Mysterious Abnormal Engine Sound after Service - SOLVED

Hi, I think I can use some help from you guys. Hope someone can help me solve this mystery of abnormal engine sound. (Video clip link below.)

Background:
  • Mine is a 2010 Genesis 4.6 with 19,000 miles
  • Brought my car to Round Rock Hyundai Service Department and did the following:
  1. Fuel injection system flush
  2. Oil Change (Synthetic)
  3. Engine Air Filter
  4. Cabin Air Filter

Issue:
After doing above 4 things, I noticed the engine would make an abnormal engine sound when I slowly ramp up the engine at low RPM. I can hear the abnormal sound in all gears and in 6th gear is most noticeable.

Video link to YouTube: http://youtu.be/Aq1UsPtGEIQ

My steps to reproduce:
  1. Find a not busy highway access road. (I could actually reproduce it on a highway but the road noise will be too much for others to hear.)
  2. Slowly speed up the car to 6th gear
  3. Maintain the car at 1,500 RMP
  4. Let go the gas paddle and let the RMP drop to 1,250
  5. Now, slowly squeeze the gas paddle to ramp up the engine
  6. The abnormal engine sound can be heard easily between 1,250 to 1500 RMP. After that the primary engine sound will dominate.

What have been done so far:
  1. Service Manager at Round Rock Hyundai put in a bottle of fuel additive and told me to fill up the car to see if the problem would go away when the entire tank of gas was used up. The answer is no.
  2. Brought the car to Round Rock Hyundai again and the new Service Manager took a new Genesis 4.6 on the lot and could not reproduce the abnormal engine sound.
  3. The new Service Manager said she would bring the issue to the attention of “Hyundai Field Engineer”. (I will call her next Wed to get an update.)

Hope someone here can answer the questions of:
  1. What sound is that?
  2. Is that engine sound normal?
  3. If you are a 4.6 owner, does your car make the same engine sound in the condition I described?

Thanks for any info, assistance in advanced!

Regards,

What sound is that? No idea
Is that engine sound normal? Not normal
If you are a 4.6 owner, does your car make the same engine sound in the condition I described? No, my car does not make this noise.

Check the obvious stuff first. Check to see if the air box was put back on correctly, if the filter isn't getting pinched and the clips are all on tight. Check the oil level to see if they did this properly. Not sure what a Fuel injection system flush is, these cars don't need any type of fuel system maintenance.

Fuel system treatment = something recommended for GDI engines, but something they upsell for non-GDI Genny owners to make a buck. My local dealer wanted $50... for a can of $5 gas treatment.

Just a swag, but I have a Ford V10 in a motorhome. I have a Scangauge hooked into the diagnostic port that provides data from the computer. On a long uphill climb, the computer will go from closed loop control to open loop control. When it does that, the engine sounds different------sharper and more urgent.

Does your car do the same thing whether it's cold or fully warmed up?

Definitely not what I consider a normal sound.
To me it almost sounded like some sort of intake reverberation, but I can't be sure.

Mystery solved.

TJ was right. Check the basic stuff first and ………. it was the air filter!!!

I do not know how it was wrongly put in.

I popped out the cover, took out the air filter, put the filter back, and then put the cover back. The sound went away!!!

Thanks again TJ and everyone here trying to help.

You need to take it in and tell the Dealer GM how incompetent their people are and how they failed to try and troubleshoot the issue. Instead it was the old standard answer of cant reproduce or that's the way all of them are.

If I were the GM and found out it was an improperly installed air filter. I would go ballistic in the shop.

Cool good news. Although I would be tempted to piss and moan to the dealer, I know I'm basically wasting my energy. I would mention it to them, and leave it at that. Like the saying goes, you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself. I avoid the dealership like the plague.

Just another reason to ALWAYS check your car over...open the hood, and check things...check the oil for CLEAN oil...anways CHECK the air filter 'cause if the filter didn't look dirty, they could always vacuum it off and reinstall it and sell it back to you....always check...

which tells me...after you noticed this odd sound, did you not pop the hood an look around?

Just asking...

I realize that it is not convenient for everyone to change their own oil, but if one has to double check the air filter after paying a dealer to replace it, why not just replace it yourself?
