  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Does anyone know how to install the KDM airbag with the KDM badge? I have heard from a few people that the dealers will not install it, and my own dealership couldnt say for certain if they would install it until they saw the part. It says it can be done in 15 minutes, shouldnt be too hard, just want to know if anyone has done this or has had it done to their car.

The whole description & cost is in here somewhere. People have done it already and dealers have installed it. That said, you have to be certified/licensed to work on airbags, hence the dealer is needed. Apparently it is plug & play (quick to do), but not sure what else they do to 'certify' the install.

Thanks for the info Ric. I am hoping my dealership will install this without giving me any hassles, if not though I need a backup plan.

I don't get it that dealers are hesitant. Aren't these OEM airbags??

Sure, and you can have them order it and they will be happy to install it, but it's $$$. Their hesitancy, I'm sure, is when you walk in the door juggling the one you bought on eBay. They really have no clue where it came from and yet will be forced to 'certify it'. Potential liability issue.

Very good point Ric. The fact that they arent getting money on both ends (sale and install) Im sure is the biggest motivating factor. I would like to know if there is any packaging or paperwork that could state that this is a KDM product and not an aftermarket part that is made by some unknown company.

I'm pretty sure if you order it, it comes shrink wrapped in the MOBIS parts bag, with part # , etc. I think you hit the key point that they get no 'mark up' on the actual part sale, just what they can stick you for on the install.

After some hesitation and a couple failed attempts with my dealership I was successful with the installation of my Genesis airbag. The dealership made the arrangements with their certified Body Shop to do the install. It took less than 30 minutes and really looks Great! As mentioned in some of the previous posts, the hesitation was dealership liability. Since Body Shops regularly install airbags following collisions and air bag deployments they did not have an issue with it.
The technician compared all the data from the OEM and Genesis air bag and everything matched. One key issue is, if they do not disconnect the electrical source prior to installation the system will register an airbag deployment which will require a system reset of some sort. Thankfully the technician that did mine was aware of that fact. Hope this helps!

Presumably they killed the power by unhooking the battery. That in itself upsets a lot of stuff, including the windows and the sunroof! You need to click here and review the TSB and do the stuff they recommend, unless of course the body shop guy did it. [doubt it]

I got my KDM airbag from KAI and it was in the OEM MOBIS bag. My dealer installed with no hesitations or problems. The service dept. told me that a year or so ago there was a recall on Sonata airbags and that one of their techs was an expert at swapping out the airbags. The entire process took about 20 mins and they charged me $45. there are pics in my album on the pictures page.

just thought this was interesting,
when you look at the 2 airbags, on the back they are identical, same #'s, plugs, everything. The only difference is that the one with the flying H has capital "NA" embossed on the metal at the top right corner. maybe North America, I don't know. That is what we assumed.

BaywayRic,

Thanks for the TSB information. BTW, where did you find the TSB information and is there a special way it must be accessed? I checked my car and all the automatic functions are working properly...Apparently someone did something right!

Since we are on the subject of airbag replacements and I along with a few others have accomplished this spectacular upgrade...Does anyone know of a market for the airbags with the "Flying H" that we removed? I would love the ability to get a little bit of return on this item to offset the cost of the replacement one.

Best place, in case you missed it, is to sign-up here:

http://www.hmaservice.com/

You have access to all manuals, TSBs, troubleshooting, etc.

Second best is to use the search function here. Do a "tag" search for "tsb", etc.

Or, you can visit my SkyDrive where I keep all Genesis related materials that are too big to fit on this site.

If you ever are involved in a car accident, you'll need one....so hang on to it!

I agree. FOr what you would get for it if you put it on ebay or something similar it is worth it just to hang onto it. You never know when you will need it.

IF you're really bent on getting rid of your "old" airbag I'm sure scrap yards in your area would give you good money for it.

Thanks all for the replies about keeping or possibly selling my old airbag to a local scrap yard. I think I will pursue the selling route simply for the fact if I were involved in an airbag deploying accident; I would still want to go with the "winged emblem" airbag as a replacement. I wonder if KAI offers a price guarantee of some sort...for us that purchased the airbag at the + $60.00 increased cost? I guess one can only hope!

Hey guys, do you know whether the dark beige/grey airbag is made for the cashmere interior? Or is it for the "Saddle" or brownish interior? Thanks in advance.
