With all the little mods/features that have been added to both Gennys, about the only thing that I feel I am missing from my R-SPEC is Paddle Shifters!

I have been looking around for an aesthetically pleasing solution to this problem for a while, today I think I found what I am looking for and I thought would share :D;

"Universal Wireless Steering Wheel Mounted F1 Paddle Shifter Kit"

http://www.innovativeignitionsystems.com/#!f1-wireless-paddle-shifters/cdff

The price is not that bad, if one considers what it would cost to do a custom setup, that may not look as a factory installed option.

They claim 1-2 hours install, but I am going to reach out to them to see if I can get an installation manual to try to establish how difficult it would be to install.

I think would make a nice holidays present :cool:...

What do you think?

Why? Seriously though, what's the benefit? These aren't dual clutch trannies, just auto's so not sure what gains are achieved.

Luxury cruiser vs Sport argument notwithstanding, here are few reasons I can think of right out of the bat;

- Choosing for oneself the right gear in that special corner, is certainly a boon for any enthusiastic driver :D.

- Holding a gear longer, without one having to mash the throttle to the floor!

- Downshift for a smoother breaking experience, or perhaps a prompt gateway when the occasion calls for it?

- Compensate for the 250ms-1100ms it takes for the slush-box to down shift when using the Accelerator kick-down.

- Shift promptly, so that one can keep the engine in the ideal power band (5200-6100 RPM in the R-Spec ;))

I know these can all be done using the gear stick in 'Sports' Mode, but I believe it to be safer to keep both hands on the wheel, not to mention significantly more convenient to use a Paddle Shifter to get it done.

In summery the 'gains' would be to have a convenient way to provide a more granular control over that 8 speed transmission, in lue of not being able to reprogram the ECU shift points to something a bit more reasonable and pay homage to the "R"-Spec emblem.

Doesn't "look" hard from the sheet... just looking for a real world write up.

If it works... I would love to have the paddle shift... for the reasons you describe... instead of having to use the auto stick.

Do you really think a cheap add on product will shift quicker than the standard shiftronic transmission that was designed and built for our cars? And can you really tell there is 250ms-1100ms lag time in the transmission shift points? If so then maybe the Genesis is not the car for you. Maybe a Bugati Veyron is more your ride.

My man.... I never said that I am looking for quicker shifts, what I said was this economical mod may provide a more granular control over the current ECU shift points which is considered by some to be lethargic when compared to other models including the 2015 5.0 model.

After driving the 2015 5.0 (in both trims), two things gave me pause, the chassis firmness and the sports mode (with the paddle shifters), both of which can be sufficiency addressed with the rigit collars and this simple mod ($20k of savings included for good measure :D)

As far as 250ms-1100ms I can really tell! why? because I come from a performance oriented background and have been studying the OBDII output, looking for ways to understand our cars performance envelop since NOV/2008 (feel free to check out my other threads)...

While I fully appreciate that the Genesis is not a 550i or an E550 from performance prospective, it is close (perhaps 90% or more, for the cost of my two Gennys ;)),

I feel by discussing all sort of mods, soliciting others feed back and sharing our findings is what this forum is all about...

Just my two cents.

Forgot to mention, technically the 8 speed transmission found in our cars is a Quin-clutch (five) hybrid :D

.

Ok ordered mine last weekend and should be here on Wednesday as it is shipped from Korea.

These guys are super helpful, especially Alex, answered every question I had, he even manged to dig up an install for our Genny (?KDM version?) which should be close enough, I am sharing with anyone that might be interested to determine the level of effort of this mod.:

shifter_1.webp
shifter_2.webp
shifter_3.webp
shifter_4.webp

Hopefully I will get it installed by next weekend and do another update :D.

10yr/100k warranty on my car. I'll pass but curious how you end up.

Same warranty here.

Never the less, out of interest, did we get rid of those wonderful Magnaflow catback and MSA cat deletes for the same reason? ;)

I think if the tranmition acts up for some reason, I would imagine removing this mod before going to the shop would be slightly easier... I am just saying... :D

Nope. Drone was really bothering me. Really ruined the luxury feel for me.
Cat deletes were removed because I failed PA emissions with them. They are really strict and the inspector knew I was missing the secondary cats. :(
Going with Dynomax VTs as soon as I can get around to welding them on.

I am interested to see how this works out for you. Keep me posted.

I would consider something like this if the transmission in this vehicle was able to shift a bit quicker in manual mode.

The Shiftronic mode is so slow to respond to input I don't see any benefit to shifting manually, whether that be via the stock method or by mounting a paddle shifter setup.

Once you've driven a manual or automated manual you realize how inept this transmission is for performance oriented driving. Leaving it in normal "drive", in fact, is better if you're driving aggressively. The transmission seems to respond quicker to modulation of the gas pedal (especially with a SprintBooster -shameless plug ;)) as opposed to manual shifts.

Using a combination of OBDII readings and observation, here is what I found so far ;

1 - If one presses accelerator but does not activate the kick down, the manual shift is quicker in both ZF and the 8 Speed, which can be a side effect of the kick down over riding the manual shift!

- Example: if floored with kick down, then one changes up at 3000 RPM on to next gear, the transmission automatically will kick down after some level of hesitation!!!

2 - 8 Speed shifts quicker than ZF by as much as 300ms under certain conditions, but on average it is around 200ms quicker!

- Average auto gear change in normal driving is around 650ms in the ZF and 450ms in the 8 Speed.

The ideal shift points are:

4.6 ZF = 6100RPM
5.0 8sp = 6200RPM

Average kick down shift point:

--------AMBNT-----ENGINE
MODEL_TEMP__ COLD__WARM
4.6 ZF_<65F __ 6500__6300
4.6 ZF_>65F __ 6400__6200
5.0 8__<65F___6700__6400
5.0 8__>65F___6500__6300

All RPM numbers are rounded, ZF=2009-2011, 8=2012-2014.

(It is nice to be able to study both specimens at the same time :D)

Now to the install UPDATE: The shop could not fit the shifter for me, due to the angle of the sheering wheel as well as the shifter can not be placed on top of the hole for screws that holds the air bag / steering wheel cover, which happens to be the ideal placement for the shifter. :(

So I would need some sort of small mounting mod, that;

a- Corrects the angle.
b- Solves the placement issue...

Therefore, some more engineering time required to solve the current challenge...:rolleyes:

Once I get beyond the current challenge, I am thinking of adding a relay that is hooked to the 'modified sport' mode, which disables the kick down once the system is put in the new 'manumatic'/sports mode.

Yes, I have spend some (hard to come by) free time studying the subject just for fun :cool:.. But at times like these, I miss the good old days, when things used to be a tad simpler....

I love the research and breakdowns - keep it coming.

Just to make sure I understand your first point, are you saying that a manually initiated gear change (using Shiftronic) completes more quickly than a shift initiated by pushing the pedal down further in automatic?

If so, would it follow that shifting yourself during a WOT run (at a drag strip, for instance) would produce better times? It seems like every time I try to shift myself I end getting foiled by the computer with the dreaded "double shift". Shifting sooner would prevent that I guess but it's harder than it seems.

Indeed, If the kick down is activated (pressing the accelerator all the way down with kick switch engaged) and you try to shift manually it is slower, I do not know if the ECU gets confused or simply the kick down switch over rides the manual shift!

At this point all I know it seems that the manual shift completes in faster times, if the kick down is not engaged.

What we do know is the ideal shift point for both the 4.6 (6100RPM) and 5.0 (6200RPM), so the trick becomes at the drag strip is to go to in manual mode, when the light turns green. press the accelerator all the way but before engaging the kick down, and change the gears at the specified RPM, this should in theory gives you the best 0-60 1/4 mile run..

I am going to shamlessly bump this to see if there was any outcome. Thanks

Finally found a shop that maybe is willing to work on it, as I have not had the time to work on it myself, way too many projects ;)..
