  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

This may be a silly question: does anyone wax their car after washing it themselves? If so, what do you use?

It seems like a lost art but “back in the day” I used to enjoy waxing my cars after washing. More recently I bought car wash that has wax in it or started using a car wash at the gas station that includes wax.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say MOST people don't even wash their cars, never mind wax them. lol

I used to wax my cars as well, but after ceramic coating became the mainstream go-to,....that's what I've been doing. I had my G70 professionally ceramic coated before I picked it up from the dealership. It's better than wax, in many ways, but it does help with minor scratching/marring when washing your car and can last up to 3 to 5 years, depending on the coating life that you get. That's if you do the regular maintenance when washing, which is super easy.

We only just got a GV60 (Hanauma Mint, cloudy/rainy) and it doesn't show the effect very well...but our Ioniq 6 does.. Hand brush washed...clay bar rubdown...two layers of cerakote applied two days before the heavy coastal mist/drizzle settled.
You can't tell from looking at pictures how smooth and slick it feels.
Proper prep takes some energy but the product itself is pretty easy...light misting...light spreading/evening/polishing...
The GV60 went to work on day one. It stayed home and I gave it the treatment the next day, to beat the oncoming rain.
I am in no way affiliated with cerakote or anybody selling or marketing it.
But, you asked. I say make it shine.

Thanks for the responses.

My G70 is garage kept and will likely only be driven 5 or 6 k miles a year. For now I’m gonna go with hand wash in the driveway and wax it a few times a year.

Thats me. I use a “ceramic” cleaner wax from local stores.

I haven’t hand waxed my car since I’ve have real responsibilities with a career and family.

hand wax vs one of these ceramic/graphene sprays?

It’s tempting to spend $150 or so for wax. But I’m old enough that I have gotten tired of being disappointed by overly hyped products. I have a close friend who spent $1,500 per car for Ceramic on a 911S and BMW M8. It had a five year guarantee, but you have to pay them a couple hundred a year to put some sort of top coat on it.

Ceramic coating all the way, do it yourself as I did. I use Avalon King, and it's the best out there for the money.
I just looked at the Avalon King sight. It looks like the product itself is easy enough to apply, and the price I would pay if I believe in it.

I’m curious as to what prep it needs first. I keep my car in great condition, but I assume the coating of wax I have on it needs to be removed in some form or fashion. I’d appreciate your thoughts on prep. I should say that I have a lot of experience with clay bar and I have both an orbital and circular buffer and a variety of mild products for getting out surface swirl marks etc.

Thanks for your input!

Every bottle comes with a guide on how to prep. I do this: wash the car, clay the entire car, then, using a machine, buff the entire car with 3M Perfect-It Ultrafine Machine Polish, 06068 (this is what I use). Now its ready for the coating. I have been using it for years, and I have to say my car stays 50% cleaner than with normal waxing products. Also, it lasts for no less than two years (in my experience), depending on your climate and how you store your car. All my cars are garaged, and my wife's car I did in 2018. I just reapplied it to the hood and trunk this past January.

This pic is from the Black E550 I had, and this pic was taken after two years. We all know how black cars are a nightmare to keep looking nice. I hardly ever had to work much to keep it looking great. I got compliments all the time, and the paint was 13 years old.

Thanks. I used 3M at times but have other similar products out in the garage now. I have owned many black cars and swore them off about 20 years ago. But my Genesis is Black and I justified it by the fact that I’m retired and I don’t have to drive it in the rain usually and have plenty of time on my hands to take care of it.

If you go the ceramic route, you will see it will stay cleaner.
