  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

White pearl paint gets yellow spots, then bubbles, and finally falls off leaving raw white plastic exposed. This began on the rear bumper area, then the side rub strips, and now on the whole front end bumper, grill surround, and also the four door openings which are metal. The dealer, Harbor Hyundai, and their service advisor, Scott Jones say, "three year coverage on paint, SORRY!!!!" Brand loyalty not encouraged here!! I have written to hyundai corporate, waiting for response. Most of the paint looks new, except for the plastic pieces. $38000.00 car, paint peeling off in 5 years.....Quality....WHAT QUALITY????

Even though the written warranty might only be 3 years on the paint, implied warranties on paint are longer than that. In other words, consumers should expect paint not to peel off after only 5 years. The fact that the rest of the paint is good indicates something is wrong with the plastic painted parts.

It is a bit of a long shot, but if it really bothers you get an estimate from a body shop on repainting those parts and then ask Hyundai for reimbursement. If they refuse you can sue in small claims, since you are in CA and Hyundai USA is too you have a decent chance of a favorable judgement. CA laws are very consumer friendly and the limit in small claims is a generous 10K

Thank you for the advice...the body shop that the dealer recommends estimated $2700.00 to fix plastic painted parts....they won't paint the existing parts, will order all new plastic, and paint it off the car, and then install...I am disappointed, to say the least..

IMHO it sounds to me like the body shop is angling to bilk the insurance company for big $$.
Plastic parts are not that hard to prep and paint, I would get some more ideas/quotes from other body shops.

I don't recall seeing a post on this forum by anyone else who had the same problem as described. So I kind of doubt it is a manufacturing defect.

I don't know what would cause the problem, but was cuprous as to what kind of car washes, waxes, and other chemicals have been applied to the car over the years. Also, was car parked out doors almost all of the time?

Car is parked in covered carport, water and zip car wash by turtle wax used...mcguires car wax, no chemicals. A friend of mine has a Kia Soul, and his paint is doing the same...both vehicles 2011's...and both with paint sloughing off plastic body parts..we live approx. 4 miles from Pacific Ocean

You don't need new plastic. Get it preped repainted and clear coated. Go to a few places and get some estimates. $2700 means they don't really want to mess with it.

Are you the original owner?? When bumpers are damaged, a flexing chemical has to be added to the paint to keep the sort of problem you're having from occurring.

I am the original owner....It began on the rear bumper, just above the tailpipes, I thought it was residue from the exhaust...so I used my McGuires wax to remove the yellow spots....surprise, surprise!!...the paint came off, and I was looking at the white plastic that was under the paint.

I think the plastic bumpers and rocker panels are actually black under all the paint. It may be the parts where repainted and the white showing is the original paint. How many miles were on your car when you purchased it from dealer?

Go to the dealers lot and park out in the street if possible. Take pictures of the paint problems, trying to get a picture of the dealership sign and/or the building in one of the pictures. Then pull into the lot and park where everyone that goes in or out will see it. Then go in and ask the manager if they would help with this problem. If they say no then just walk out, saying nothing.
Send the pictures and a note with all the details of the car and your information to Hyundai headquarters asking if they want a car that looks like this being seen by millions of people, or if they had rather take care of the problem and have the car look great again.

That is what I was thinking. I had to replace the tow cover that fits into the front bumper, and it only comes in black plastic and has to be painted.

Sometimes brand new cars get damaged in transportation (either from Korea to port of entry, or from port to dealer) and have to be repainted, or could have damaged as a demo (but still sold as new). Sometimes there is a record of any such damage that might be included in the service history. You might want to pay for a Carfax, or find another dealer who can check the Hyundai computers (not your selling dealer).

Transportation damage was more common 15-25 years ago. Cars used to be transported on open train cars, where anybody could throw rocks at the cars. I doubt if your dealer will admit damaging the car.....You could try a different dealer, and ask if the bumpers were repainted.

A good body shop should be able to tell if it was a repaint.

Yes, but it would be good for another Hyundai dealer to say that, so if someone bought the car new they could have a stronger claim against HMA or the selling dealer (whomever painted it). This would only apply if the car was sold as new to dtevescar (the OP).
