If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. 2012 automatic transmission shifting issues

My 2012 3.8 had the same issue at around 80,000 mi, but after like 3-4 trips complaining about rough shifts and them claiming to reset shift points
and on the last time taking it they finally said they would order and replace transmission so thank god for the CPO warranty.
I probably would highly recommend anyone having this issue look into replacing transmission. I know its costly but you don't have to go to dealer just
order online and have a trusted mechanic swap it out.
Best of luck guys.

There are a couple recent threads where folks had success replacing solenoids.

Update

As predicted, the new tranny at approx. 54k km is now not catching gears and banging into gear almost full time.

I've talked with the local Hyundai dealer who has not been on the ball with calling back and answering phones so does not look good, but he said he will open a case with Hyundai Canada if another new tranny is whats called for. I have spent close to $8000 dollars in one year for this vehicle there so I am expecting them to fight for me.

I am sick of car companys and dealers pushing people around. These vehicles are not safe to be driving like this. I would even be ok with them cutting me a deal for one of their inventory and taking this lemon off my hands. Then I can move on with my life and they can sleep in peace.

Lets see how it goes

Hello all, I'm looking for some help regarding a dangerous (albeit intermittent) issue I'm having with my 2012 3.8 v6 sedan.

A few months ago, I started noticing an issue in which the transmission would not shift smoothly to the next gear at around 25mph. Originally, it only seemed to have issues when it rained, but now it seems to happen regardless of weather conditions. I don't think this is related to the general lack of smoothness in shifting that I've read about on the forums here.

Typically, the transmission will shift smooth enough for a few days, but then shifting gets progressively more rough over a couple days until the car shudders to the point that it's physically painful. After that, it seems to return to normal for a few days, thus restarting the vicious circle. I did notice that the car will sometimes hit 3500 RPM before it finally engages the next gear (2nd or 3rd?)

I've taken it to the dealership twice, but they have been "unable to duplicate the issue" both times. (Bob Howard Hyundai, South OKC) - Most of the time their service is solid, so I don't think they're being malicious in saying they can't duplicate the issue.

Anyone have any recommendations/ideas?
I’m having the same issue with my 2012 sedan 3.8 V6 it’s not shifting gears smoothly and then it jerks really hard I’ve also took to multiple shops to get a test on it and they keep saying there’s nothing wrong but it has to be something and it’s really annoying while driving because it jerks hard . Can anyone help me with this problem? Need answers Hyundai Genesis

All gears should shift like butter, you may have your transmission going out, I would def look into getting a replacement.

Hello , I had similar issues with the same year car and I changed 6 solenoids in the transmission after reading Misa3.8’s post in the thread titled Transmission problems. And it fixed the problem

Mine is starting to do that intermittently. Which solenoids did you change and did you have a shop do it or yourself? How much did it run you if I may ask.

hello I did it myself, I have a friend that has a hoist in his garage, if you look on you tube and search Hyundai Genesis 8 speed transmission it highlights the 6 that I changed. I ordered them all online from Fourgreen auto parts. I probably didn’t need all 6 but I thought if I was going to do it I would change them and Forum member Misa3.8 had changed all 6 as well. I also bought 5 litres of fluid from the dealership, in total it probably ran me just under $1000

That is creasy, people don't talk about this problem on you tube. They say good things about the Genesis. I was searching for a used Gensis and I found one for 10K, 2012, and the milage is 75,000. I thought it is a good deal but after reading your replies. I change my mind and I will sear for a Toyota or Honda

I agree, I don’t believe all of them are effected but had I have known I definitely wouldn’t have bought it. I’ve fixed it ( knock on wood) but it wasn’t a pleasant ordeal.

Hi there, I am having the same issues for the past 3 days as most in this thread with my 2013 rspec 5.0 sedan 109000 km (high rev jumps at low speeds that stay there even when not touching the gas, then suddenly the vehicle dramatically shifts with immediate increase in power. Feels like it doesn't know when to switch gears and is straining itself and then all of a sudden figures it out and shoots forward. This is especially noticeable when first accelerating and seems the car has 0 power to get going at times) Has anyone had any further problems because you continued to drive with this issue? Wondering if I should get a rental for the time being - It can be very scary when I'm in high traffic going & stopping often, but seems to not be a problem at all when I'm on the freeway above 60 kmh. (I also see the comments about the solenoids and will keep that in mind) Any updated info would be appreciated.

My transmission has been shifting poorly for about 30,000 miles now. It hasn't gotten any better or worse.

I have a 2013 Sedan 3.8, I drive UBer so I'm in my car a lot, I still don't get why some people tear their seats with less mileage... lol that get me... lol.

Replicating the problem you need the car to be hot, like the engine and transmission.

Mine hard shifts at 2 points between 3-4? Or ?...right around 40MPH. It's been doing this for about the last 10,000-12,000 miles. Now is doing it occasionally at 10-15 mph if I'm hitting it hard.

Now mind you I finesse the fuel and keep Rpm low so no hard shift it's there but not hard, I do this to keep things smooth.

Also mind you I get 34 mpg on highway and straight runs yes through mountains of CO, UT, WY. 26-28mpg city.

Yes, we dealing with a sealed transmission, which means we going to need a Tranny filter kit too(gasket and filter unless it's a reusable gasket your good)

Question 1 - Did any of you use brake clean and just clean the solenoids because a solenoid opens and closes if it's dirty or gunky cleaned up and reused? And change the filter kit?

Question 2 - I find it odd that these transmissions are dying at 50,000 and less miles. That's not right, especially for a sealed transmission, anyone else think this for a luxury car?

Question 3 - DIY cost for around $400-$600 bucks buying new parts and replace? Solenoids, filter kit, 2 cans brake cleaner to clean pan and Tranny juice? Might add a vacuum fluid exchanger, from Harbor freight to suck the transmission juice through dip stick as much as possible then drop the pan, I think they about $50? That sound about right?

Question 4- how much for dealer to do this? $800-$1000?

Why not just have the fluid changed first before messing with any solenoids?

Luxury car has nothing to do with failures. It can happen to any car regardless of cost.
