Is it ok to switch from automatic to manual shift and back while the car is in motion?

Hi, Has anyone tried to remove the auto shift knob or does anyone know how it comes off? I don't care much for the stock knob and would like to replace it. Thanks.

One of the complaints I had about my 2009 was that it short shifted at about 6200 rpm, which is 300 rpm short of 6500 rpm redline, which is also the motor speed for maximum rated horsepower. My 2011 shifts smartly under full throttle at 6500 rpm. Nice.
