  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2012 Premium Intermittent Freezing

I still believe that there is a clue for Hyundai to go on if they would take up the issue....press the PHONE button while the screen is frozen with the logo displayed. You will see a banner at the top "Bluetooth Initializing". I fully believe that this is related to the wonky bluetooth implementation...

Alas...Hyundai will never take on this issue, too many cars (too expensive) to do a campaign on with no safety/drivability concerns....

It would be nice if someone from Hyundai was part of this board, maybe they would know how to escalate this issue to someone who gives a damn. This is my first Hyundai, so I still have a little hope that Hyundai will address this issue, it just needs to get to the right person at the company. I would tend to think that if it is related to software, not hardware, then a software update during an oil change would be able to fix the issue (and it wouldn't be that expensive for Hyundai).

It would be interesting if someone who had this issue happening every week, that doesn't use Bluetooth, turn it off in their radio. See if it still gets stuck if the Bluetooth module is off. Then at least we could isolate Bluetooth since I also noticed that when I switch to the phone menu, while it is stuck, I get the message about Bluetooth being initialized.

*** UPDATE ***

I was able to get to North Freeway Hyundai in Houston with my car in the "Frozen" state...of course they looked and said yep its locked up...he documented it, but stated that they had no diagnostic tool for the infotainment/Nav system...

After the oil change he said he had good news...They had spoken with an Engineer who would come on Thursday (this was Monday) and "reprogram" the radio with a fix for the problem..woohoo! After some reflection and research, I called him back on Wednesday and told him that I can find no TSB or other reference for this "fix". He said that the "fix" was not published and could only be done by the engineer. I told him that this sounded like an experiment and I was going to stay with my car and the engineer while they did this "fix"...He gave me the "You can't go in the garage" speech...Really!!!

I told him I would not be bringing in my car in that case....

Anyway...for someone who is experiencing this problem and wants to let an engineer experiment on their car, this may be an opportunity for you. I'll wait until it is a published TSB before I let them do it without me being present...

I took mine in for an oil change and it was frozen on the drive in. Told the dealer and they said they had no way to diag it, and had seen it before. They said there is a fix - they reload the software. Well, they did that and it didn't freeze again until the next morning.... Mine freezes about once a week, and can take anywhere from a second or two up to 10 seconds to boot up when starting the car.

I have one question for the board - Has anyone had the dealer fix this issue? If so what did they do to fix it?

FL_Bob,

Glad you posted here, maybe I saved myself a wasted day by refusing to let them perform this undocumented "fix" on my car that may not have worked.

Can you please have a look at your paperwork from when they "fixed" yours and post the exact wording of repair description? Does it have a TSB#?

Thanks...Richard

I looked at the invoice and they did not list anything for the "reflash". The service advisor said this was not a TSB. I am ready to call again, but I would really like to know if ANYONE with this problem has had it fixed. Looks to me like maybe only 5% of us have this issue, and I have never heard a report of a successful fix. I am not too excited about shotgun replacing parts unless there is some history of success.

IKEYM...I appreciate your frustrations, but the issue being discussed in this thread is NOT the same as what you have.

The issue being discussed here relates ONLY to the PREMIUM PACKAGE WITH TOUCHSCREEN NAVIGATION.

Please help up to stay on topic...Thanks.

Thanks for looking....

Since they replaced my Navigation system it has not frozen. However I have not made any major trips and would not be suprised if it goes out the day before I am scheduled to depart on one. Someone mentioned that it looked like only 5% of us may be experiencing this problem. I sucpect that it is far larger than that. Remember not every owner is aware of this blog. I have given some concideration to starting a class action if the problem reoccures. It seems that that may be the only way to get Hyundai's attention. Like others, I really like this car and would much rather see Hyunday get serious about tackling the problem so we could have confidence that whatever corrective action they take on an indvidual car would really be a fix.

My Genesis is doing the same thing w/ the monitor. I did take it in & they said that they were replacing my radio. I picked up my car after the repair & the screen started doing the same thing when I started up my car later that same day. I called them back & told them that I could hear the radio but the screen was black w/ just the Hyundai name showing so they told me to bring the car back in. I brought it back in today & they told me after having my car all day that they ordered me a new radio. I said but last week you replaced the radio & they told me, no we replaced the monitor last time this time we are replacing the inside of the radio. They lied to me last time because I called to say my stations were exactly how I had them programmed so they couldn't have replaced my stereo & the lady told me that they reprogrammed my stations for me, but today they are telling me that they only replaced the monitor. I am so frustrated by the service dept & the people @ Firzgerald Hyundai. So now I have to bring it back in tomorrow if the part comes in......I'll keep everyone updated on what happens after they really replace the stereo

Anybody have any positive experiences with getting this issue resolved? I did see that Hyundai created a software update to the transmissions in the V6 3.8 (which I haven't yet gotten) and I am wondering if it was somehow due to the people on this forum, since there were threads of people complaining about the tramsmission. I hope that our general complaining about the system freezing will accomplish the same thing. If a dealer replaced your radio, you had the problem again, and went back to the dealer let us know how they responded. If the escaleted the issue further up the food chain at Hyundai, or if they offered to replace it again (which most likely would not solve the issue).

Hi ya guys .... I have spent much too much time ..................

You need to start an arbitration proceeding against Hyundai. Sounds like you have all the proof you need to win.

Posting the same thing here 25+ times is not going to solve your problems. It will, in fact, increase your problems and your frustration, and reduce your health. IT'S BEGInnING To SHoW IN yoUr PoStS.

FYI the Lexicon system in the Hyundai is made by Harman Kardon which is also in Mercedes.

My 2010 3.8 Premium has just started doing this after about 2.5 years of working properly, or at least not freezing. It's internittent, but I'm notifying the dealer as the electronics warranty is done at 3 years. This is a pretty good indication that Hyundai doesn't have as much faith in the electronics as the rest of the car.

Any information on programing homelink appreciated. I cannot program channel 1. When I push button, I get a steady red light. Channel 2 & 3 seem to work fine.

Was just invited to a Hyundai Think Tank (looking for customer feedback). My first message to them was to communicate the issue we are experiencing with our Navigatoin system. Will post back if I get any response. They are looking for feedback to design future Hyundais, but hopefully they won't forget that current owners talk to potential buyers for "future Hyundais":)

I have been having problems with the display/Nav/Bluetooth/... freezing since the car was new (2012 3.8 Premium). Two weeks ago went to the dealer (2nd time) and they replaced the Nav. NO PROBLEM SINCE!! It used to freeze up once or twice a week, and it has been flawless for 2 weeks. When they did it I lost all my radio presets, bluetooth pairings, waypoints, favorites, etc. But it is worth it.

The first time I brought it to the dealer they just reloaded the software, that did nothing.

So there is hope to resolve the problem!!

Well it has happened again. I first wrote on this blog back in January that the Navigation System on my 2012 Hyundai Genesus had frozen up. Just to recap, on 1/9/12 I took the car into the dealer for the problem with the Nav system not booting up. This was after only six thousand miles. It was not until 1/31/12 that I received a new Navigation System. After reading the entries on this blog, I held my breath everytime I started the car. Well Sunday 6/17/12, less than five months and eight thousand miles since the replacement, the Nav System failed to boot and is still in that state. The bluetooth and radio still work. Just not the Nav and voice activation. I took the car in on Monday 18th and the dealer was going to research with Hyundai and let me know how they plan to proceed. Well here we are on Saturday the 23rd and no word from the dealer. I suspect a new Nav system is on order. However, this does not give me much comfort since these things only seem to last months. I fear that Hyundai will continue to replace them until the warrenyt runs out. Obvisouly we can't depend on the Navication Working when it is need. I am begining to think in terms of a "class action".

Guys, I wonder if you are noticing the same phenomenon. I seem to be getting way less stuck screens than during the colder months. In fact,I haven't gotten any in the past two months.I am not sure if I just changed my habits and open the car from the key fob giving the car more time to boot up, or if the temperature outside has any effect. Has anybody else noticed that the navigation doesn't get stuck as much?
