If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I haven't been able to locate a discussion of my current issue where the 2012 premium unit occasionally freezes at the Genesis home screen but the radio function still works, albeit without the ability to see what normally would be displayed. Rear camera also not displayed. I am wondering if it arises in part because of engaging reverse out of my garage too quickly on occasions. This morning I tried switching off the engine and then on but no change. However, doing the same 15 minutes later the functions were back. It has been intermittent but has happened the last two mornings. If it continues, is there anything we can do or is it an inherent problem?

2 things:

1. Always wait until "fast idle" is finished before putting the car in gear. You need that time for fluids to circulate before driving.

2. If you turn off the car immediately after starting, say during "fast idle", you're potentially inviting trouble at the next start: knocking, misfire, codes. At least that's true of the 4.6.

I realize that doesn't answer your frozen screen question, but I couldn't resist.

My 2011 4.6 screen has never frozen. However, when we start the car we do not put it in drive or reverse until after we push the DIS knob down to bring the screen up and buckle seat belts. I don't know if that has anything to do with a frozen screen or not. Also, I agree that a start and quick off and restart is bad on any cold engine. BTW our Mercedes E500 sometimes does freeze on the nav screen, but I think it has to do with the CD being cold or damp in high humidity. The Genny does not have a cd nav system, the Genny is a hard drive.

My 2012 3.8 w/premium has done this once or twice in the 2+ months I have owned it. Each time it happened, I, like you, put it in gear very quickly after engine start.

Consistent with the advice above, I have simply been a little more patient (but no more than 10 seconds or so) before I engage reverse. The problem has not occurred since.

I did have a episode where I thought it was frozen when I went into "Drive" but apparently the NAV unit was just thinking because it became fully functional after about 15 seconds.

Finally, I learned that when it did freeze that I seemed to be able to unfreeze it by turning the car off, opening the driver's door, closing the driver's door and then restarting the car.

In total, two incidents in the first week and nothing since then.

I have never had this problem on my 2012 fully loaded sedan, but then I wait a minute after starting the car before I do anything. I agree, it may be related to fast getaway. You could be overloading the can-bus.

When the car starts, the system is running a number of self tests, booting up the Nav system, checking for a bluetooth connection, checking for an IPod or usb, and trying to get a gps lock. If you start the car and then quickly go into reverse, the system has to change to AV mode and add a video signal to the bus, while trying to do everything else.

While theoretically this should not happen, I can see where it could lock up the system. I suggest you just wait a few seconds for the system to fully boot up before putting the car into reverse or pressing the dic button.

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately the fast getaway is required in pursuit of the dropping of kids at school and the mad dash to the train station!:( I'll try to build in a few second pause into my schedule!

I wonder what would happen if you backed into your parking spot so you could make a speedy exit without having to reverse. Start the engine and normally step past R to drive, not giving the system to switch to the back-up camera mode.

I have had the same thing happen twice in the first 3,000 miles (2012 Premium V6). When I turned the car off and back on, the issues corrected itself. My issue had had nothing to do with putting it in reverse as I pull forward out of my garage. I do not remember if I put it in gear quickly after starting the car, but I usually wait at least 1 minute before doing so.

Seems on par for what forum members say for Hyundai's radio system.

On my 2009 (non-Tech Package), if I open the door too soon after stopping engine, next time I start the car it will loose position on my iPOd and it starts playing at beginning of very first song (in first album) instead of where it left off. It seems that the Genesis has always had similar problems, but I would have expected it to be fixed by 2012.

I have experienced this same behavior. My wife (who drives the car most times) said it has happened a couple times to her. A shut-off/start usually resets it.
I was in San Diego and needed the Nav guidance to find my way back to the hotel.....took 4-5 times of the stop/start to finally get the Nav unit working. In a pinch I had the old Garmin in the trunk if I needed it....

I will have it checked when next in for oil change

Hi ya guys .... I have spent much too much time on this & my 2010 v8 w/tech does the same thing ipod freeze, audio no sound, does not work but after parking it comes back !!! Well I hate to give you guys the bad news but in my opion the electronics in the car is just CRAP and nothing can fix it. HYUNDAI NEEDS TO CHANGE THE WHOLE SYSTEM IN THE NEW CARS COMING but that does not help me or you. So I have a little battery panasonic radio on the floor in the back & when my system goes out I just go battery fm radio...... and wire headset for my phone ( so I don't get a ticket) and call it a day !!! WHEN MY LEASE IS UP I'M DONE WITH HYUNDAI . oh yea I must have sent 25 emails to Hyundai usa & only got one answer ... he said I will get back to you ! ...still waiting it's been a few months ha,ha,ha but I must say other than the audio system I like the car very much ......... BUT I LIKE MY MUSIC MORE IN THE CAR !!!! I DO A LOT OF DRIVING ALONE SO TUNES ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO ME !!!! THE NAV ALSO TELLS YOU TO GO WRONG WAY !!! I DON'T USE IT .. JUST CRAP AT LEAST AROUND NYC ..... I WANTED TO SAVE A FEW BUCKS AND GOT WHAT I PAID FOR !!! BMW HERE I COME 18 MONTHS TILL I GET MY NEW BMW 535I CAN'T WAIT ...GOOD LUCK !!

UPDATE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..... HYUNDAI SENT ME A DEALER CREDIT GOOD FOR 6 MONTHS $250.00 .... AND SAID MORE OR LESS WE CAN'T FIX IT HAVE A NICE DAY !!!!! I guess it's something but HYUNDAI can kiss my ass I'm done and will never buy another HYUNDAI again.
I'm driving a 2010 v8 w/tech & I find it very sad that the 2012 is still being sold with the electronics being a joke and HYUNDAI knows it. I really don't understand why they would build just a good car and keep selling them with the CRAP electronics. I wonder how much longer will it go on for ? 3-5 years glad I won't be in one to find out....... COUNTING THE DAYS TILL MY NEW BMW !!!!! GOOD LUCK EVERBODY, oh yea my son's BMW system is GREAT !!!

This has happened to me just now, and all I did was turn on the car and it stayed on the "Genesis" welcome screen without me touching the gears. Restarted, same thing, and then again same thing. I just got home with it still frozen. I hope when i wake up it's fixed but I wonder if the dealer can help fix this issue?

I pressed buttons and it seems the setup with work (only the display brightness options).
I also tried shutting off just the radio but that didn't work neither.

PS: it's not cold outside or anything neither only like 60 degrees.

Same here, it has happened to me about 4 times on my 2012 genesis 3.8 with premium. Restarting the car did not always fix it right away. I do think it happened to me when I shifted quickly after getting into the car, but I can't replicate it when I try. Please post if you find out that the dealer had a solution for this problem.

This has been happening in my 2011 3.8 Premium (no Tech) for months. Once or twice a week, the screen freezes during startup. Somestimes the freeze occurs on the Hyundai logo, but lately it's been happening on the Nav "agree" screen.

I can cycle through the audio sources using the buttons (on the dash and the steering wheel). Sometimes I'm able to move through one screen (e.g., Setup), but then it freezes.

My local dealer, Mirak Hyundai in Arlington MA, has ordered a replacement system... but it's back-ordered! So who knows when we'll get it replaced. Or if that will even help.

We also have the problem with the tilt steering wheel: It gets stuck in a low position after retracting, so when I start the car back up, it stays low (and blocks my view of the speedometer). The dealer has also ordered a replacement part for this (there was a TSB), but we haven't had it installed yet... we're hoping for the new nav/audio system to come in soon and do everything at once.

We're not thrilled about this. When the car is working right, we love it. We wouldn't even be too bothered if the problems could be fixed quickly. But the delay is getting annoying. I used to praise this car to all of my friends, but lately I just keep quiet.

Just returned from my dealer for the regular oil change, they checked out the Nav unit based on my complaint ( see 12-1 comment in thread). They tried a reset, talked with Hyundai, and a new NAV/radio unit is on order. No ETA for delivery, but the unit has not failed since a month ago.....,

Have had the same issues a couple of times with my 2012 3.8 Premium. I read in the manual somewhere that the nav system starts to boot when the door is unlocked. I think jumping right in and starting the car quickly interupts the boot process and locks up the system. I guess I could try to prove my own theory sometime and re-post.

I have a 3 week old 2012, and this has happened to me also. This sounds like a classic case of poor software. I have seen situations like this in complex software systems. It required thorough test design and testing due to the magnitude of conditions that can be encountered. That being said - the main issue is having software engineers that know how to design the software. This is not rocket science and Hyundai needs to fix this. I could understand if this happened for one year, but this is going on 4 years now - same problems. It may be aggravated by some marginal signal levels or poor connections - but good software can handle that. To have the whole system lock up and stay that way until the next reinitialization (if you are lucky - mine took several tries to get it running again) is just crap. COME ON HYUNDAI GET IT RIGHT - IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT THEN ADMIT IT AND GIVE US AN OLD ANALOG RADIO AND A GARMIN.

DonB: Interesting theory. Once I'm in the car, I'll try pausing a few seconds before hitting the start button. I wish the problem were more predictable so I could figure out if this really helps, or if it's just hibernating!

Update: The new audio/nav system arrived and will be installed on Friday. In the mean time, I've been careful to wait a few seconds before hitting the start button, and whenever I remember to do so, the display screen works fine. The one time I really rushed it (hit start as soon as my butt hit the seat), the screen crashed. Not the best experiment, I know, but perhaps interesting.

I just had this happen to my 2012 Geneses only it has been threedays now and the screen hasn't awaken. After reading all your post I am feeling reel good about my new car. I have an appointment tomorrow, but I am not real optimistc that it can be re-set. Has nyone tried disconnecting the battery and letting it sit for a while?
