  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

working it hard in manual and getting up near the red line rpm's on the freeway the other day and all of a sudden i hear and feel a thud and lose power. look in the rear view mirror and see a huge plume of smoke. no power. coasted off the freeway down the off ramp and ran out of "roll" in the right lane. turned hazards on and got out.

AAA arrived quickly and said there is a huge puddle of motor oil under the car. i hear the 5.0 2012 had some issues so i'm sure this could be related. the car has only 26k miles on her and i just did a oil change with the dealer and they also checked on a check engine light recently.

at ant rate, the car is certified and i will be getting a loaner - sonata- tues. i asked the guy why nothing comparable ?? he said only the equis owners get the genesis. ok whatever. seems unfair but what are you going do.

sounds like the motor blew but will find out more in a few days.

Do you have a 5.0 or 4.6? Your profile indicates 4.6, while you mention 5.0 in the subject.

5.0 my 4.6 was rear ended and totaled. the 5.0 i just purchased last year

You know this could end up very well for you. You get a new engine with no oil consumption problems, no miles on it, no tune up cost (spark plugs etc.) for at least 60,000 miles. It is a PITA now, but long term, not bad. I had a new 1989 Mazda 929 and at 6000 miles it needed a new engine and after the new engine it never gave any problems, so it happens.

I am betting against deepcolor making it 60,000 miles on his next car.

Hopefully they won't claim that it was over rev'd.

Pretty sure that's impossible with the rev limiter.

Not possible with rev limiter and no known ECU reflashes on the market.

I guess they probably can't deny a warranty claim but OP said he was:

"working it hard in manual and getting up near the red line rpm's on the freeway..."

I would bet he drives that way every possible chance he gets. But not sure how Hyundai would know that.

While it wouldn't be hard for them to know (implementing data logging in an ECU is dead simple) it would be hard for them to deny claims. Driving the car aggressively is not a valid reason to deny a warranty claim if all of the maintenance has been taken care of. The car is operating within the rev range set by the manufacturer and it should be able to withstand any kind of driving within that rev range.

^^^ What he said.

It's probably suffered from low oil for a while (Due to 5.0 ring issue) and a rod bearing finally let loose.

Are you saying that Hyundai would know that on a stock car, or if they attached a data logging device (like the insurance companies)? Obviously, Hyundai has not installed a separate recording device, and I seriously doubt owner would let them.

I agree that Hyundai probably cannot deny a claim, but I don't think the design parameters of the engine can handle that kind of driving on a continuous basis.

proper oil levels were always maintained and regular oil changes at the dealer were done. never was it low. also, aggressive driving at high rpms was done very rarely. if a car can't take that once in a while, then something is seriously wrong withe motor. just my opinion.

In all honesty, the car/motor should be able to take that every day, not just rarely.

The engine generates over 400hp. They should expect the owners to drive it like they stole it.

+1

One Law of Physics is this: the more often an object is stressed the shorter life it will have.

Performance in moderation is the key to a long life.

i agree. that's why i felt a couple comments on here was just stupid. i don't get it. you just got to laugh sometimes. LOL

Agreed. That is also why engines are engineered to exceed the production output. Otherwise we would frequently be seeing blown engines from all manufacturers.
