.9 /km2)
7 New York 411.2 inhabitants per square mile (158.8 /km2)

This is by states...I think NYC is very well populated :)

and look at what else Wiki says...

The New York metropolitan area, also known as Metropolitan New York, Greater New York, or the Tri-State area, is the most populous metropolitan area in the United States and is also one of the most populous in the world.

Saw several at Brad Benson Hyundai in NJ recently

Test drove a loaded v6

im coming from a 5 speed auto 2008 infiniti g35xs just so you can understand where im coming from with my opinions

the car itself as everyone knows is a pretty nice lookin car in person and a comfortable one to sit in.

The 2012 i drove didnt seem to have any suspension issues.

For me personally I wish the suspension and steering was a little tighter like my G35's is

other than that I came away very impressed with the car

I believe I visited Brad Benson dealership this Sunday, is that the one where they try to charge $10,000 for pin stripping and plastic crap on wheels and doors as part of their extra special customer rip off package?

10,000 dollar rip off package to make the car look worse ...

other dealers in the area seem to charge 2k for other junk also tho like nitrogen tires and more pinstriping

that same day one of the locals told me it was like the best place to buy. I guess 8k off the 10k they already tacked on seems like a great deal to them.

gj walking away :)

P.S. for everyone else, that's 10k on top of MSRP for every car they own, I've seen the same package on a cheaper car for $4,000, it's a sticker right next to MSRP sticker since they can't legally mess with that.

Know any dealers that dont pinstripe their cars, nitrogen tire em, or anything else like that which adds to msrp for no reason ...

I got till nov till my lease is up then I should be in the market for a car. Hopefully I can find a decent dealer to get what I want at a decent price.

Only one dealer in my area pinstripes the cars (all of them, not just Genesis) as soon as they get them.

I just spoke to a dealer in NJ and I was told R-Spec's aren't coming in till November/December. bummer.

Just purchased one of the 2012 3.8 genesis this past friday as they were rolling off of the truck. I was actually lookings at the 2011's but they made me a deal I could not pass up.
