  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Need some help! I am stationed in Germany and while I was on leave i got a great deal on a 2012 Black on Black R-Spec (39K out the door). So needless to say I bought it. I will be returning to the states for a few weeks next month and wanted to know if anyone had a great route to take from Kansas to Florida. I have ordered my new Redline Radar detector so hopefully that will help when i feel the need to experiment:D I plan on doing some highway and back road driving just to test out my new baby...... lol

To clear the record, i didn’t have the car shipped to Germany because I am actually moving back to the states in May 12. I really want to have this thing on the A6 or A3 because there are some stretches of the Autobaun that I would love to test out, plus i would like to see how she really runs against a few 335s and 550s that blow by me now ..... Thanks in advance for any help.

How flexible are you on drive time and routing? What are your definitions of "back roads"? I find the Rspec is a good solid performer on 2 lane relatively straight roads with some curves. Its good on moderate to low speed sweepers, but tends to roll a bit as the speeds rise. It is definitely not a good car on the really tight stuff, ie "The Tail of the Dragon". If you think of it as a 7 series BMW, any road you'd take the 7 would probably be ok for the Rspec. It is definitely not as good a handler as good 5 series much less a 3, however it is a great long distance freeway crusier and 4 lane hwy driver......enjoy.

No advice on the route, but a question instead:
How many miles on your car? I only ask because of the breakin period described in your OM and in this great thread:

"I decided on a route that mixed highways and backroads, as I had read in the owner’s manual that one shouldn’t drive at constant speeds for a long period of time during the "break-in" period. It also mentioned to keep the revs between 2,000 and 4,000 RPM. After missing a couple of turns due to a) my unfamiliarity with the navigation system “timing” and b) being slightly in awe of my new purchase, I was cruising on the highway."

Have a great trip!

If you have an R-Spec, I would stay on the interstates. You will be tempted to speed, and if so, more likely to get caught speeding on local roads, and more likely to need to be bailed out of jail in a small town.

BTHBC: I currently have 3k on the car.... My friend drives the car while I am in Germany and I was able to spend about 30 days breaking it in already while I was on leave.

Jaboyd: I am pretty flexible. I was going to take about 3 days travel time. When I say back roads, I am mainly talking about 2 lane roads, nothing to crazy.. Ill jump on my Gixxer for those roads....Ok treat it like a 7 series.... Got it.. Thanks a ton..I am excited to drive her again...

Sweet. Apple maps suggests 3 routes, all a little over 1500 miles, though that was a search for Kansas to Florida (non city specific). Personally, I'd take the route through Nashville and spend the night there. Good music and food.
Plus the route south of there includes some good hills and curves even on the interstate.
You'll make your own adventures and have a great time regardless!
(btw, I rode the Horse Chicago to Orlando twice last year. Get ready for the looks and comments on your Gen!)

Yes, I trust my friend that much (childhood Friend)! plus what the hell its only a car....

Thanks for the tips (keep them coming) so far it looks like i will take the St. Louis, Nashville, ATL, to Jacksonville. Should be fun.. excited about the trip...

For what it's worth, Readers Digest has a book named "The Most Scenic Drives in America". I'm certain there are other books out there as well. Unfortunately there aren't too many routes in the south but if you are willing to go north more can be driven. I've had my R Spec for just 6 months and already have 10K miles on it. Zero problems to date. 24.6 MPG at 78 MPH. Have fun. Make sure you know how the active cruise control works. I've learned to use the "Cancel" button quite a bit.

I live in Knoxville, TN and chose to live here for the fantastic roads and scenery. The drive from Kansas to Nashville via the interstate is pretty boring but once you are east of Nashville the roads/driving improves. An easy drive is to head south from Nashville on I 24 from Nashville towards Chattanooga if you want interstate driving or thru Lynchburg, TN for some Jack Danials and backroads. Then the direction depends on where in FL you're headed. If its the panhandle or central FL either take the backroads thru AL (there are some really nice, but flat routes) or western GA. If you're headed towards the east coast of FL I strongly recommend a drive thru the southern end of the Smokys and Cherokee Nat'l forest into the south western edge of NC and down thru SC into FL. If at all possible take rt 64 east out of Chattanooga into NC and drive rt 28...lots of water falls, moderately tight roads but at a reasonable pace. For reference, it is about an 8 hr drive from Chattanooga via the Smokys to Jacksonville, FL. If you haven't been to St Augustine, FL you should stop off there for food and sight seeing. You can get some really inexpensive rooms at the Golfing Resort that's just off of I 75 west of St Augustine.

Let me know if you what more percise directions/recommendations.

If you're on I-75 in Ga, don't let the radar detector lead you astray, the GHP use a lot of laser speed detectors and instant on radars my Valentine misses. Detectors are getting to be out technologied.

Yep, watch it around Perry GA on I-75. GHP has all their high tech stuff along there. Also Georgia has a new ticket law that is for super speeders which can cost you a Grand.
