  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi,
My name is Tyrone. I'm not a genesis owner yet however I am in the process of buying one. Either the 2009 V8 sedan with tech pack or the 2013 V6 with premium package.

I need some help please. Any owners of these could you please tell me issues you have encountered? Would you buy again? How do these hold up to the Acura TL same years. Are these know I g for any ongoing issues ie. Tranny, engine, etc...

Thank you for the advice and much appreciated. Have a great day.

Overall I've been VERY happy with my 2013 v6, for the cost. I really like the styling, the way it drives, and the build quality from a DIY mechanic perspective. I've done quite a bit of work on BMW, GM (LS engines), ford, toyota, etc. And it is really nice how it seems like whoever designed the car did it with repairability in mind. I have also been impressed that they use good quality electrical connectors that don't break, viton rubber gaskets vs paper, just overall it's really clear to me that the engine and car was designed with reliability in mind.

That said, because they are fairly reliable, and not as popular as lexus/bmw/etc, it means there is less info online about problems.

The only real downside/frustration I've had is the direct injection engines do cause intake build-up, but this happens with most DI engines of that era. Also, I live in a large city, but there aren't nearly as many "independent" shops that know hyundais like there are lexus/bmw/benz. There are some who have had transmission issues but it's not widespread, and in my opinion no worse than any other car in the age and price range. Another thing I've seen, for whatever reason a lot of the Genesis' I looked at were VERY poorly maintained compared to Lexus/bmw/etc

Personally, I wouldn't buy any car of this era with a loan. You're better off spending a couple extra bucks a month and getting something newer and under warranty. But that's a side topic. And, like I said, a lot about the car has to be looked at with value in mind. Is a 2013 Genesis built as well as a 2013 GS350? No way. BUT the genesis will be ~$10k and the lexus will be ~$20k. Is the lexus twice as good? I would say not.

We have had our 2013 V-6 Genesis sedan for about three years now and have put over 40,000 miles on it in that time. I was looking for a comfortable road trip car with low operating costs and a bargain purchase price. Bought a 2013 off lease Genesis with 23,000 miles on it for $19,600 plus taxes and with the Hyundai full 10 year/100k mile warranty still valid (bought it as a certified used car from a Hyundai dealer). I'm completely happy with that decision. Maintenance and running costs have been simple and cheap. Very different from my prior experiences as a Volvo owner :). Recently we did 1,650 miles of driving in under two days and it is still an awesome road trip vehicle. Fine for daily driver local use as well. I got a parking ticket once which said it was a Mercedes, which made me chuckle. Luckily I could afford to pay the parking ticket because I'm not paying to maintain a seven year old Mercedes :).

I will definitely keep an eye out for a 2013 can anyone give some input on the 2009 V8. I know that's Hyundai's first v8. Issues that can be expected? Is it a strong engine? I know it's a V8 but is it fuel efficient? Does it matter if I out regular gas over premium? Anything else maybe I should consider.

The v8 isn't particularly fuel efficient, but in my opinion a bigger issue is, the genesis itself isn't exactly a super popular car. The v8s every less so. Personally I would be pretty hesitant to jump on a 10+ year old car of which so few were sold. It's going to make it even more difficult to figure out problems as they come up. Also, the v6 isn't really a slouch. I'm not going around racing people, but it has plenty enough to power to scoot around

I bought a 2013 Rspec a few months ago, around about April. Gas mileage is not the best compared to my older 4 cylinder vehicle, but I'm fine with it. The car itself has been flawless so far, has less than 60K miles, but I immediately changed tranny fluid, engine oil and differential fluid to give it a clean start.
Keep it in drive and it is a good solid car, put it into sport and it becomes a beast. Only time I've put it into sport is to enjoy the response. Drive is more than enough power for normal driving.
Premium fuel gives you 429 HP in the '13, regular gives you about 424 HP, no big difference in power.
The 2009 was a 4.6L that does not appear to have many problems, only thing I've read about was that the early 2012 5.0 had weak piston rings and oil burning and that the early 8 speed trannies were hit and miss.
If you can afford it I would recommend the '13 5.0 or later, all the bugs seems to have been sorted out.
