  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

guys if you had to choose, would you get a 2009 4.6 fully loaded, or a 2012 3.8 with tech pack?

i will have to pay a bit more to switch to a 2012 3.8, but trying to decide if its worth the trade.

I really want the r-spec but for now its not an option.

I would say go for the 2012 honestly, or wait for the 2013 to come out this year depending on how long of a wait you can do.

The speed of the 2012 3.8 is sufficient enough and I never had a problem with speed that's for sure.

unfortunately i can't wait that long, i just bought my 2009 4.6, and have only 30 days or 2000km to exchange for another vehicle.

Im really liking the tail/headlights on the new body but can't decide if its worth the extra money and worth getting a v6 over the current v8 i have

In the 2012, it felt more better of a ride then the 2009-2011 (to me)

It upgraded some nice things such as the ugly wood on the doors, the ugly chrome handles on the inside, etc. The overall look in my opinion is worth the extra money lol.

Also you will have the smart cruise control, auto hold (which allows you to push it at stop lights etc instead of having to hold the brake), a button for the emergency brake instead of the ugly emergency brake pedal, I'm sure there are a few more things.

They don't have THAT much difference...small ones but better i suppose on the 2012....but really...is up to you. If my budget was tight...then i would go with the 2009 and do some small upgrades for the exterior later on...it all depends on the budget....make a smart purchase :) I had bunch of friends ( koreans ) who would purchase benz...beemers...audis...and once they started getting the bill for maintenance most of them returned the car....so don't do anything like that! lol

Confused. You wanna keep the car you have or go for a less powerful more efficient car? Stick with what you have, it's paid for and there aren't enough differences in the cars to pay a premium. Wait till the next one comes out, then go for that. For me the V8 is such a sweet powerplant, and mated to the ZF gear box, it's the best part of the car, the silky smooth drivetrain.

Why the V-6 is slightly less powerful it is quicker and more efficient, 2 very good things in my book. I know so many people on here love their V-8's and how everything smells better, feels richer, and cradles your ass nicer in the V-8. Well truth be told the direct-injected V-6 is doing everything the 4.6 V-8 is doing its just lighter and more efficient doing it. In all honesty both are very nice cars, I prefer new but thats not always the wisest financial decision.

Where are you getting those numbers?

I believe the old v8 number are 5.5 0-60, 1/4 mile 14.0

I was thinking the same thing. MotorTrend clocked the 2009 4.6 at 5.3 to 60 and Car and Driver 5.5 to 60.

MotorTrend took the Genesis back to the track after having journalists beat on it for 100,000 miles and it put down the same track times as it did new.

what would be missing if i went with a 2012 3.8/tech over the 2009 4.6? so far i read i would be missing the lighted door sills and the premium leather, anything else?

A slightly larger gas bill and bigger brakes. There's not enough difference in the two cars to justify paying more for it. You're better served waiting a year to get the next version which will be out next year:
New Hyundai Genesis Sedan Coming in 2013

good point, i do like the 2009 bodystyle. I should wait for the '13 and trade in then.

Not sure about Canada, but I thought the 2012 tech package comes with premium leather, regardless of engine.

Looks like the V8 may not be available in next generation Genesis (MY 2014) unless you get R-Spec (this is same as rumored for 2013 Genesis).

Yes because it more than likely the new version is going to address all the shortcomings of the current BH.
1. no ventilation for the passenger seat & better adjustibility
3. adjustable suspension, or at least better ride quality
4. more steering feel
5. better tires
6. non descriptive styling
7. Plood
8. better Ipod and smart phone connectivity
9. Defeatable ESC
10. Power Folding mirrors
11. Fancier Gauges/ Instrument Cluster
12. Auto headrest and more side bolstering for seats

So is the difference worth $20k for a new 4.6 versus an '09 or '10 model?

So to be clear, since I am lurking here gathering info, the V-8 we know has more hp, and it seems it is a bit quicker. Also the shifting is smoother from what most people have said on here. Plus the V-8 comes with all the bells and whistles standard, whereas the V-6 has the tech package to have the same type of stuff.

I only chimed in because I am looking to get a pre-owned Genesis this fall (hopefully in October), and if I shop around I can get a great 4.6 for about the same price as the 3.8. I understand each year they make things a bit better and add a few more features. My budget is about $28k all in, so a new Genesis, regardless of the model or trim, is out of the question.

I know the 3.8 gets better mpg, but we are talking an extra gallon or two tops every time I fill up...meaning the range is only 30-60 miles more per tank in the 3.8 than the 4.6.

Do I have the right idea?

not sure about 2012, but i hate on mine that i have to hold down the button to close the sunroof tilt. Opening is auto, but closing is you have to hold, weird. I wish it was like my old car where if the sunroof was tilted and i want to open all the way, i just have to push open once, and it will close tilt and open all the way automatically..

If this is a big gripe you have about the car, you are living a charmed life.

Why don't you wait for the 2013...and test drive it....if you still don't like the 2013 you can keep the current car...if you love the 2013 then you can trade then! win win situation :)
