  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

First post: I recently purchased a 2012 pearl white 5.0 non-rspec with 71K. It seems as though this is a rare combo, but I have some random questions that may only be able to be answered by someone with the same thing. (GDI 5.0 Tau V8, but with 4.6 body). First how many of these were made? My trunk lid does not raise up when I unlock it. Do I need new deck lid springs springs? My steering is unusually tight. I hear everyone saying it is light. I have no squeaks, squeals, grinding etc from the system. And goes where I point it. Just taut. Isnit supposed to be tight? Never driven an r spec but is the steering tighter in them? Will I pass emissions if I replace the resonator with a straight pipe? Everything else would stay stock. More questions to come. Anyone with feedback would be welcome. Thanks.

I have 2011 4.6 and my trunk lid does not raise up by itself, just pop-ups an inch (unlocks), and I have to use my hand to lift it.

I have a '12 3.8. The trunk lid never raised up, it just pops open. The steering is also a bit heavy for my liking, but it steers straight. It's all normal. My steering feel is not adjustable.

OP what state are you in? Some states are more lenient than others.

I'm in TX. And thanks for the trunk info guys. My steering is not adjustable either just firm. I just asked because I saw reviews that says its too assisted and kind of numb.

I would think that as long as you keep the rear mufflers and the cats that you shouldn't run into any issues.

The '12 Tech Package (your car) was the first year of electric steering. It's no doubt been improved since then. My '12 3.8 Premium Package has hydraulic-electric steering which, actually, may have more steering "feel" than your electric system.

I also have a burned out light on the Info/phone button, anyone have any idea how hard it would be for me to replace myself? I do almost all of my own repairs, but taking the console apart seems pretty daunting. I have to check to see if the "exclusionary" aftermarket warranty I bought would take care of it. 20180803_102519.webp

:welcome: The 2012 5.0 non RSpec is ineed a rare bird, as rare as the 2012 4.6. A beautiful, (more) powerful luxocruiser!

Yes the steering is supposed to be that firm.

1st gen Genesis (thru 2012 at least) did not have powered lifts on the trunks. Only the latch was push-button release. Pretty sure that's a 2nd gen only feature (2015+). Your car is fine.

Watch your oil level. 2012 5.0's were known to consume oil (~1 qt per 1000 mi or so). Lots of threads on the forums about this.

Might be semantics, but to me electro-hydraulic = electric. Belt-drive hydraulic = hydraulic.

The '09 4.6 Tech had electric boost on the steering, and was just as heavy/stiff/numb as my 2012 4.6 Tech, which I prefer to the old pinky-steer Cadillacs. My '09 had the tendency to overload the alternator/battery and the car would drop voltage and go dark for a split second while turning the wheel quickly at temp and low idle (while parking) with the lights, radio, and HVAC all on. The electrical system in the '09 couldn't handle all of that at max load from the steering booster. The steering would turn to concrete when it did this (no engine stall), so it was definitely not old-school hydraulic.

If you notice a high pitched VFD whine from the electric booster when turning the wheel.... yours is electric too.

I am aware of the oil issue, but I heard that they fixed this for later 2012 model year motors (can anyone validate that?) . My car was built in August of 2012, which would mean it was one of the last 12's and thus, should have escaped this problem. I have put about 1500 on it since I bought it about a month ago and it is still right on the dipstick. I think my biggest concern motor-wise would be carbon build up on the valves. Which, short of walnut blasting, I don't think there's much that can be done.

What about suspension lengevity? Are there any specific suspension parts that commonly wear out around 100k? Right now (~72K) all is smooth but my warranty is 3yrs 36,000 and I want to make sure I get what needs replaced before it runs out. My old Honda was known for tie rids ends, sway bar end links, cv boots, ball joints, etc. But I ran the same shocks and springs for 260,000+ with no issues.

I swapped to coilovers around 90k on my 2009 so the longevity of the 2012+ may be different but the shocks were completely shot when I took them off, rear shocks took about 3 minutes to go from completely compressed to full length. Other than that I haven't had to replace anything else.

This is gonna be a book, but I hope you all like it. Thanks for the reply. I won't go into how much I've worked on my own cars, but I have owned an 85 Grand Prix (G-Body) , put a Stage 4Rocket 350 out of a 72 Buick Gran Sport in it w/TH 350 tyranny) & 373posi out of a totaled '82 GN
), a 95 auto SHO, cat delete Y-pipe and FlowMaster' s (added under drive pullies, and new front differential that dyno said pulled 240 @the wheels) . Stock was 220 @ the block. Then 16 years with a 4-banger Honda. Didn't want it to begin with, but it wouldn't die. After a while, it became a crusade to how far I could get it. I, (not it), gave up at 264,000k. All in all, I know cars. But since buying the Genny, I have been seeing all kinds of stuff about coil overs. I don't know what these are! Please explain! I feel like I'm behind the times...

The suspension on mine is just fine still and brakes especially seem to really last on this car. I am at 100,700 miles as of today. my 2013 is a bit different than the 2012 regarding the steering wheel buttons and especially the infotainment system. it was revamped in 2013. I have a light out on my cruse button on the steering wheel (like your info button) and I will have to replace the whole part if I want it to be fixed.

I would NOT (just me) adjust the suspension on this car. It is already pretty low and has a nice stance and is pretty firm if you ask me. Coil overs are simply lowering springs/strut combos and some are adjustable as to the firmness of the ride.

This car is pretty rare so I like that (the 5.0 and/or RSpec versions are rare). You can look to get some larger rims to better fill up the wheel wells for the look.

Where in TX are you?

You'll have to argue with Hyundai about semantics. The '12 Tech has electric and the Premium Package has hydraulic-electric steering.

Tech and Premium are 3.8 trims right? And you can have both at the same time right? And both are standard on all 3 V8 models right? Just trying to get a handle on all different options.

LOL OK fair enough.

In 2012, all V8's only came one way: Tech.

First Gen V6's could come in Base, Premium or Tech.

I'm in suburbia East of Dallas. Is it worth a cold air intake or will K&N filter do?

Oh, another question. What exactly does ECO mode do? I see you can turn it off, but the only thing I've noticed is the green ECO light on the dash doesn't come on. Is there anything else that happens when this is off?

Changes the shift points lower and softens the gas pedal feel.
