  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'd appreciate any help I can get.

I own a 2012 Sedan 4.6 with 40K (bought it a year ago with 30K, still with original tires! This car was babied!) I also own a 2011 4.6 that I've had for 5 years. It has a 180 K.

Problem? Someone ran a red light and smashed the back end of the 2012. They were going about 60 and the car has been determined to be a total loss. The damage is strictly to the body, not even the lights were affected, I was able to drive it home without a problem.

Because the car was in pristine condition inside and out, and the insurance didn't seem to evaluate it too fairly, I had thought about keeping it and paying to get the body repaired but have decided that's probably not the way to go.

The Question: I'm considering retaining the vehicle and receiving the damage amount from insurance, and using the the car for parts for the 2011.

There are a few things I know I can use right now for the 2011 and others I'm not sure of. I had just put brand new tires on, under 1K miles on them, (and the rims are much nicer than the older ones). I'll need tires in about 6 months. I need several of the door speakers, my A/C clutch/compressor seems to be going and will need to be replaced, back up camera doesn't always work and the smart cruise control randomly cuts off sometimes. The SCC can be very expensive and I probably wouldn't fix it if I didn'thave the part. I've also considered pulling those newer seats out and switching out the headlights and taillights as well, if they're interchangeable. Obviously, some of these things are more important than others, but all would be nice if the parts are interchangeable. (Not to mention other parts I might find myself in need of as the car is approaching 200K.)

I'm not sure if the value of these warrants taking the smaller check from the insurance (I have not sought to negotiate this yet, but I think the difference could be somewhere around $3K to $3.5K.)

The big question is could the 40K mile 2012 engine and/or transmission be put in the 2011 if needed? Would the expense be worth it? Otherwise, would that be something that could reasonably be sold at a good price?

As I said, tires (rims), speakers, and AC compressor are known expenses coming due very soon. Other things are preferences and/or anticipated needs and expenses.

Any advice is appreciated, expert or otherwise, as I try to make the best financial decision and make the best use of this vehicle.

If it was me and I didn't need the extra cash for the total loss I would keep the car for parts. I am pretty sure the engine and trans would swap. Just the items you mentioned you needed would close to cover the lessened amount of money from the insurance company. This is not expert advice. Also you must remember about the wife complaining about the crashed car in the driveway.

Someone with more experience/knowledge than me can hopefully chime in here, but I think (for the V-8 powered Genesis, at least) in 2012 Hyundai switched from a 6-speed transmission to an 8-speed. If that's the case, then the motor may swap over pretty easily, but swapping the transmission would be a real challenge, because you'd have to also migrate all the necessary control module(s) and wiring harness(es) from one car to the other.

If I were you, I'd probably just try to sell the engine and transmission out of the wrecked car, *if* that is actually correct. Like I said, hopefully someone else with more knowledge than me will lend some more info to this thread.

You can probably get $250 per working TPMS sensor these days too.

Wow, seriously?? Is that because of short supplies?

Yeah. Discontinued. .

Are there aftermarket options? Or do people just have to deal with their TPMS light being on all the time?

I just ignore it. I have two sets of wheels - for summer and for winter - so I am not buying 8 new sensors.

And you can put small piece of black electrical tape over that light if it bothers you.
