  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I am wanting to get into the Genesis fold. However I am presented with a few options and am not sure which to get. Can any of you help? I am looking at a 2010 4.6 w/premium pkg with approx 22K miles (silver w/cashmere). Other option I am considering is a 2012 3.8 base model (no pakages). Would appreciate any opinions given. Thanks and glad to be a part of the site.

What is build date of the 2010?

If it has tech/premium package it would be same as a 2011 4.6. You would also have the 385 hp motor.

If the price of these is anywhere near the same, I would go with the base 2012 V6. Beware of audio system problems on Tech Packages when the electronics warranty runs out after 36 months / 36K miles (audio system has a different warranty than everything else). Minimum cost to repair Tech Package audio outside of warranty is $3,000 since they have to replace entire head unit, and many people have had problems with the Tech Package audio systems.

Also consider that the 10 year / 100K mile powertrain warranty is only for original owner, so you would only get this on a the 2012 model (or a new 2011 model if you can find one). So how long you plan to keep the car may be a big factor in your decision.

Thanks for the advice. I am the type of guy who keeps a car for quite a long time. My current car is 12 yrs old and has very few miles (85K)considering the model year. So, with that in mind, a new '12 would probably be the way to go. Thanks again.

I am still up in the air a bit on this. If any of you have any other bits of advice/info on this, please feel free to chime in. I know purchasing a Genesis will be a good buy, but which is the better move I could make between the two options I have listed? I have not completely ruled out either one. Maybe some more info could sway me more towards the better buy. The used 4.6 is not certified. Should I have any concerns with that?

Yes. The 10 year warranty is not transferable as far as I know. It becomes a 6 year warranty to the new owner I think.

Make decisions today based on how they'll affect not only the present but the future too. A little more expenditure today may save expenditure in 3 years.

Basically the powertrain warranty doesn't transfer, but the BTB does, which is a 5 year, 60,000 mile plan.

Except of course, Hyundai apparently doesn't think the audio/video system is in-between the bumpers, so it only has a 3 year / 36K mile warranty.

If I planned on keeping a car 10 years or more, I would definitely be concerned about the warranty.

One other thing that not sure if you are aware of is that Hyundai improved the suspension system and ride in 2012, so if you get a 2010 model then make sure you test drive on some rough roads to make sure it OK with you compared to 2012.

I don't know if the sound system is important to you, but if it is, you might want to compare the two. Even the 14 speaker (non-Tech) Lexicon is phenomenal. Also, this midlevel system seems not as prone to problems as the Tech system is.

i think the most important factor is which car (3.8 v 4.6) gives you more driving pleasure, as to me they feel quite different.

I have yet to test drive them one right after the other. I am pretty new to this game, but I will obviously drive them both before I make a decision. I have read on the forum about the suspension concerns from earlier model years. The warranty and ride have me leaning towards the new '12, but I know that there are plenty of '09-11 Genesis owners who love their car.

As far as sound systems go, that is kinda low on the prority list. Don't get me wrong, I don't want a crummy system either. But I'm not as picky in that category as some may be.

Thanks again for all of the input. I have much to think about.

I have a 2010 4.6 with the Tech package and I would not get any Genesis without the 17 speaker Lexicon sound system. Night and day over the standard sound system.

OP is looking at the Base Model. Tech Package is an extra $9,800 over Base ($4000 over Premium Package).

The Base Model audio system is not crummy, but is just regular stereo with front and rear speakers, and not the surround sound on the higher end Packages of the Genesis (such as one would find on a high-end home theatre system). Some of the speakers on the Base Model 7-Speaker system are identical the speakers on the Tech Package (I checked the part numbers and specs in the Hyundai part catalog). Other speakers are very similar, just a little different (but obviously not as many as the 14-Speaker Premium Package or 17-speaker Tech Package).

I know something about audio systems, as the stereo speakers I have at home cost $3500 a pair (just two speakers).

However... if you find a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) on a Hyundai dealer's lot...
you will have the remaining balance of the original factory warranty (5 year/60,000 bumper/bumper and 10 year/100,000 drivetrain)

New to the forum...thanks to all for your time. What did Wannagenny decide?

I have similar issue/decision. 2010 4.6 Premium for around $29 or 2011 'demo' 4.6 (full warranty) technology for about $37?

1 year older, 19k miles, $8000, less warranty,,,,prefer color on the 2010....any thoughts? It seems like 'be happy with both, but warranty may be worth it'.
