If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. 15000 Mile Service: $465?

I went to get my service done today and did as VivienM and others said to: I told them I only wanted the things in the Hyundai recommended service done. That came out to be just an oil change since I checked the air filter myself and decided it didn't need to be replaced yet.

So, since I get free oil changes for the first four years of ownership, my 15000 mile service cost exactly nothing. They did try to push the $465 version on me a few times during the process but I declined. As long as Morrie's 394 allows me to decline it and doesn't give me problems about the free oil change program, I'll stay with them for my service. This is the first negative experience I've had with them but it ended well.

I did have the right fog light replaced since it burnt out for a cost of ~$40. It is only covered for 1 year and 12000 miles under the warranty.

They say the high price is justified because it includes:

oil change - Should be $23.95
engine and cabin air filter - shouldn't need replacing yet
brake/engine/suspension inspection' - 1 hour of labor
brake service - inspection only!
tire balance - shouldn't be needed
alignment
- shouldn't be needed

Yes, you're getting ripped off.

Mine may've been a ripoff, too, judging from responses, but it was at least less a ripoff at $180. Things included:

Engine Oil & filter change
Lube chassis, hood, doors and trunk
Inspect all lights, accessories, fluid levels (top off if necessary), belts and hoses.
Adjust tire pressures
Check exhaust system for leaks, damage.
Replace engine air filter.
Inspect transmission fluid level & condition
Rotate and computer spin-balance tires. Inspect for wear.
Reset tire-pressure monitoring system.
Check, clean and adjust rear brakes and parking brake [hmmm...why not front too?]
Inspect throttle body assembly for binding oor deposits
Road test.
"Free" wash and vacuum.

Priced by-the-word, $180's not all that bad :-)

Tell your service manager you checked with a national forum where a bunch of people said he's a crook. For me, having an honest service shop for my car is incredibly important. I'm trusting someone to take care of a possession which costs me months of pay. I'd prefer to go to someplace else I trust rather than get the free oil and required maintenance. I'd always wonder if I got ripped off on the price of the required maintenance.

That price is crazy and higher than maintenance of my Lexus.

My concern with this price quote... What happens down the road when you really need service.... Would you trust them to give an honest quote?

I understand they are offering "free" oil changes for 4 years but now every chargeable service is going to raise a red flag (or should)....

My Advice. Get the oil changes done at Morrie's. Any chargeable service... Take to another local dealer (you have options in the twin cities).

If asked why you are taking your car elsewhere for service be honest...
They won't get better if they don't know why they are losing business.

My 15k service was an oil change, everything else was a free inspection.
(Dealer talked me out of replacing the engine air filter)...

On another note: My dealer provides a "total maintenance cost" sheet at every service. The total spent on the car since new. Makes sense given the brand but it is unique in my experience.

That's good advice and what I was thinking of doing as well. Any service that I really need will be done elsewhere or at least cross-referenced with other dealerships. Like you said, there are options in the Twin Cities.

Well, to be redundant and echo everyone else, I just had my 30K service (I purchased 8/02/08), and it cost me $32.95 plus tax....the list of 'checks' was similar to others posted here (didn't include rotate tires--had that done on a previous visit), and the charge was for the oil change. My dealer uses semi-synthetic. FYI, when I bring it in for an oil change by itself, it's also $32.95! No add'l charges for the other inspections. I took it once to a Valvoline shop to change the oil one time, and they were about $55, but could do the change immediately. It was OK otherwise, but just cost $20+ more.

Sounds like your dealer was looking for his Christmas Bonus! I'd give it to him, if I were you...by going to another dealer!

Dan :>)

just tell them what you want done - oil change, tire rotation and cabin air filter. ask for a new quote...

I took my 3.8 2009 Genesis in for 15K service... oil change with filter and tire rotation and the charge was ZIP,NADA,ZERO,NOTHING.... I went to pay and service person said FREE. I was shocked but very happy. Kenny Kent Evansville. Don't know if it was their deal or corporate. I didn't ask, I got "Out of Dodge" before they changed their mind.

I'm coming up on my 15000 mile service and my dealer $465 service.

oil change
engine and cabin air filter
brake/engine/suspension inspection'
brake service
tire balance
alignment

I'm located in central Calif. just had my 15k included all you have listed for $218. This is the same dealership where I purchases my Genesis. $465 much too high-

Ask for a quote for the manufacturer's specified service. It should be no more that $100 or so. If it is, call Hyundai.

Here is the bad part about buying a luxury car from a low end car dealer: they make their money by deceiving their customers. The expect their customers to be unsophisticated and buy off the lot. They expect them require financing and not understand the terms. They expect it to be a very major purchase for the buyer and sell them 'paint protection' and various warranties at 200-500% markups. They expect them to come in and ask for a service without looking at the owner's manual or knowing the difference between the two.

I dealt with 3 GMC dealers when I had my last truck. Two were relatively small. The third was a huge GMC/Pontiac/Buick/Hummer (added after I got my GMC)/Suzuki (added even later) dealer. Dealing with their service department was impossible. Waits, incomplete information, and anything that had to be diagnosed was always priced 2-3x what the other dealers charged.

High end dealers expect repeat business. They may charge a few dollars (but not $465).

Ask for the manufacturer's service. It has a specified length of time it should take, they have a shop labor rate, and parts.

BTW, an oil change with filter to synthetic varies around here (NJ) in the $40-80 range.

I agree with most of what you say but, in my experience over the years at many high-end dealers, it's the same story when it comes to "up=selling" the scheduled maintenance. To try and put lipstick on the pig, at least dealers are giving you something for your money when they sell you an alignment etc and it probably is not that different from most other industries where up-selling is S.O.P.....heck, even McDonalds tries to biggie-size you. Folks have to learn to say no.

Oh really?? Before buying my Genesis I drove an Infiniti QX4 for 10 years and had all of the service done at the Infiniti dealer. They were very polite and always provided a loaner car, but the prices were outrageous. I knew I was in trouble when I got an $800 bill for the standard 15k mile service. It didn't get any better. Replacing brake pads and resurfacing the front rotors cost about $900. But, of course, I did get a free loaner car.

Had my 15k maintenance last month. It consisted of oil change and air filter change and I had the emblem put on the trunk, total cost was no where near $400. I think you need to find another dealer.

I don't know why,but I received a FREE oil/filter and tire rotation at 15K. Last week I went in with a $34.95 post card I had received in the mail for my 20k service. When I checked out the woman said it was FREE!!!

Does anyone have any idea? I live in the Evansville Indiana area. I don't want to mess this up, it is great!!

When I read about these $600+ services my jaw drops. I have a 2009 Genesis sedan 6 cylinder.

Just had my 15k done. $123.00. When I first got there, I asked what the average cost was for the service. Said they hadn't done many Genesis but other models generally run +/- $130. They said they'd work with me to keep the cost down. I think they gave me the air filter for free to get it under $130. So far my maintenance costs for a little over a year of ownership are $160. Awesome.

$89.95 where I work and it includes oil filter, 7 qts of oil, air and cabin filter, rotate, and all of the inspections.
