classical music on the Lexicon

I have not listened to classical music in a car for several years, mainly because of the poor sound quality in all my previous cars. Yesterday, I found a classical station on XM which was playing a cello concerto by Vivaldi. I turned up the volume and was totally immersed in the clear, detailed sound from the Lexicon system. It was a deeply moving experience. I was cruising on the freeway at 80 MPH in a quiet, comfortable car, and hearing the clean sounds of the cellos and violins.

It truly was almost as good as being at a live performance. Needless to say, I assigned that station into my preset stations.

Has anyone else discovered that they enjoy listening to a genre they normally don't listen to?

Pretty much anything I listen to in the Genesis sounds better than it did in any other car I've owned. But I'm surprised to read that you found XM so good - of all the sound sources, I've found it to be the worst for separation, frequency range, dynamic range, and so on. Maybe I'm not listening to the best channels.

On the other hand, anything on DVD-A is spectacular. I haven't bought any classical recordings on DVD, but I might give it a try.

My question to you - can you play DVD-A while driving? Wasn't sure if it treated these discs like DVD video discs. I have several Porcupine Tree DVD-A discs and would find it pretty fantastic to be able to play these while driving!

Yes, they will play (but no image).

And Porcupine Tree has some of the best sounding tunes around! Good choice.

Thanks! Porcupine Tree is one of THE best bands no one has heard of. Been a fan since about 2004 and have the whole catalog now. His solo work as well as Blackfield and No Man are wonderful as well.

So, this begs the question. I usually NEVER insert original media into a car player as I've had some minor wear issues from the changer mechanisms in the past. Will the unit play a DVD-A copied disc on DVD+R/-R media?

on the 14 speaker Lexicon, I find my volume on classical music hitting up in the 28-32 level, as lower level passages are hard to hear from the tire noise on the '12 Michelins. This is at urban freeway driving, haven't tried it on road trips.

I keep wanting another 10 points on the volume scale or such. Maybe my ears just don't work as well as they used to....too many concerts when I was younger !

i think the lexicon gets loud enough.
more important than the absolute volume is the detail that i hear in the music that i normally don't get with lesser audio systems.

Seattle you have the r-spec? Dude where's the write up? I think I know exactly how you felt about the previous vehicle so I would love to hear what you think about the r-spec. Did I miss it?

I wish Amazon had a reliable way to show just DVD-A disks for sale. Every time I try searching for that attribute the list includes CDs and DVDs.

You can get the Beatles"Love" CD/DVD-A combo in the big box stores, and often Roy Orbison "Black and White Nights". Otherwise, yeah.
Rhino, Burning Shed, Monster offer a couple new disks per year but otherwise it is old technology. Don't forget though that DVD music disks play too. Just no video.

I tried that, but selecting DVD Audio on the left omitted many discs that Amazon sells. I guess the format isn't important enough for them to care much.

I have noted that not all XM channels are created equal - there are some, like Pops for instance, that have great sound on a very consistent basis. Others...not so much. I find this very puzzling and have no idea why some channels would sound better than others but this has been my experience with XM.

yes, it was Pops that i was listening to!!
i think classical music is more demanding to reproduce, and hence less compression is put on the music, i'm guessing.
at the opposite extreme, talk radio/news is heavily compressed.
