If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I've been a happy owner of a Genesis R-Spec 5.0 for a few weeks now. I've enjoyed the hell out it, but along the way, I found some things that could be done better or differently. As such, I've put together a list of changes I'd like to see. While I've driven all three versions of the sedan, my experience is primarily with the R-Spec since that's the one I bought. I know some of these won't apply to all models or even all years of the same model. Some are specific to the R-Spec, as well. But since I took the time to write them down, I figured I'd share them.

I know some of these technically violate the "stop starting stereo/nav discussions" sticky, but since those items are grouped with several others, I didn't see any place to put them all in the same post. I hope a moderator (or two) forgives me.

Some of these are things probably easily fixed, and I think most of these could probably be done with a minor tweak.

NAV - Add direction/distance indication when selecting point of interest by name: When selecting a point of interest by category, the individual POIs have an arrow that points to the relative direction of that POI, along with a straight-line distance. If you are selecting a POI by name rather than category, you don't get the direction or distance indication.

A/V - Persistent surround sound setting: I've seen this several times on the forums, and I understand a fix is forthcoming. I'd be remiss, however, if I left it off this list. For the uninitiated, If you turn off the car and turn it back on fairly quickly, the enabled surround sound setting is persistent for all modes (XM, FM, etc.) If you leave it off, say, overnight, the surround sound only remains selected for for the mode used just prior to turning the car off.

A/V - Add a setting for maximum startup volume: This one is pretty simple. Currently, when the car starts (or the AV system is turned on), the volume is the same as the last time the system was turned on. If the volume was set to 30 when the system is turned off, it's at 30 when its turned on. I'd like to see either a hard-set maximum volume at startup, or the ability to set a maximum volume (0-15, for example). If the volume is below this max setting at shutdown, that's where it is at startup. If it's higher, the volume is adjusted down to the preset maximum

Display - RDS info for FM/XM on the center display: When the AV input information is selected on the center display (the one between the tach and speedo), it would be nice to have the RDS info scrolling on it.

A/V - Bluetooth streaming: I've come to understand that the Lexicon systems with the touchscreen nav have bluetooth streaming available, but the system with the non-touchcreen nav doesn't. In fact, the owner's manual for the R-Spec doesn't mention streaming via Bluetooth or the A2DP/AVCD bluetooth profiles.

Display - The ability to turn off the center display: This could probably be added fairly easily, maybe with a long-press of the steering wheel button. This is a nice-to-have, really, but something I have always enjoyed on cars I've owned previously. It's especially helpful on long drives at night.

Display/Smart Cruise - An indication of speed matching: The smart cruise is great at showing when a car is detected ahead of you and showing when the brakes are applied. What it doesn't do, however, is give an indication that you and the car in front of you are moving at the same speed or whether or not that speed is below the cruise setting. There are a couple of ways to indicate this. One way to do this would be to simply put an indication of the actual speed relative to the set cruise speed just below the cruise set speed. Another would be to tie the color of the distance-indicators to the relative speed of the car in front of you. For example:
Blue bar(s) - You are cruising at the set speed and the car in front is out of range (beyond the set distance)
Green bar(s) - You are cruising at the set speed and the car in front of you is being speed-matched.
Yellow bar(s) - You are cruising below the set speed and the car in front of you is being speed-matched.

Lights/safety - Provide an option to tie automatic headlights to the automatic wipers (or enable the tie-in full time): The automatic headlights are excellent, as with most cars that have this feature; however, I'd like to be able to leave them in automatic mode, regardless of the weather. Some states, like North Carolina, mandate that if you are using your wipers, you must use headlights. I haven't researched to see if DRLs count for this, so it may be a moot point. The DRLs don't have a tie-in to the tail lights, though, If there is enough water for my wipers to be running, I'd like to have the tail lights on, too, lest I get rear-ended by someone that didn't see me.

Safety/LDWS - Allow for changing the lane departure warning volume: At highway speed, with the radio on (and not really loud), and/or with the moonroof open, the lane departure warning is a little difficult to hear. It would be great if we could change the volume and/or the frequency of the warning. The volume choice is self-explanatory; the frequency change would enable a higher frequency tone that is not garbled or muted by road noise, radio, etc.

Convenience - Ability to permanently enable auto hold feature: A long press to enable the auto hold between engine starts would be nice.

Convenience - Brightness control does not change green indicators: When adjusting the brightness of dash/interior lights up or down, the green indicators (cruise, LDWS, etc.) remain constant. In nighttime driving, they are pretty bright, and being able to dim them with the rest of the interior lights seems like a silly oversight.

Lights/convenience - Link night mode color to headlights: The option to have the dash/nav screen's day/night mode linked to the headlights would be fairly convenient.

Convenience - Mirror adjustment in reverse with switch in middle position: The outside mirror adjustment switch must be in the left or right position for the downward-adjustment when you have shifted to reverse. This is counter-intuitive, since leaving the switch in the middle position is recommended for normal operation so you don't accidentally move your mirrors. (On my car, at least) if the switch is in the middle position, the mirrors don't move downward when you shift into reverse.

Lights/safety - Eliminate DRLs and make the accent light brighter to compensate: On the 2012 models, the white accent light is really nice looking, but having them right next to a dim yellow DRL looks silly. I propose that the DRL be eliminated and the accent light be used for this function, a la Audi, etc.

UPDATE: Forgot one:

Convenience - Ambient light: Just a single led dimly shining on the interior, perhaps in blue, to help find buttons and whatnot at night.

Well, those are my recommendations. What do you think?

I think you did an OUTSTANDING job! Clear and Concise as well. I would only add for the NAV unit to allow input of the city prior to street with the tech pkg. (Knob in center), I have. As it is set up just the opposite making navigation more difficult than need be. Example: I entered in a street to take my Uncle to the Dentist and 53 street possibilities popped up for all of ILLINOIS. However had the program allowed input of the city prior before street he would of gotten there to his appt. on time as the 53 street possibilities would of been narrowed down to approximately one or two tops.

:)

Good write up. A couple of things of note.

#1 Update the GPS before they sell the car. I just got my R Spec a week ago and when I went to use the map/nav, I found out that it didn't cover the new section of town I was going to. But google maps had it. Go figure.

#2 You can turn the center display off. There is a menu option for that. I just don't remember where I found it when I was playing with the system.

#3 Link the center display intensity with the dash intensity. I have not found a center display intensity control. When you adjust the one on the dash, it controls everything except the center display.

I've seen the option to turn the nav display of but not the one between the speedo and the tach.

Can't you just keep pressing display until it goes blank?
Nope.

One minor addition to the list: I'd like the clock to be set automatically via XM. My old Acura did this and I was surprised at such an easy feature being omitted.

A more major addition to the list: I'd like a search function added to the iPod interface. When you have thousands of songs it's torture trying to find/play a particular one.

In general I find that whoever created the display of the XM on screen data did a bad job. It displays useless information like the channel number in dead center. More relevant data like current song title is relegated to the very bottom of the screen. Stupid. And when you select XM to display in the center display near the speedo, it displays the channel number. Dumb! It should have a scrolling display of the channel NAME and song info. Again, my old Acura did this and it was helpful.

I've been contemplating the pros and cons of this feature, too. Due to a recent speeding ticket, I'm utilizing cruise control more frequently to counteract my tendency to over-exercise the 385 ponies under the hood . But I've never had "smart" CC before, and I'm not sure I like it.

In the days of "dumb" CC, it was up to me to realize I was coming up on a slower-moving car and make a decision to either pass them or temporarily disengage CC until I could safely pass.

Now, my so-called "smart" CC automatically slows me down to match the speed of the slower vehicle in front, and the fact that my speed has decreased by 2 or 5 or more MPH is only evident via the analog speedometer (which is already biased several percent higher than actual speed...an irritating practice shared by BMW and perhaps other automakers...which I occasionally overcome by displaying my actual GPS speed via the Navi Info screen...to intentionally calibrate a gauge to make an inaccurate measurement insults my inner engineer...sorry, rant over).

So, in order for smart CC to meet my needs, I'd either like some obvious notification that the CC has slowed me down below my set point to match the speed of the car in front (per cmunic8r99's suggestions), or I'd like the option to disable "smart" functionality and dumb-down my CC to the low IQ level I'm used to.

Given my driving habits, I'd probably be better off without "smart" CC. I never engage CC in high traffic situations, and in the low traffic conditions where I am inclined to use it, I'm more than willing to monitor my proximity to other cars and make the necessary adjustments. I fear that "smart" CC is likely to promote even less engagement by drivers to their environment, a discouraging trend already, even without this feature.

Ah, perhaps because you have ECO mode where I have a blank screen? (Just looked at your manual.) If ECO mode is turned off do you get a blank screen or a screen that says ECO mode off?

Nice List, just a thought on one entry and some additional features I would like to see added:

Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) while maybe not aesthetically pleasing do serve a purpose. There are those who will argue the benefits of DRLs but some insurance agencies do offer a discount to your premium for having them. I personally don't mind them and a brighter bulb can be purchased if you choose to do so though I'm not sure how hard they are to change out.

One thing I would like to see on all vehicles are brighter headlights, providing they can find a way to not have them blind oncoming drivers. Considering most low beam headlights provide well under 300' of illumination this is one area I would like to see vastly improved upon.

(1) Cooled seat option for all passengers.
(2) Rear Headrest / Back of Seat entertainment system.
(3) Rear automatic side window sun shades like the Equus.
(4) Remote starter with window up/down feature.
(5) Hard Drive based music storage.
(6) A more complete navigational system with an auto update feature that the user can turn on/off (fee based) or a lifetime update payment option like portable GPS's offer.

My 2 cents on the subject matter :)

All good suggestions. For me, there are only a couple features I think would make the car an almost perfect 10.

Remote starter. Every other car in the class has this.
The NAV system from my Wife's Sonata. Funny the system in the lower end car is better. Touch screen, bluetooth streaming, better phone integration. Keep the lexicon audio and the HD screen but give me the features at least the Sonata has!!
Heated Steering Wheel. C'mon, it's already in Canada!

I got an email for an engineering survey from Hyundai today. Suffice it to say I peppered the comments fields with links to these recommendations.

Another one to add to the list. Unless some oen can tell me I'm dumb and how to change it.

The trip agerage speed, MPG and time seem to reset when you turn off the car for a period of time. I'd rather have it as a user input reset as I'd like to see the overall average between fillups. My other cars are user input resets, not automatic.

(5) Hard Drive based music storage.
Easy:

1. Buy this: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-Ultra-Portable-External-STAA320100/dp/B003ELOSEG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1322328528&sr=1-2"]http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-Ultra-Portable-External-STAA320100/dp/B003ELOSEG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1322328528&sr=1-2[/ame]

2. Format HDD to Fat32 using this utility: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Fat32Formatter.shtml

3. Copy up to 250GB worth of mp3's onto portable HDD.

2. Hook up via USB in center console.

4. Enjoy!

Suspension changes.

I agree with some of the reviewers (like Car & Driver) - the suspension, particularly the rear suspension, is too bouncy and it feels like the front & rear suspension systems are from two different cars. After driving around for 2 months on lousy concrete pavement, I was ready to throw in the towel.

So, I decided to bite the bullet and change the springs from the 2012 5.0L R-spec springs to the 2012 4.6L springs and that made a big improvement. There's still some bounce but it's now equal on the front and rear. Before, the rear bounced like an unloaded semi-trailer. Now, the suspension still is tight like an R-spec should be but doesn't bounce. It has good control, corners very flat, and feels under control at all times.

I think the 30% increase in shock damping over the 4.6 was a good move but the 30% increase in spring rates wasn't. With the higher spring rates, it feels like the Sachs ASD shocks, even with the 30% increase in damping, just don't provide quite enough damping for minor spring deflections. The ASD shocks are simply over powered by the stiff springs.

The ASD shocks were designed to allow a significant amount of spring deflection before they really start to provide resistance then provide increasing damping as spring deflections increase. The idea being that the relaxed damping at the lower spring deflections would provide a smoother ride without giving up control. However, if springs are too stiff, they provide little damping, even over rough roads because the hard springs won't let the suspension travel far enough for the shocks to kick in. Therefore, bounce, bounce, bounce.

I suspect the ASD shocks would perform better with even softer springs and still give a controlled ride but as best I can tell, the 2012 4.6 springs are as soft as you can get. I not find anyone at Hyundai that could give me the spring rates for any of their springs, however.

Chasing down the correct part numbers for the springs a 2012 4.6 was confusing at best. Every Hyundai parts dealer gave me a different answer. The correct part numbers are 54650 - 3M800 for the front and 55350 - 3M900 for the rear. When you look up 55350 - 3M900 in Hyundai's parts catalog, it says the part is an 'air shock" but it's not. That error just adds to the confusion.

I apologize for this lengthy post but I hope it helps some other R-spec owner who is dissatisfied with the ride.

The cost was about $750 done by the dealer. It could be done cheaper if you order the parts on line from a discount Hyundai parts dealer and use an independent shop to install the parts. Discount prices for the springs is about $65 each.
