  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My Hyundai dealer is pushing that I have all of the 60k maintenance performed on my out of warranty (non CPO) 2012 5.0. I have read some reports that the 8-speed trans can actually become problematic after a flush. I know I'm ready for front brakes, and another 5w-20 oil change, and the AC and Radiator Coolant were recently serviced. I just question the high priced trans and top-end services that they recommend.

They probably won't touch the transmission as it is a sealed unit with "lifetime" fluid meaning that it supposedly does not need to be changed for 100k miles. Also, the type of trans fluid that is used in these cars is actually made by ZF I believe and is OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE!

I'll say this. I've owned many high mileage cars with automatic transmissions and never once did I have any of them flushed. I am a firm believer that nothing good ever comes from touching an automatic transmission unless it already has issues.

Maintenance is key to a great long lasting car, But sometimes dealers and repair shops care more about their pocket then yours. their no such thing as lifetime fluid that's a crock the manufacture will say that to make them look better for JD power cost of driving your vehicle BUT NEVER HAVE A FLUSH DONE! just drain and refill is perfect i would do it at 100k

Although people claim lifetime oils etc, in what they term as severe service, Hyundai calls for these fluids to be changed at 60K. I believe the 2012 5.0 has the Hyundai transmission not the ZF. If they're talking about a trans power flush, I'd pass. If it's simply a drain, dropping the pan, change the filter and refill I'd do that.

+1 Drain and refill transmission. I have it done every 60k to 70k and have new filter installed. Both my Mercedes' recommend the drain and refill every 40k miles. I tow a boat each summer so every spring I have the transmission fluid filter changed on my GMC Denali. I have had transmissions serviced this way for over 25 years and I drive my vehicles for over 200,000 miles and have not had a single transmission problem on any vehicle. No fluid is truly lifetime unless it means the lifetime of the warranty or until the transmission fails.

No matter what make sure whoever does the trans service uses the correct fluid it's in your owners Manuel, Most newer cars are using a cvt fluid but check in your manual.

Only cars with a CVT (Continuous Variable Transmissions) use that fluid, all others use ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) and each transmission has their own requirement. I believe my 2013 8 speed Hyundai uses SPH-lV type of ATF.

Lots of Dealer Charge you for the Flush, yet NEVER Perform it!!! Ask me how I know....lol..

Get a new battery?

I have nearly 74000 on my 2013 rspec (just got a few months ago). I will do a couple drain/fills for the transmission myself as the dealer wanted $600...yet they only charge $41 with tax for an oil change? Nearly 8q of oil
Then the rear dif fluid. Dealer quoted $130.

Previous owner had the brake fluid, coolent and ac vent cleaning done

I have a 2013 3.8 so the trans should be similar to yours.
The service manual for the 3.8 says the trans holds 10.14 qts and uses only 7.4 qts with a drain and flush.
Filter GENESIS; 3.8L $29.41
Trans Pan Gasket GENESIS; 3.8L $22.52
You should be able to get SPH-IV Transmission fluid from the Kia dealer for about $10 a quart.
So parts and fluid shouldn't be much more than $130 for the trans fluid change.
If you need a service manual for your 5.0 send me a PM.
