How many 2012 owners have complained about the transmission to Hyundai?

I don't work for Hyundai and I think the tranny is fine in regular day to day driving. Anything beyond regular, dump the tranny into manual mode, knock it down a few steps, and row for your self.

There is no extra power train loss, my 3.8 is almost as quick as a 335i at highway speeds, it's faster than a 300C or a L460.

Change your own gears and you get full power, as easy as that.

Well...full power anywhere but when you launch it from stand still, traction control cannot be turned off and thus limits maximum power at take off...it's been been really bugging me. Absolutely no way to burn the tires. And to top it off, it spins them just fine in the rain!!!!!

I agree with Dragon64. The transmission is the weakest link in an otherwise great car. I love my R-spec :) , but the transmission drives me nuts. :(

I have no problems with the Aisin transmission that came on my 2009 3.8L, and I probably wouldn't have any problems with the 2012 Hyundai 8-speed transmissions either, but some of the above posters purchased the R-Spec, and they obviously (judging by their posts) like to accelerate and drive very fast. So while I don't condone street racing (which some of them clearly do), I am not going to criticize them just because they don't think the new transmission lives up to the R-Spec name, even if I might find it acceptable for my style of driving.

I have a 2012 4.6 and I too have noticed the transmission does not drop gears fast enough and does jerk. Situation is city driving 35-40 and you want to pass and it jerks when pressing the gas to pass. Other example is your standard rolling stop at a light turning right. You pull up fast and look left for clearance, you gas it and it jerks because you have not come to a complete stop to give the tranny time to downshift. I do not believe that the tranny downshifts when the accelerator is not pressed and the speed is reducing.

This is a problem and the ones that have not seen an issue are simply drinking too much of the Hyundai Kool-Aid.

They need to fix it before they spring the 10 speed on the world next year.

So far as you can tell more is not necessarily better in this case. That said the upshift is great! :)

It's sad that Hyundai would ham string such a great car -
by putting in one of the worst tansmissions I have ever come across
next to the 1934 Chrysler 3 speed - the 8 speed isn't much better :(

Seriously fellas -

Hyundai need to step up to the plate

They need paddle shifters -
Rev matching capability-

To go with a transmission that is sporty - engaging- and responsive.

The R Spec has such great potential - but this transmission kills it.

And judging by all the other responses - forum members, especially R Spec owners- are not happy.

I'm an R-Spec owner and never expected the R-Spec 8 spd auto, to be on par with BMW's SMG or VW's DSG. The new 8 spd's torque management slows down the process, considerably.

It will be nice when HMA comes up with a software update that enhances the tranny's capability. With regard to paddles and rev matching, I don't see it happening, at least not with the 5.0 8 spd.

I put the R-Spec through its paces prior to purchase and knew exactly how the trans acted and where it was limited. I bought the car and am very happy with it overall. Could it be improved? Sure, but so could every other car made. IMHO, the R-Spec is by far the best bang for the buck out there and I enjoy mine each and every time I drive it. I suspect most other R-Spec owners feel similarly.

Judging from what I'm reading on this forum - R Spec owners are NOT happy with the 8 speed " grandma klampit " slow as a turtle to shift transmission - it ruins the whole idea of this being a performance sedan.

The car would be great if it weren't for this issue -

and it's a serious issue -

Hyundai dropped the ball

Pick any product. No one posts on a message board if they are happy with the product. Message boards tend to attract the vocal minority. I am sure that some R Spec owners that wanted to purchase a much more sporty car than the one they bought are unhappy. Those that test drove the car and were happy, likely are still happy. I am confident that the vast, vast majority of the purchasers are happy with the 8 speed transmission.

Why would you buy a car that seems to make you so unhappy??? Didn't you drive it first???

If I wanted the feel of an M, an AMG or another Vette I would have gone in that direction. Instead I went with an R-Spec knowing full well what I was buying.

To some of us, the R-Spec is still great. Perfect???? No Great??? Yes.

Agreed

I've only had my '12 base 3.8 for a couple of weeks but so far, I have no problem with the tranny. I also have an MB CLK 500 with a 7 speed tranny. In auto mode, it shifts very similarly to the Hyundai 8. In tiptronic, the MB is a touch faster. In general, the two cars handle very similarly, comfy/sporty and pretty darned fast. CLK was about 50 grand in '06. If you ask me, the Genesis (tranny and all) is a bargain.

I love my Genny, and it puts a smile on my face every day, since it is my daily driver. :)

Let me say this again, slowly, and with great emphasis, since some of you equate not liking the transmission to not liking the car.

I love my Genny. :p

Now that you understand that, understand this: I don't like the transmission.

I love my Genny. :) (Just for those that got sidetracked over the transmission issue)

IMHO, the transmission is too slow to react in any mode. Too be perfectly honest, I haven't found any 8-speed tranny that I like, including BMW's. They all are slower to react than the previous generation 6 speeds. That being said, other brands are more responsive to throttle input or manual mode inputs than the Hyundai transmission. Overall, I liked the Genesis better than the other options, so I bought one knowing that is wasn't perfect. Therefore I am complaining about the Genesis transmission, not the BMW's transmission. Understand?

I love my Genny. :)

So what you are saying is that you !!!HATE!!! your Genesis? REALLY?. Just over an issue with the transmission?!?!?! Traitor!!!

:D Sorry, could not resist.

I never said the car made me unhappy - try reading my previous posts

The transmission makes me cringe

and it's the transmission that spoils a rather decent attempt by Hyundai to bring a performance sedan to market

What don't you understand ?

Did I drive the car before I bought it ?!!

come on now

In my opinion the R-Spec with the current tranny must leave the driver feeling like a teenager with blue balls. Almost to the hallowed place but not quite.

It's really a tranny fit for the 4.6 and 3.8 I think.

SlowPoke is right on the money :grouphug:

The car - as a whole - I love

the transmission - I am not pleased with - at all

the car could be so much more - with the proper transmission

that's all I'm saying....the R Spec owners know exactly what I'm on about

429 Horsepower deserves a sharp - intuitive - responsive transmission :)

I feel for the RSpec owners, but the transmission is what it is. It will not miraculously change with some sort of a software flash. The future plans are for a 10-speed transmission. So, I hope that you enjoy the car you bought.

A trans that causes you to cringe makes for an enjoyable or happy driving experience???

I am confused as to how one hates the trans in a car they love. If I hated the trans in the R-Spec, I wouldn't have bought one.

You can tell yourself that if it makes you feel better

But we all know the transmission blows

I feel great. I like my R-Spec tranny and all. As I said, if I hated the trans as much as you claim to (makes you cringe) I still be driving my C6. ;)

Enjoy your car.

I'm done with this one.

Test drove the R-Spec again last night and then the 4.6 to check on this as I'm really trying to narrow down my choices. I'm a manual guy at heart and the old 6-speed was great in the pre-2012's.

The biggest issue I noticed regarding the 8-speed in both vehicles was that when turning while under way (so, imagine foot off the gas to slow a bit into a turn) when you hit the gas again, there is a rough <jerk> as though there is a delay and then a drop into too-low a gear... followed by an immediate upshift.

If you throw it into manual mode right before and then again immediately post-jerk it appears to go from 5th or 6th gear down to 2nd then right up to 3rd.

SO... if you repeat the maneuver in manual mode as soon as you take your foot off the gas and manually drop to 3rd (vs. 2nd in auto mode) it's brilliant and smooth. That tells me it is VERY possible this can be corrected with a flash in the future. The move to the 7-speed in the Infiniti G37's was problematic and the newer models (and older after a transmission flash from Infiniti) are MUCH better.

I will say, the upshifting is EXCEPTIONALLY smooth with this transmission and "casual" driving downshifts are ok. It's the "spirited" downshifting that leaves little to be desired based on my test drives. Is it a deal breaker? We'll see as I have some time to purchase and I'm interested in Hyundai's response in the coming weeks/months. The 2013 Genesis Coupe is getting the same transmission with paddle shifters and that car is designed for spirited driving so I can only assume they are spending a LOT of time tuning the programming and let's hope that finds its way to the sedan!

What's really interesting to me is that everybody wants more and more gears in their automatics these days. As though, more is better. Keep in mind that the more gears you add, the more shifting that takes place, and the "brain" finding the right gear can be difficult as it needs to determine what the driver intends to do. And now you're talking 10-speed next year?? I have a 2011 Mustang getting lemoned because the manual transmission is garbage. It's a 5.0 and has no second or third gear so you have to shift 1-4 and there is NO shortage of power.
