  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have Genesis 2009 3.8 Sedan and was happy with the performance until now. Recently my brake & tail light stop working. There was no notification on the dashboard to show that the light are not working. I did not know this until one driver behind my car stop me and told me about the failure. So I took my car to the dealer to fix it.

The dealer told me that this light is LED light and need to replace the whole LED unit (driver and passenger side). There is no way to just replace the bulb. See attached picture of the part that dealer told me to replace. The dealer quoted more then $1000 to replace these two LED units. This is rediculous design from Hyundai on the high end car. I have more then 100K miles on the car so it is not under warranty.

Since this is a safety and legal issue to drive the car without the brake light. I don't have any other option but to fix this. I am not sure if this is known issue with other Hyundai car or most recent Genesis sedan and anyone else have similar kind of issue. I searched the forum and could not find this type of issue. Any help on this issue is really appriciated.

I would try another dealer. Dealer techs are often not very knowledgeable about how to fix stuff without replacing everything.

Also, did the brake light AND tail lights go out? In other words, the brake light only is supposed to work when your foot is on the brake pedal, and tail light is on when headlights are on. If both are not working, then I suspect there is something that can be replaced without replacing the whole thing, but not sure.

Make sure the dealer has applied all outstanding recalls to your car (there were some relating to brake lights). You can go to www.myhyundai.com to find out (free registration may be required).

Yes, both the brake and tail light go out. The dealer confirmed that all the recalls is applied. I will take the car to another dealer. Lets see how much they quote. Thanks for your reply.

If none of the brake lights are working, I would suspect that the brake lamp switch is bad. Somewhat of a common issue on these cars.
