I know this is a frustrating issue! I spoke with the manufacturer of the navi system for the 2009 genesis, Harmon Becker. The USA branches only handle audio for the vehicle. Navi is handled abroad from the parent company. No help.

I contacted MapNSoft yet another time. I was informed that the update IS AVAILABLE, however Hyundai has not authorized its release. The person I spoke with mentioned that Hyundai has not paid the requisite royalty fees as yet, therefore no release. I find that hard to believe, but obviously, something is wrong.

MapNSoft now says...once more..... that the update to the consumer, will be available by the end of February. How many months have we heard that in the past! End of November, end of December, end of January.....VERY, VERY frustrating!

I also then spoke with Genesis support and asked if they could escalate the information I was given regarding non-payment of royalties. Let's see what happens next.:confused:

I don't know the software company that supplies GM, but they released their update this past week. A friend drives an '09 Suburban, and before the update his navi showed him driving on the same "farm" as my Gen: an extension of I-355 that was completed in late '07! His update now places him on the highway, I'm still driving in mud.
Sigh.

Mapnsoft's website has been updated, and it even now lists the Nav update for the Genesis! It's $219, but interestingly shows as 'not in stock'. Hey, it's a good sign!

I received a navigation update to my 2010 Genesis with Technology Package a week ago. Map data is 08/2009 and version is 3.0.

My dealer performed the installation and obtained the map updates which came on 3 DVDs.

"Yes, Virginia....there is a NAV update for the Genny."

I just got off the phone with Matt Fluchel at Dave Mungenast Hyundai in St. Louis. He's the Service Manager at the dealership, not the parts guy.

He did indeed do a NAV update this month on smhirsch's Genny 4.6L w/tech package, and he's got the 3-CD set to do it (matter of fact he's got 2 sets of the CD's). He said the CD's do not have a part number on them, but he's going to check with his regional rep on Monday to see if he can get one. He couldn't understand why other Service Mangers couldn't track this down.

The update CD's only work on Genny's with the tech package (i.e., joystick control on the center consol). It also does take about 3 hours for the update. He said the first time he did it on smhirsh's Genny, the first 2 CD's worked fine, but the third one failed, and he had to start over (so it was actually about a 6 hour event).

Matt said he' e-mail back what he finds out to me next week. I'll keep you posted on what I learn. Keep you fingers crossed!!

Go get 'em, Mike!

Hi Mike;
Are we talking about an update for the 2010 Genny Tech or the 2009?
I was under the impression that the 2010 has a touch screen-very diiferent from the 2009.
I sent an email to the President of Hyundai USA and got a call from his assistant.
No new news other than I would be personally notified when the update is released.

I'll answer on Mike's behalf since I've had the update performed on my 2010 model, but it's also for the 2009 with Technology package, since they both share the same head unit.

This is NOT for the touch-screen model, as far as I'm aware...

Did it cost any $$ for the update?

Check my post at http://www.genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showpost.php?p=41999&postcount=127 (and the attached TSB). The update exists, but it's a "campaign TSB"....for dealer stock cars only. If you don't meet the criteria in the TSB, you might still be able to sweet talk your service manager into doint the update. If you want to drive to St. Louis, Matt told me on the phone he'd personally update my car (too far to drive from So. MD to St. Louis!!)

No, but bear in mind that I had only taken my delivery less than a week prior to the update arriving and I made VERY sure that my dealer knew I expected more recent map data than 2008 on a 2010 vehicle at that time...

Your situation may vary, of course. I'm not sure if the update is part of a TSB or whether it is considered something completely voluntary, however, the Labor line on my service ticket did read TSB 09-01-038-1 so there may be hope for a freebie.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
The TSB I attached to the other post has the date of manufacture/VIN range that it applies to. If you are in that range and your Genny doesn't have the update, I'm pretty sure you can get it gratis. The rest of us will be hoping to sweet talk our service managers.

What were (are) they thinking. Why can't they keep it simple.

OK, I managed to get a copy of the Hyundai Technical Service Bulletin CAMPAIGN;
09-01-038-1. Page 1 states that the update is for dealer stock vehicles only. Also, "DEALERS MUST PERFORM THIS CAMPAIGN ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES PRIOR TO CUSTOMER RETAIL DELIVERY. ACCESS HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA'S 'WARRANTY VEHICLE INFORMATION' SCREEN VIA WEBDCS TO IDENTIFY OPEN CAMPAIGNS."
To me, this shows that this is a no cost upgrade to the cars listed below.

It goes on to say that the applicable vehicles are the 2010 Genesis sedan w/DIS Navigation System, vehicle production range from July 17, 2009 to November 18, 2009. To me, this "implies" that cars made after November 18, 2009 already have the updated map in their hard drive.

Next it shows photos of the three discs used, all labled NAVTEQ on Board. Then it goes on to show the exact procedure to do the update, including how to get the "Map Authentication Code" from the call-center or call-center website. When getting the code, you have to enter the dealer code "if you are a dealer". To me, this implies that non-dealers can also buy the three discs.

The instructions last for 17 pages. 17 PAGES! Just to read and re-read the instructions to make sure I understand them took me 20 minutes, or so. Can't you just see a Service Technician taking his sweet time to read and UNDERSTAND these instructions. It says the Disc 1 takes about 50 minutes to download the map DB. Disc 2 also takes 50 minutes. Disc 3 takes about 80 minutes.

At the very end, under Warranty Information, for the Navigation Map Update, it shows an OP Time of 1.5 M/H. I guess this is the time the Tech can charge, because once any disc starts, the tech is to watch it for 3 minutes, then return after 20 minutes and watch again for 3 minutes. Meanwhile, the tech can be doing other things I guess. Lastly, it tells the tech to "Submit claim on Campaign Entry Screen". I guess this is for the dealer and tech to get paid by Hyundai.

1. I see no reason why this can't be used on the 2009 Genesis Tech Pkgs, with us owners paying for it. Afterall, with the DVD systems out there, including the Non-Tech 2010, you still have to pay for a DVD to update the touch screen GPS Navi, so I have no problem paying to get the Tech Pkg Hard Drive update.

This update campaign is so complicated, I don't know if I want mine done until I see if others had problems with the update.

Like I said at the begining of this post, Why did they make it so complicated when they could have made it a simple system. WHAT WERE (ARE) THEY THINKING?

K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid)!

I physically went to my dealer. My 2009 was manufactured in February of 2009, and I took delivery in May 2009. He said the current update will not work for my model! He went to the Genesis site on his computer and inserted my VIN number. NO campaigns. I watched the process. He said to install the new update might screw up the entire system. I then called MapNSoft. I described the problem and they stated they hope to have an update within the next few weeks for us "older" Genesis owners. (How many times have we heard that). Something is wrong here.

Apparently my 2009 has the latest "software", but not the latest "map".

We all need to pursue this.

So what version is the older '09s Nav S/W?
Is the release date older than '08?

I did notice some lack of street information when I was in a fairly new subdivision.

Dan

Hi Guys;
Hold on to your hats- the latest info is not good.
After registering a number of complaints via email regarding the NAV update fiasco to HM USA, I have been contacted via phone by a member of the staff of the Pres (John Krafcik), and told the following:
1. The next map update for ANY year Genesis will not be available until the fourth quarter of this year AT THE EARLIEST.
2. The map data in the 3 disc TSB for the 2010's is newer info than in the current 2009 database.
3. No explanation of why this map update data is not available for the 2009's.
4. The 3 disc TSB exists to primarily fix software issues in the Tech package for the 2010's. I was told this issues do not exist in the 2009's.

If you want a direct response, I suggest you email the Pres at jkrafcik@hmausa.com with your comments and concerns on this issue.

Hi Guys;
After some reflection, I am beginning to get a grasp on what I think the real problem with the map upgrade is.
First of all, the players:
A. Hyundai Motor- parent company
B. Hyundai USA- USA operations -responsible for USA oriented upgrades
C. Map&Soft- integrates map data into Tech Pkg. software
D. NavTeq- provides basic map data and changes
E. Unknown Software company- provides Tech Pkg software and integration
F. Harmon Kardon-provides Tech Pkg. hardware

The Genny Tech Pkg is much more than just a Nav system- it contains integrated software that controls a bunch of functions. The more comples- the more prone to bugs and requirement for fixes.

C.'s revenue stream is based on selling map upgrades for all Hyundai and Kia Nav systems. I have been told that the latest map upgrade data for the Genesis was requested and provided to Hyundai in the fall of 2009. This info was incorporated into the TSB along with software fixes (for the 2010's only??) and provided at NO CHARGE to the 2010 owners. Since this was for new vehicles, Map&Soft did not receive any sales revenue for this data-probably got a development fee only.
Now, how do they handle the 2009's? The same software fixes are probably required but to allow the TSB to apply to the 2009's would eliminate the upgrade revenue stream for Map&Soft, as many 2009 owners would view the TSB as a warranty issue. I have been told that the map upgrade, whenever issued, will require a visit to the dealer and require about 3 hours to install- sound familiar??
In retrospect, I believe that Hyundai has not come up with a distribution method for the map upgrade alone that can be done easily by the owner and this threatens Map&Soft revenue base- hence the current dilemma and mounting frustration among Genny owners.

I don't see why the map database can't be CONSTANTLY available, so that you could go to their website and download the most current version anytime you wanted. For $40-$50 you could do a one-time update or maybe pay more for several updates within a year.

I guess maybe they get a lot more money selling the information to the OEM than to the end user, but the system is obviously broken and I am very unhappy with the map update situation altogether.

I don't expect that I would pay $200 for an update even if it was available, but I would have paid $50 several times by now if the dataset was being updated regularly. <sigh>

Yea but the corporate mind "thinks" they are smarter than everyone else. Believe me I spent several years working one step between me and the CEO of a very large large corp. Remember!!! When you don't know what yo don't know two things are true. 1. You don't know what questions to ask and 2. You tend to believe what you do think is right.
