  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm looking at a 2009 CPO with 41K on the clock. With all the talk about 2009's with bad suspensions, what should I look for or should I pass on the 2009 models and focus on a 2010?

What are they asking?

Test drive it on a bumby road (doesn't have to be high speed). Personally, I would wait for a 2010, but up to you.

I agree might want to look for a newer one... quite a few tweaks/fixes.
If your financing newer ones would have a lower interest rate.

FYI, I have a 2009 and spent $1650 parts and labor to upgrade suspension to 2010/2011 specs.

If you do get a 2009, you can upgrade just the rear stabilizer (about $200 parts and labor) using the 2012 part, and probably get noticeable improvement. There is a thread on this.

Check the MFR date on the door sticker. Dates >= April 2009 will have the mid year suspension update.

Mark_888, is the ride that bad?

Gunkk, I'll look at the door sticker. So anything from April onward It should have the revised suspension?

I'll be honest I drove a 2009 Tech Package, and honestly I did not notice anything. Now the roads here in South Florida (I'm in Miami) for the better part are just about perfect, very smooth. I'll be paying close attention to the suspension.

Yes, based on several hours of research mostly on this forum in the suspension section, 2009's with a build date after April 8, 2009 have the modified rear suspension.

My 09 Tech 4.6 is a March build, and it's got a bouncy booty. I live in FL also, and only notice the harshness if I take a speed bump too fast (rare), or as porpoising on certain bridges/causeways with pre-stressed concrete panels that are domed. But I neither live near them nor drive on them regularly, so no it's biggie for me.

Some clarification is needed. Here are the various suspension versions:

  • Early 2009 up until April 2009 build date. -There is an exact date posted somewhere in this forum)
  • 2009 Minor revision for build date after April 2009 (date and exact revisions somewhere in this forum)
  • 2010/2011 - changed all four shocks/struts, all four springs, and rear stabilizer (may depend on whether V8 or V6, since some parts are slightly different due to extra 200 lbs on front end of V8)
  • 2012 - Probably changed all four shocks/struts, all four springs, and rear stabilizer

See my post above for "revised suspension" versions.

You will only notice the problem on rough roads, and mostly at slow to moderate speeds. Also may notice when the road appears to be smooth, but is a bit wavy, such as when construction vehicles put indentations into a road before it has cured.

If I were you, I'd look for a preowned Genesis outside the Miami area. Its no secret the majority of drivers down there drive their cars as if they were in the Daytona 500. The chances of finding a nice, not abused to crap V8 Genesis in Miami is fairly slim. Just my opinion ofcourse.

Im not saying not to buy it in Miami. All I'm saying is be 100% sure the car is sound. I would ask the dealer to have the service tech do a diagnostics of the powertrain and to show me the results. Even if they insist it was done, and they certified it, I wasnt there to personally see it. I know it sounds picky and analytical but you are going to be paying for the car.

Just be mindful of the car you are buying and pay attention that the dealer is not tryng to lap you with a problematic car. Miami dealers can be shady.

LOL, yeah, I took that approach with my previous used 2006 Subaru STi, and wound up paying for a nightmare for 5 years. My penance for not doing my DD, believing I could work out the bugs. All I did was hemorrage money. Never again.

Nothing wrong with helping someone purchasing a used car.

A lot of us who purchased the early 2009 Genesis took a test drive in the area around the dealer, and the roads were smooth, but we got a rude shock when we found out that car was very bouncy when roads were not so smooth or not so flat. It was very unusual because I prefer a firm ride and never even imagined that a car like the Genesis would have a suspension issue.

I upgraded my early 2009 suspension to 2010/2011 specs, and it is now acceptable, but not perfect. New tires also helped.

I agree Mark. The 09 I had was a bit floaty for me. The R Spec on the other hand is much much better. Love the handling on that car.

Don't discount this comment.

I recently replaced a set of worn out Dunlop SP sport signatures. The signatures better than the original OEM Dunlops, but firm, low rolling resistance, lots of tire pull, feel-every-little-bump-in-the-road, moderate noise.

I put on a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports. The difference in ride was huge. It smoothed the handling and feel of the car tremendously. Gave up ~1 mpg in rolling resistnace in town, but well worth the ~$200 difference in purchase price vs. alternate lesser quality tires. $70 michelin rebate broght the cost to the same as the rest of the upper tier of tiers (pole positions, pzero neros, conti DWs etc.) so the choice was easy :D
