  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

GPS map updates

$199??? Why can Garmin offer it for less than half that and even for FREE on some of their new units, for LIFETIME updates? I have a problem with ALL the car companies that tie overpriced navigation units to a package with better sound, backup cameras etc including Hyundai (Sonata for one)

I found some roads missing in my 2010 touchscreen. I went to the dealer to inquire about the update. They wanted $340. Don't think so, Tim! I just went to the mapnsoft website, and can't download the latest update. I have to go to the dealer for the access code. Let me guess, that'll be $340. What a rip off.

Why? Because once you buy the car they have a monopoly on the map updates.

I asked my dealer about an update for my 2010 touch screen nav. They advised me to check with MapNSoft, which I did. For 2010 models their site lists only an update for the non-touch screen (Tech package) nav, and says to contact my dealer (!). So I emailed them and here's what they said:

Thank you for contacting the MNSoft Map Center.

The most current map update that will be available for your Touch screen Hyundai Genesis is version 04.04.15
The vehicle map version may be found under the ‘SETUP’ menu under system information.

Map updates are released every year in the fourth quarter.

The map update is installed via a DVD Media drive.
The map updates are performed via DVD provided by MNSoft through the DVD drive available in your Hyundai vehicle.
The map updates are available at our website: http://www.mapnsoft.com/ and also from our Call Center.

If you require further assistance, please contact the map center at 888-757-0010 or 1-714-775-0727 (PST 6am to 5pm M-F, 6am to 12pm Sat), or email info@mapnsoft.com.

I plan to give them a call and see if the info in the email is accurate; if so I'll order the update (my current version is 1.09.13, which is a fair amount older than 04.04.15).

Update - I just called. They said the info is accurate and I have ordered - $199. We'll see how the install goes.
Anxious to hear how this goes. I believe the update will be the same for the Canadian touchscreen. My 2010 version is quite out of date as I found out driving across Canada and the US last summer.
Hope it is as easy as you've described for me to get "my own" update rather than pay a dealer (here they don't really seem to know how to do it or want to).

I browsed the Mapnsoft website and didn't find much for the Genesis.

For a '99 Sonata they wanted $199 for an update with this caveat attached:

"** Attention Customers: All Navigation, Bluetooth and Audio Settings (Previous Destinations, Home Addresses, Phone Numbers, Phonebook Contacts, Radio Presets, etc) will be erased during the map software update procedure"

I received the update DVD yesterday. I plan to install over the weekend. According to the instructions it will take about 90 minutes for the software to install, then I have to contact MNSoft to get an authorization number and then plug that in in order to activate the new install. We'll see how it goes.

$199 for an update! You can buy a better Garmin for that amount with FREE updates quarterly. Hyundai and all the other companies are ripping off car buyers because you have to buy the GPS to get numerous other options. Even if I buy a car with a GPS I would never pay to have it updated when I have the Garmin.
Has anyone ever compared the directions on a in dash unit versus?
Also, does anyone know who provides the GPS for Hyundai?

Do you get the feeling I don't like being ripped off for a GPS???

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!

I will second this! I have had dealers basically tell me they are not interested in doing the update because it takes so long, too many things can go wrong and Hyundai only pays them for .5 hours labour. I had the map updated at the same time they did a software update at one dealer and they pooched the Navigation part trying to do the map update. They couldn't figure out how to fix it so they ended up replacing the head unit.

The ability exists for Hyundai to do the map updates and software updates via USB stick which is much easier to do without screwing it up, but the DVD method makes it harder for anyone to copy so they can keep cashing in!

good luck, hope it goes well. Looking forward to hearing about your "experience" with the update
Finally got around to installing the update. It's not difficult - just pay close attention to the instructions.

One point is unclear - one of the steps tells you to press the Reset button and then the Power button. But it does not specify where the Reset button is - turns out it is a small opening in the round gadget to the right of the CD/DVD player, where the blue light glows when a disc is inserted. You unbend a paper clip (or whatever) and poke it in the hole to reset the system.

The entire process takes about 90 minutes, and then when it's finished it displays the device code for the nav. You go to mapnsoft.com and input the device code, your VIN, and the "serial number" (which is nowhere to be found). I called mapnsoft and they said just enter 12345 for the SN, which seems to work. Then you take the authentication code that mapnsoft provides in response to your inputs and enter it in the nav through the screen that is displayed.

This is very much like installing any software, which, being a software developer, I am quite accustomed to doing. If Hyundai will only allow 1/2 hour for this process I can see why dealers are not too enthusiastic about installing map upgrades. True, a lot of the time is taken by the actual file transfer process, but the ancillary stuff (going to mapnsoft to get the auth code, etc) can easily total more than 30 minutes.

Has anyone ever verified the accuracy of the navigation data? Is the longitude and lattitude accurate as well as altitude? My house is a couple hundred feet south of where its shown on the map. I know the best the altitude can do is within 100' increments. I also know my speedometer and the unit are off 2-3 mph.

I just checked the website mentioned and got this: "Unfortunately, an update for this vehicle is not available now.
Please visit again for an update or call at 1-(888)757-0010 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time."

This is pretty much bull****. Had the car nearly a YEAR and NO MAP updates? Don't forget that it also includes addresses and phone numbers for businesses, etc. No update. What a load of crap. THUMBS DOWN, Hyundai and "MapnSoft"....two thumbs down.

Update: Called the number listed above and was told that there are no "2012 map updates available for 2012 vehicles because they are 2012 vehicles." No kidding. Told her that I've had the car for nearly a year, but her response was, well, it's a 2012 vehicle. It's 2012 now. No update."

Gawd.

Toyota make update every 3 years. Now it's 2011 update and the next are in 2014.
But in my Venza 2011 with Nav package the data of the map are on DVD. The radio have 4cd changer and 2nd slot for the DVD of the maps. My dealer said the update cost about 200$ , but, sometime, the DVD are droped in burner and magically the cost of the update are very low

I think the Genesis have a little hard drive to keep data ?

I've already had my Navi updated twice since purchase !

how much did you for the updates?? My dealership quoted ridiculously high 199$(disk )+ 4.5 manhours for scanner time ~ just under 500$... this just does not make any sense, sorry. i am not doing that..

Such update is only possible for V8 3.6L trim. V8 4.6L vehicle owners will have to visit the dealer and it will cost 199$ + 3 or 4 man-hours of labor due to use of scanner.. I wrote Hyundai customer service an email what do they think of this.. will see what they respond. In the meantime I am using my lifetime updatable Garmin as a backup unit in case I get lost..

This whole subject reminds me of the 2009 suspension controversy. After the Genesis Sedan suspension was upgraded by Hyundai in 2010, many of us contacted HMA to inquire about upgrading our 2009 suspension to 2010 specs. Not only did HMA refuse to do it at a discount, they even refused to provide any helpful information on how we could order the parts and pay for the upgrade ourselves (either through a dealer provided upgrade package or just suppling us with part numbers so we could have it done by an independent shop).

The HMA response was: if you don't like your 2009 suspension, trade it in for a 2010 model. So if you don't like your old maps, trade your car in for a newer model (or pay our outrageous map upgrade fees for newer maps that are that are not actually current, but somewhat newer than what you have).

I fought hard to get my maps updated when I bought my 2009 Genny (new) with OLD software. Now I don't care anymore; my android does so much better .....

the new leg of Houston's Highway 90 isn't in my GPS map system. The road runs between BW8 and 610. It has been built at least a year to a year and a half ago. It isn't a dinky road either. I have a 2012 R spec BTW.
