  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2009 3.8 and have noticed a couple of things. One is that road noise is getting louder, but I'm going to attribute that to the OEM tires that I'm still using, so I am getting a lot of road noise through the tires. A couple things have me concerned though. I'm not a car guy, so bear with me on these descriptions.

First is that I've noticed from time to time that I'll hear a "clunk" when reversing while turning. It'll sometimes feel like I've run over a rock. When making a slow turn while going over a speed bump, it felt almost like the tires slipped off the speed bump. Could this be a wheel bearing issue?

My other issue is that I'm hearing a kind of low whine when going at low speeds. I can hear the change in the whine even while coasting, but the whine does seem to change pitch when the transmission shifts.

It's going to be a couple of weeks before I can take the car in for service, but I'd like to know how to sound smarter with the service rep rather than talking in terms of "clunks" and "whine". Thanks!

I too have a 2009 Genesis sedan. If you still have the OEM tires on the car, you have my condolences. They are the proximate cause of a number of noise, handling, and other related issues with the car. I ditched mine (the tires) with less than 20k miles on them because they were just so bad in wet weather. BTW, you didn't mention how many miles you have on your car. I have 33K on mine.

As to the other noises, I've not heard them on my Genesis and so I think they warrant some dealership attention. While I have been meticulous in maintaining my car to factory specs and have had all scheduled maintenance done at the dealership. The transmission does have few quirks that appear if you change driving styles or habits, but other than that, nothing you are describing rings any bells for me. Just tell your dealer what you have been hearing and let them do some diagnostics.

The clunk going in reverse could be the parking brake. There is a TSB on that.

I had a whine sound develop in my 2004 Acura, thought it was transmission but it turned out to be cat. converter had to be replaced. go figure.

I have about 24,500 miles on my car. Tires are wearing down, so they're due for a change soon. I've been reading the various threads on the "best" tires and I'll be comparing those lists to my local Costco and Sam's Club. My biggest worry is that my battery is also OEM and apparently the only reliable place to find a replacement is at the dealership.

Thanks for the heads up on the TSB. Is there a link to the TSB site?
