  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 - Long-Term Road Test Update

From the article: "The Genesis is a smart luxury buy, particularly at a time when conspicuous consumption is out. But we’re still not sure how many people will think of Hyundai as a luxury brand in the future, in the way that they do with Lexus right now."

Lexus became a credible luxury brand by building credible competitors to the German brands. The first Lexus LS was featured in a number of comparisons with the BMW 5 series and Mercedes E class and acquitted itself well. I have yet to see a comparison test that pits the Genesis against such cars.

That may change with the Equus. Since it is aimed directly at the Lexus LS460, it will certainly be compared to that car and probably the Germans as well. If it does well, it may give Hyundai the confidence to move upmarket - it doesn't have that far to go - and finally take on the luxury cars. If Hyundai wants the Genesis to be compared to the luxury brands it will have to make it as good as them. Brand identification would still be a problem, of course, but losing the "almost as good as" label would be a good start.

The Genesis just beat the ES350 in the latest Car and Driver issue, but it would still need to be compared to a GS and an LS since it can compete with them as well in different ways. I think the mags won't do those comparos though, they'll just wait for the Equus.

Edmunds compared the Genesis to the GS and while the Genesis hasn't appeared in direct comparisons, most reviews of the Genesis have mentioned the Germans and Lexus (a bit sad that no one ever seems to mention Infiniti).

The problem is that the LS400 was an F segment sedan (S Class, 7 Series) and not an E segment sedan (E Class and 5 Series).

While the LS400 did hold its own against the S Class and 7 Series (aside from not having the driving dynamics of the 7), keep in mind that much of the praise for the LS400 was for its ridiculously low initial MSRP.

As one who bought an LS400 back in 1990, I remember the way Lexus (and Acura and Infiniti) revolutionized the dealer experience which was also an important reason for buying.

I have the Bluetooth issue where the radio blacks out and has to be rebooted - and it's happening more frequently. Was there ever a fix for this? Should I have the head unit completely replaced?

Most of the comments don't give the Genesis what it deserves. I can understand though. People aren't ready to say "Hyundai" and "Lexus" in the same sentence. All of us Genesis owners are ahead of the curve.

I totally agree with you. I think if Hyundai plays its cards correctly it will surpass Lexus in many ways it has a potential to do to Lexus what Lexus did to Mercedes in past. (serious Competition)
