2012 5.0 Rspec motor blown

Thanks. Maybe I should have learned that as well sooner.

But I am curious, now that you've been driving your 2015 Genesis a few weeks, what would you say are the areas of improvement you've noticed? Is the car more comfortable (seat and other factors) than the 2015? Are you see much if any difference in performance, because I understand the 2015 model is maybe 400-500 lbs heavier than the 1G Genesis?

Dean

I've put almost 300 miles on it now. Haven't been on the freeway but for a short trip. Mainly street roads. So far, I'm liking it.
Area's I've noticed improvements in over my R Spec:
1. Ride is more plush, not as harsh over rough roads.
2. No bump steer over potholes or in hard corners.
3. Seats are more comfortable.
4. side rear curtains.
5. Staggered wheels and tires.
real wood accents. Just need to figure out a good conditioner for it.

Some area's of concern:
1. There is a small spot on either side of the rear shade that lets in light and kind of bugs me when looking in the rear view mirror. Didn't notice it on the '12 but the '12 had dark tint on the window and I haven't tinted the '15 yet so it may not be an issue.
2. I like that the front passenger seat is now fully movable and is cooled. But I lost the rear seat heaters. My daughter used them often.
3. A pillar blind spot has moved. Not sure if it's better or not just yet.
4. staggered wheels and tires. Now I can't do my normal rotation.
5. It's going to take a bit to relearn the steering wheel controls and touch screen. While I don't necessarily miss the DSC knob, I was used to it on my '12.

Overall I do like the car. It is a big improvement over the '12 R Spec. While the car is heavier, it seems more refined in the driving experience and the power is still there with the 5.0, can't really notice a lack of performance.

I don't think that is correct, at least not for Hyundai.

An "official" recall can be voluntary, or ordered by the NHTSA, but are always done in coordination with the NHTSA. They are safety related, since NHTSA does not get involved with non-safety issues. When a recall occurs, owners are required to be proactively notified (usually via mail) by HMA (Hyundai Motor America).

A Hyundai "service program" can involve things that are not safety related, and the NHTSA is not involved. Mandatory Hyundai service programs must be performed by a dealer for affected vehicles in stock (including used) or any time a customer brings a vehicle in for servicing. Owners are not required to be notified in advance by Hyundai.

Regular service programs (not mandatory) are usually only done when a customer complains about an issue, and there is known solution. Some dealers may do them even if the customer does not complain, such as an ECU update.

All Hyundai service programs, recalls, etc have Hyundai TSB (Technical Service Bulletins) for them, but a TSB can also be issued for mundane things like paint codes, or other technical information provided to dealer service departments that were not in (or not completely explained) in the original service documentation.

So Mark, since you've enlightened us with this information, what is your source for it?

A. You secretly work for Hyundai and help them develop their business plan?
B. Your best buddies with the president of Hyundai and he told you his secrets?
C. You read it on the internet somewhere and regurgitated it here for us? ( Of course everything on the internet is true)
D. You slept in a Holiday Inn once?

A. Recalls

When a safety defect or a failure to comply with a safety standard is found, the vehicle or equipment manufacturer must take specific corrective steps known as recalls. NHTSA oversees the recall process to assure these steps are adequate. Information on recalls and other safety issues is available at www.safercar.gov, the NHTSA vehicle and equipment safety Web site.

While most recalls (78%) are initiated by manufacturers [therefore some are initiated by NHTSA], the majority of vehicles recalled (62%) have been the subjects of NHTSA investigations [therefore some were done voluntarily by the manufacturer]. If a safety defect or failure to comply with a safety standard is discovered, the manufacturer must notify vehicle owners, dealers, distributors, and NHTSA [therefore all recalls are overseen by NHTSA].

The manufacturer is also required to remedy the problem free-of-charge to owners by repairing, replacing, or repurchasing the vehicle or piece of equipment in question. The manufacturer initially decides what the remedy will be, but if it’s not effective, the manufacturer may be required to change it. These recall requirements apply to vehicles and equipment up to 10 years old and to tires up to 5 years old.

NHTSA maintains records for all safety recalls and monitors them to ensure that the scope is appropriate and that the completion rate and remedy are adequate.

B. I am not best buddies with the CEO, although I did once participate in a 90 minute online chat session (along with 15 others) with former HMA CEO John Krafcik (who is now in charge of the self-driving car effort at Google).

C. I did previously have access to the Hyundai Service website (on the internet) https://www.hyundaitechinfo.com/ back when it free, and I downloaded every single TSB for the Genesis. By reading all the TSB's, it was easy to see that some where recalls, some were mandatory service campaigns, some were optional service campaigns, and some were just informational. The TSB's which were labeled as recalls could be cross referenced to safety recalls for which I received notification from HMA in the mail.

Also, this information has been confirmed by discussions with other members of this forum since 2009, some of whom were Hyundai service advisors, techs, or HMA personal.

D. I think you mean Holiday Inn Express. Yes, I have stayed there a few times.

I thought you said you were "over it"? I don't think so.

Oh, I'm WAY over it. Just having a little fun. Enjoy your weekend.

Thanks. I"ll stick with the 2012 for now but if a good deal comes at some point on a low mileage used 2015 or a left over new one they lower the price a lot on, I might go for it.

So they are giving me a new long block. We will see how it goes. This dealer has never changed an engine in a Genesis and most local dealers don't have many techs for these cars either. Hopefully all goes well.

Also the shit really hit the fan in here.

s. Milone,
Good luck with the motor swap. Hope it all goes well my friend.

qstarweb,
They do have some great deals going on on left over '15's. They took 15K off of a '15 5.0 without any hassle.

Also I took the Genney out yesterday for a 100 mile round trip on the freeway. Let's just say I'm highly impressed with the smoothness of the power application. It's a night and day difference from my '12 R Spec. Several times I found myself up around 100 MPH without knowing it. More so than on the '12. Also had a few run ups to about 60 and thought I was only doing about 35-40. The power application and shifting is very smooth.

What was the final price you ended up paying for the 2015 Genesis? I've seen some online for around 37K, 2015 new models with 5.0.

38K plus the extras, tax title, etc. '15 5.0 in Empire State Gray with 109 miles.

So what month is a renewed tau build? The one I’m looking at is late ‘11

It was reported that certain 2012 5.0s with early VIN numbers did have high oil usage problems. The company HQs replaced many under warranty. Check with Hqtrs, not dealer. Probably some still out there with that problem with owners not knowing the history, or worse, dealers not providing guidance. Do not believe it was a company call back, just resolved as the problem occurred and reported.

Late 11 MY Tau's will not have the valve spring issues (fixed at the end of '10 or before start of '11), and are 4.6 port injected. 2012 5.0 GDI's are a completely different engine.

I hate dredging up old post but I WISH I had seen this before! Two weeks ago while heading up to our family vacation, my 2012 Genesis R-Spec with 109k miles started knocking an hour away from home. I called my mechanic that does my oil changes and light repairs and got his opinion. He advised towing it somewhere or back to him. I had it towed back to him. He put a stethoscope on it and said it is definitely internal. I had the high oil usage issues and was told it was kind of normal for these motors and thought nothing of it. I kept oil with me and added it as needed. Long story short, the motor is toast. Hyundai wants 17k for a new one and 8k on the cheaper side for a used one with 69k miles on it. I'm really disgusted because I loved this car. Hyundai USA told me to call my local dealer and the the dealer is dragging their feet. Completely fed up here and I don't have the faith now to ever own another Hyundai. Really feeling stuck and lost on what to do next.

Man i am so sorry!!! This sux! Hyundai needs to step and replace it ASAP as it is their error not yours. The DEVIL side of me would say take them to court, get the money and put a G80 motor in it LOL . j/k
I hope you get this resolved with ease by getting a NEW warrantied motor for another 100k miles or at least a newer motor and your mechanic install it for you.

Certainly does suck. Anything Hyundai does will be a goodwill gesture. Legally, it is 9,000 miles out of warranty. There has been issues though.

Certainly not worth the owner spending 17k for a new motor. Maybe the dealer (with help from corporate) can give him 17k discount plus trade in on a G80

Sorry for your loss, tunez23. Unfortunately, our cars are much like German luxobarges ... very expensive to repair with limited parts supply market, and it's best not to own one out of warranty. You're stuck pretty much with only HMA as a parts supplier with very high prices and pretty much zero aftermarket.

You could try the Copart route with a good mechanic, similar to what forum member Audio did with his car.

Good luck tunez23 with your resolution.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was prepping to either buy another car to drive while storing the Genesis and picking up a lower mileage motor from LKQ (the same place Hyundai was going to buy the used one) or hoping they would do something to help and meet me around the $5k range for the replacement. Then I saw this post and called them back and called them out on it and the early issues. Their tune completely changed and the service manager was at quite a loss for words. Waiting to hear more back from them as he is now escalating the issue up the chain more to try to find a resolution.

Crossing my fingers!

I was in and out of the dealer with this car since I got it. It was burning oil like crazy and I did several oil consumption tests every time it was 1.3 quarts low at 1000 miles. They had an excuse every time and made me do the test over and over. Each time forcing me to drive low on oil. Also I'm pretty positive they were using regular oil instead of synthetic like they should. Eventually I was away for business and my wife brought it in the claimed it only lost .3 quarts. I tried going to the next closest dealer but they didn't diagnose problems on the weekend. I watched the oil and I was adding a quart every few hundred miles. Then driving home from a long travel day from work the car juddered flashed the check engine light then shut off on me while I'm in cruise on the highway. No noise at all it was very odd. All the lights flashed like there was a short and it smelled of burnt electronics and a small cloud went buy me.
Called Hyundai assistance and got it towed in to the closest dealer at 130am. Two days later I find the motor went. They are still waiting to hear back from corporate.

I bought this with 24k it blew at 46k

I had an 09 and it didn't have a single issue. So far this one has had the Lane Departure replaced, the whole wiper assembly and electronics replaced, it needs the light switch replaced as the headlights turn off when putting the turn signal on, the drivers side windows switch needs replacing too as the windows will go down normally then the get stuck down, transmission has thrown codes and needed to be reprogrammed and now the motor popped.

I'll hear soon enough about the new motor.
Same thing happen to me but bought mine with 20000 blew my 5.0 2012 R-Spec @ 70000 ..... after fighting literally tooth n nail for 6 months at least got my 3 rd party warranty to approve new engine @ $11k now at 110000 it feels like its about to blow again.
