  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi Guys and Gals, haven't been on here in some time.
Well last Friday, I took the R Spec out to run some errands. On the way home, I start getting a noise coming from the engine compartment. No warning lights on the dash and she seems to be running fine. So I drive a few more miles to the house and go to look under the hood and see what's going on.

Pop the hood and didn't see anything wrong. I thought maybe the belt was coming apart so I took off the air inlet hoses so I could see the belt. No issues there. So I go and start it back up to see if I can find where the noise is coming from. Motor was a little hard to start but it started. get under the hood and I hear it. Lots of banging going on in the valve train on the drivers side. So I shut it off and call the dealer to see about getting the car in.

I wound up taking her in on Monday on a flat bed. While they are looking over the car, I was wandering the lot, checking out the new genesis once again.

They come back and tell me the motor is shot. Not only the vale train has issues but they could hear a rod knocking a swell. $15K for a new motor. Lucky it's all under warranty.

Well while I was looking at the new Genesis, wound up talking with a salesman and that lead to a test drive. I was impressed with the new Genesis. A completely different car than my '12. Then they come out and hit me with they are clearing out the '15's with Hyundai employee pricing, $15K off the sticker price. So I said what the hell, lets run the numbers and see what comes up.

Bottom line, They are keeping my '12 and I drove home in a new 5.0 in Empire state gray for an extra 12 bucks a month over what I was paying. :) I had originally ben looking for a 5.0 Ultimate in Monticito Blue but they didn't have one. The Gray was my second choice.

Nice trade up. Dark grey looks good on damn near every car. I like it a lot!

48K miles, all stock. Changed the oil every 5K miles.

Man thats a bummer, at least you got to take advantage of the discount, they has a few on the lot with the same discount when I bought my car a few months ago.

I'm sticking to this one, I got the new transmission put in from the dealer when I bought it and they solved the issues that the new 8-speed has in the 2012.

Apparently they said that there is metal shaving ending up in the ATF fluid which causes these to fail, and the same with the motors, if they use the wrong oil filter on the engine they blow up.

Fingers crossed that I dont see that issue.

I wouldn't take the dealer's word for it on the above causes.

The problem with the early 2012 5.0 engine had to do with the piston rings not seating properly. They changed something at the engine factory to fix it on later builds.

I am not sure about the cause of the early 2012 transmission problem, but transmissions (and engines) have filters to trap metal shavings. Anyway, metal shavings are a symptom, not a cause.
