  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello everyone,

I just got my 2012 Genesis 3.8 w/ premium back in August. Now it has 5,100 miles on it and I was thinking about trading it in for a 2012 Genesis 3.8 w/ Tech or 4.6 (since I really want the tech package). Do you think that would be a wise idea to do?

Dominic

Absolutely not. I would think that the trade in value would be about $26k at best. Remember, the dealer would have to sell this as a used car eventhough it is practically new.

The tech package is very nice but it is not worth the hit you will take trading in your car. Don't look back; for someone who is only 21 you got one great car!

no

Get yourself an aftermarket HID kit and you'll be amazed at how satisfied you'll be with the car.

Nope, nada... you'll lose 10K in trade-in... just another used car.

Look at this way; do you think it will be worth approx. $13,000 and a day of paperwork just for a $3,000 option?
You are young and found a great value in the Genesis... watch the brand continue to to shine.
In a few years, trade up that '12.

Yeah this is true, the 2014 Genesis will be here in no time but I am happy with my car (love it actually) I was just seeing if it was wise to do that, if not then I'm still happy with my premium :D

I didn't think about it losing that much value already but then again I didn't research much about how much it would be worth.
Thanks for the input guys

Agreed.... don't do it.

Get yourself some new toys for now, and trade it in for the redesigned model in a couple of years.

Ideas: HIDs, high-capacity music HDD, remote starter w/ phone interface, tint, etc

I was trying to think if it's possible to add the tech package to my current car or some of the features? For a few thousand like 4k?

Yikes, I guess I shouldn't just use the "4k" additional for Tech as if I was purchasing the car lol since labor will also play a big role.

Tech Package cannot be added to your car, in part because it requires different speaker cut-outs, electrical changes, etc. Of course, if you want to strip everything down and make all necessary replacements, I would estimate about $15K in parts and labor.

Yeah, just wait a couple of years for the all-new Genesis; meanwhile you can add some aftermarket tech goodies if you want.

I am really curious as to how a 21 year-old can afford to buy a Genesis and then start customizing it. There have been a few members in the past with rich parents who paid for the car (and some decided on some other car the Genesis after lurking here), but I don't get the feeling that is the case here, but maybe I am wrong.

Actually, I've paid for everything I own. I run my own web design company and also work 40 hrs at my other job 3 days a week.

I did notice that I am the youngest one here so far. But if your mind is set to be successful, then anything is possible. :)

I pretty much figured you did pay for it yourself. I hope you are not neglecting other things by buying a fancy car. I would recommend investing whatever spare cash you have, since now is the perfect time to invest in real estate (for you personal home) and finiancial instruments (stocks, etc).

Not at all, I'm also saving to purchase my own house in two years as there are very nice 3-5 bedroom brand new houses going really cheap!

Thank you everyone for giving their opinions concerning the trade in!

My God the topic here is about trading in an almost new 3,8 for one better equipped.

OP - at the very least, it wouldn't hurt to make some inquiries w/ local dealers as you what sort of deal you can get by "trading up."

Some dealer may be willing to give you a good deal just to make another sale.

The topic includes a discussion of the financial aspects of such a trade and the wisdom of doing it.

Back in 2009 there were several members who decided a week after purchase that the suspension was so unacceptable to them that they traded their car in and took about a $7K beating. I wouldn't trade-in a brand new car even for a $2K hit. If it were me, I would live without the extras untill my next car purchase a few years later and invest the $2K now for the future.
