  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2011 3.8 Genesis sedan cold start "DEATH RATTLE"

Did not want to confuse, if the ATS engine cleaner would
work on the timing chain striking the housing, So I used
5W20 Mobile 1, synthetic. Same oil I've used every oil change.
Filter looked good to me. Whatever Fast Lube uses.
They claim is High quality Filter.

Are using a OEM Hyundai oil filter?

The one Fast Lube supplied, with the $93.00
oil change.
Me personally I would get it changed out to the OEM filter. I am not sure how this style works but on some of previous cars if I used one that was inferior is design the motor seemed to noisier during operation.

That is an Excellent idea. Since the filter is on top of
engine, I can do it myself. Without paying $93 for
new oil.

I will try heavier weight oil next change.

This faulty timing chain tension device,
seems common on early 2011 3,8

Saw several owners[on this site] with same
problem, with high mileage. Car still on road,
with No fix. Maybe Kilmer was right. That, not
a serious problem.

I have a 2009 4.6 engine had that tapping sound when you first start the car. I tried different filters and finally the tapping stop when I use K&N filter. I would not use a heavier oil since it will be harder to push up the oil, I use Mobil 1 5W-30.

Thank you. Did not think it would help anyway.
But looking for a simple fix. This 3.8 uses 5W20.

Try the filter first. You can change the oil after if it does not correct the problem without changing the filter. Let me know the outcome.

Could you confirm if the tapping, was valve clatter, or
this timing chain slapping against the housing. It is
very distinctive sound.

I think it was the lifter not the timing chain. I could notice it coming out of the garage before.

The injectors on my Saab are so loud you can mistake it for lifter noise. Hydraulic lifters usually only make noise if they have collapsed.

Kilmer is a talk show host. Take what he says with a grain of salt.

Keep us posted on if the filter changes anything.

If the lifter do not get oil when you first start especially in the back it will make a tapping noise. I have adjusted Hydraulic lifters not solid lifter that your talking about. I know the difference between fuel injector and lifter noise. We are not taking about fuel injector noise that do not go away after a few minutes stick with the issue. I have corrected my tapping noise with using K&N filter even more than weeks not starting the car.

Personally I would use the stock OEM Hyundai oil filter.

Take care.
