Genesis Forums - The Genesis Owners Group

What's on your mind?
Hey guys, I wanted to start a thread to document the progression of my Genesis over the next few months. Its always fun to look back at the progress of the car and see how the modifications completely change the look of the car. First I'll layout my plan and I will update the thread with pictures of the parts as they arrive and as they are installed.

1. Debadge both front and rear - DONE
2. Fill front and rear holes, repaint front bumper and trunk
3. Window tint - 5% all around with 15% on the windshield - DONE
4. Velgen VMB Wheels - 20x9 front and 20x10.5 rear - ORDERED
5. Tires - TBD - most likely going with Nitto Invo
6. Ceika Type 1M Coilovers with helper springs - ORDERED
7. Drilled front and rear rotors from Adam's Rotors - ORDERED
8. Electronic exhaust cutouts - brand and placement TBD
9. Replace Factory Air intake tubing and filter with custom made intakes
10. Install Blinder HP905 Laser blinders

I will update the thread with pictures of the window tint this afternoon or this evening. I will also add pictures of the rear debadged currently, the holes are scheduled to be filled and areas repainted in two weeks.

Unfortunately there are not many aftermarket companies that support the Genesis Sedan platform so most of the work has to be custom. I realize not everyone will be supportive of modifications this extensive to this car and that's fine. For those of you that are excited about the build I appreciate your time and interest.

My goal is a clean daily driver with simple modifications. Let's get started!

Hah. Duly noted. I only know about them because I used to install & configure them in our squad cars back in the day. Just be forewarned - the use of them in some states ranks considerably higher than a traffic/moving infraction. Also - don't be surprised if they ineffective in several areas, as the end up using different patterns and timings for trigger. Just my $.07. :)

Thanks for the info!

First off Huddleston beautiful build, just finished looking through all 43 pages and the transformation. I have had my '15 5.0 with the fastest color around like you :) for just over a year now and just hit 10,000 miles. So thought it was time to start playing around and modding the beauty. I have reached out to local shop Vivid Racing here in Arizona and they are in the process of working with me. They did inform me that the problem with the factory ECU is no one except 1 company has cracked the coding. The software they made is also pretty garbage. Blood Type Racing is pretty much the only US shop that has it as well. They get decent results but as I understand it, the factory ecu doesn't have the hardware or resolution to really fine tune it for things like turbos, superchargers, etc. The best solution would be a standalone engine management solution. With one of those, the skit is literally the limit and we can do some really cool things. The biggest drawback with them, is because they are a motorsport ecu, there is no support for emissions control or readiness monitors, therefor won't pass an ODB2 emissions test. So starting in June of this year they are going to take my car for about 8 weeks and do their magic. If you look at the custom work Vivid Racing has done in the past they are known for being the first on quite a few different cars out there. Very excited and I will keep the forum updated as having that Twin Turbo setup like the SEMA car would be amazing.

Hey Huddleston - What hub measurement and offset did you get when buying the Velgens? I’m looking at purchasing a ‘15 Genesis 5.0 and want to get my mods lined up to purchase them right away and love the look/height of your ride.

I think he "left" our forum.

As for the Velgens.....I fell in love with them. I had VMB5, VMB7 and again VMB5 v2.

specs: 9x20 et32 front and 10.5 et45 rear ....perfect fit for RWD/AWD

I need help, in more ways than one, but I'll limit it to my car.

Does anybody know how to completely turn off the speed camera warning?

Every time I come home from my daughter's, I go through a school zone where the normal speed is 25 mph. There is a speed camera installed. During school hours the speed drops to 20 mph. The car sees the 20 mph and doesn't care if it's midnight, the weekend, or summer break; it thinks the speed limit is 20 mph, not 25. So when I drive 25, I have to listen to that #!**!@! warning bong for the better part of a minute until I pass the camera.

Please help me. Anybody? Anybody? Beuller?

I am familiar with this as well. I think it only happens when in the native navigation screen. Would you confirm that you are in native navigation when this occurs.
I use AA and Waze 99% of the time and don't get the chime when using Waze.
G
Don't have to be using native navigation for the sound to occur. But maybe be outside of carplay or Android Auto, would make sense

Nope. We are almost always using Apple CarPlay and looking at Google Maps.

Yes, but turning down the audio in native nav silences the camera alerts. It still changes the color of my speedometer to highlight the warning but isn't yapping at me.

I would still love to hear the answer to the original question. I couldn't find it and am only offering the compromise that I found. It works, but isn't optimal.

I think I may have figured out how to do it, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Went into Setup... Sound Settings... Guidance... Guidance Volumes... and set the Alert Volume to zero.

We'll see if it works.

Had a chance to try it today. It worked!

Got the red speed warning (incorrectly) but no audible alerts.

Ordered 2 1/2 weeks ago. Got a tracking number 10 days ago. Finally arrived today. After the delays and shipping, and back-and-forth on whether it was completed or not, I finally got my product. Installed as easy as the video shows. Took me about 35 minutes in the Texas heat. Works like a charm.

Hi guys, I have a 2019 Genesis G70 3.3 T with 68,000 miles on it. For the last week or so I have noticed a coolant smell after a drive. The coolant reservoir is only slightly low. I wasn’t too worried about that because I had to add a touch of coolant to it last summer. Today I was driving normally when the warning light came on saying the engine was overheating and the temperature gauge was almost to the red so I pulled over and I put my hand in front of the radiator and it was blowing cool air against my hand like it wasn’t circulating the coolant properly. Right before the warning came on I noticed the air conditioner stopped blowing cold. So I had the car towed home. I’ve looked over the engine, and I cannot see any drips anywhere. Any advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like you have fluid, so that is not the problem. I'd start with the thermostat, possibly not opening problem.

I'm assuming you see the belts and water pump is turning, but there could be other problems with it. Less likely is a hose collapsing.
G
Yeah I agree not a fluid problem. I’ve thought about the thermostat but it seems like most get a code with that and I have no codes. I’ve also considered that the impeller might have come off the water pump. I’m going to try and take the serpentine belt off and manually turn the pump to see if I can feel anything. Thanks for the reply and let me know if you think of anything else.

Stuck thermostat won't usually throw a code. Happened on both my 2 previous Gennies. First was actually stuck OPEN, so no heat in the winter. Second stuck closed and caused overheating.

That's for failures of the electric heat coil in the thermostat that allows the PCM some control over thermostat temperature, not for failures of the thermostat to open/close.
G
If you smell coolant, you have a leak. They can be small enough where it evaporates on a hot surface before it hits the ground. Check the cooling system for leaks by running a pressure test on the cooling system when the engine is cold.

A leak will cause your system to not hold the proper pressure which can lead to overheating.

As the subject says - getting attached messages after manually updating (May maps/update) the car. I let the Maps/MM OTA expire, b/c I don't mind doing this manually and I see little value in paying for it - but NOW, with this latest update, it seems to indicate that it uses online only and falls back to off-line maps only for connectivity issues... and even though (I checked) the Map OTA subscription doesn't say anything about this feature, I'm wondering - anyone else see these msgs? Or, am I the only one who let the Maps OTA subscription lapse? I _did_ dbl-check with the USB, says it's the same version as to what I have.

I read that the new version sources from Google in real time.
G
I read that the new version sources from Google in real time.
Right - that is why I'm suspecting the map OTA subscription right now be a requirement, but so far customer support says no
G
Solved, seemingly. I had three phone calls, two different divisions of maps and one with Genesis connected services. Everybody said that the Map OTA subscription is not required, even the release notes indicate the other subscription services. I even reinstalled the May update, with no change in behavior

But once I repurchased the Map OTA subscription, the air went away, it seemingly downloaded another update, and now everything is hunky-dory. Honestly this is what I suspected the entire time. Documented here in case anyone else encounters this

I’ve been looking at upgrading my older G80 to a 2026 model, and while I love almost everything about the refresh, I’m really torn on the new interior layout.

Specifically, the huge 27" OLED screen that runs across the entire dashboard.

I know the reviews are raving about it looking futuristic, but to me, it feels like Genesis is falling into the same trap as everyone else by just slapping a giant screen on the dash. I always loved how the older models had the infotainment screen beautifully recessed into the dashboard. It felt classy, minimalist, and very integrated.

This new one feels like it just sits on top of the dash like an afterthought. It doesn't feel right to me. Plus, for those who already have it, how bad is the glare on sunny days? Do you find yourself constantly wiping fingerprints off the passenger side of the glass?

Curious to hear if anyone else actually prefers the older, more traditional luxury look, or if I'm just being old fashioned.

I prefer the integrated screen in the dash like in my 2015 Genesis and my 2020 G90. Seems like more thought was put into the design. Let's face it, screens are a cost saving measure. Saves on a lot of materials by replacing buttons, gauges, wiring with a screen. At least some manufacturers are getting the message and putting the most commonly used buttons back in their new cars...

While we're at it, bring back analog gauge clusters on higher end cars. Doesn't look like they belong. It's like looking at a digital Rolex... it's not right... lol
M
I went with an older G70 just to stay away from some the digital controls.

My mom wanted a GV70 or GV80 but refused to buy one with the screen.

If this digital cockpit trend continues there probably won't be a used car market at some point....We all know that screen will suck in 5-7 years.
F
@SuperKing is hitting the nail right on the head here. These big 27" panoramic displays are a cost saving measure masquerading as cutting edge luxury.

It's way cheaper for a manufacturer to source one big glass panel from an electronics supplier than it is to design, wire, and fit a beautifully integrated dashboard with physical analog clusters, custom bezels, and hidden vents.

But to @MrMegadeth’s point about the used market... what choice do we actually have moving forward? If you don't like the big screens, where do you go? BMW has the giant curved iDrive display, Mercedes has the massive Hyperscreen, and Audi is doing the triple screen setup.

At least Genesis had the decency to leave us a physical rotary wheel and dedicated knobs for the climate control so we aren't crashing into a ditch trying to adjust the AC. It might look a bit like a digital Rolex, but compared to what Tesla or Rivian are doing by stripping every single button out of the cabin, the Genesis setup feels like a reasonable compromise between 2026 tech and traditional usability.

I remember being an a mall that had a Tesla dealer around 2020, and when I looked inside the car and saw one big squarish screen and very little else, I said to my self, "I don't think I can own a car with a bland dashboard like that". That being said, the newer Genesis dash looks a lot better than the 2020ish Tesla did. I could probably get used to it in a short period of time.
Different strokes for different folks, but I like a dash with a lot of gauges and dials. Some new cars use all dials and some use the screen, but I like the 2021 Genesis because you can control a lot of stuff with dials and with the screen. Your choice.....The best of both worlds.

I’d be interested in seeing that cost comparison, if you have it available.

I am posting for my son who has a 2015 Hyundai Genesis, essentially a G80, with many shared parts.

His electrically-driven power steering has failed, and the Hyundai dealer has quoted $8,000 to replace it. That is about the value of the car if everything was working and it was sold in a private transaction! It doesn't make sense financially to put that much money into it.

He can find the part online for about $1000.

Does anyone know of a shop that will work on a Hyundai Genesis (and/or Genesis, my G90 will be out of extended warranty someday)?

The independent shops here in Tupelo, MS have more business than they know what to do with and refused to look at it for diagnosis and repair.

Thanks,

Justin

Hi. I'm usually on Genesis Owners about my 2019 G90, but today I need some help troubleshooting my son's 2015 Hyundai Genesis 3.8. The local Hyundai dealer refuses to work on it despite it being a Hyundai (they don't have the Genesis dealership) and previously selling them, as they say they've had "bad luck working on them". Same for the dealer an hour South. The dealer at which I bought my G90 has the worst customer service of ANY business I've ever done business with, despite going through a new service manager every year. I cannot get a return call (of someone on the phone) while they have my car last time for 8 of the 12 weeks they had it, and in the end, they still didn't get the trunk issue I've had since purchase fixed. So, they're not an option. The next closest is Cool Springs in South Nashville, 3.5 hours away, but just drove by them today and it looks like the shop is in a complete demolition/rebuild.

My son has tried to troubleshoot this himself by purchasing a code reader and even dropped it for a few weeks at the local import car maintenance shop, and got a call that they could not reproduce the complete lack of power steering that happens unpredictably.

He is thinking of purchasing a used electric power steering rack (he says this is the first year or two the Genesis had electric steering rather than hydraulic) and just getting the local import dealer to replace it for him.

Is intermittent failure of the electric power steering a known issue with these vehicles? If so, what are the potential causes? He has looked at the service manual documents but doesn't want to tackle it himself. He thinks it may be a network/communications problem since the steering motor works fine when it is working.

The error codes he's getting haven't been helpful.

Thanks for any help/suggestions!

Regards,

Justin

My first stab at it would be to disconnect the electrical connections related to the unit and inspect for corrosion. Clean them up with some de-ox spray and maybe put a little dielectric grease on the seals on the connectors and then re-mate them. See if that makes any difference with the issue. Are the under-covers still installed? I've heard of problems developing with the steering when the undercover is left off.

Just got a call and email with video showing issues. The video shows the voltage measured at the electrical connections to be as expected in the service manual. They are quoting him $8,000 to replace the "MOTOR DRIVEN POWER STEERING MODULE". The car is only worth $9000 sold to an individual in great condition, and much less if traded in. It doesn't make sense to replace the steering module at this price.

My son looked the part up online and can get one for $1000, but none of the independent shops in my area are willing to work on the car. In fact, the local Hyundai dealers in my hometown of Tupelo, MS and an hour away in Columbus, MS refused to work on the 2015 Hyundai Genesis, even though it is a Hyundai! The dealer that it is with now is two hours away.

Does anyone know of any independent shops in Memphis, TN or Birmingham, AL that would tackle replacing the power steering module?

Or, is there a part of the steering module that can be replaced or overhauled, such as a bad electric motor, without replacing the entire assembly?

Genesis Ranks No. 2 in J.D. Power 2026 Initial Quality Study https://share.google/bUTZNIGCEB0fwJN2t

The benchmark study reveals widespread success across the entire Genesis lineup, with both luxury SUVs and sedans dominating their respective segments during the critical first 90 days of ownership.

I'm not surprised at all. I'm really happy with the quality of my GV60 after three years and 36,000 miles. It has only had one minor issue that was free to repair. I've owned numerous Lexus Porsche and Mercedes cars amongst other brands, and this one ranks right near the top with those for initial quality. And given that it's an electric car, I expect many fewer repairs in the future. Just as long as the ICCU doesn't give out.

According to posters on FaceBook, a limited number of recalls on the fuel rail issue have been performed. Owners stated that they took their cars in for regular oil changes or other items, and the dealers examined, tightened and/or replaced the leaking connectors. One owner said that Genesis had contracted with SnapOn tools to make a specialized wrench for the techs to use to set the proper torque on the connections. Another stated that his leak was repaired with new parts. There is sufficient traffic in this area to believe that a solution has started to ship. If anyone has more definitive information, please share.
