  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I've just recently joined the club by purchasing a '12 R Spec from an American car dealer here in the Midwest. I did quite a lot of research beforehand, so I thought, but have discovered through more lurking in this forum after the purchase that the '12s sometimes had engine problems as well as transmission problems and certainly want to avoid feeling the hurt of those problems outside of warranty coverage.

The car had what was described to me as a "lower engine rebuild" at around 54k and also a 'piston repair' which the service guy was a little confused about as he indicated that would have been part of the lower rebuild. After those services @ 54k, it went to the dealership I bought it from @ ~58k. There is no repair history for the transmission, but I'm actually happy to see the engine work done as that makes me less worried about the oil consumption I have read about. I'm a little more knowledgeable than your average car owner, but I'm not really clued in enough to understand the depth/scope of these repairs.

The car was tucked in the very back of the lot, had a funk to it (that they claimed to not smell) due to trapped water, a problem with the blower fan electronics that had to be repaired by Hyundai which is when the rest of the history was discovered. I got it below the asking price, which was below KBB. I'm worried the American dealership's neglect and aggressive pricing may have been a due to their knowledge of lemon or stinker.

Should I go back in time and get a warranty extension which would add another 5y/60k with a $100 deductible for any repair?

How much for thw warranty? I got a 13 rspec a few months ago and have 74k miles. The previous owner did have the ac system cleaned at the dealer. Also replace the cabin air filter

I was quoted nearly $4k for an extended warranty and I believe only untill 100k miles...cant remember exactly.

All of that to say I have purchased 2 extended warranties on cars and basically broken even on both.
So if yiu can afford now, it may give you a piece of mind moving forward.

The +5y/+60k price is around 2k, so very fair. We can afford it, but it wasn't really a planned expenditure. Not that a blown trans would be either. I just don't have a strong feeling for the reliability of the '12s after reading about 1st gen trans/1st gen 5.0 oilburning issues. It would certainly provide some peace of mind to have the coverage, but if the likelihood is less than I've come to be worried about then I don't want to take that plunge.

For 5yr 60k $2k....I would jump all over that.
If your headlights have an issue... $500- $1k each. The power mirrors...the audio system...WAY over that.
Get that warranty and the ride and enjoy

Thanks very much for the suggestion OUSig

That is bumper to bumper correct not just say electrical or some other part? Either way I say go for it but if bumper to bumper that is a great deal. Dis you get that from the dealer?

Is it an HPP Extended Warranty? If so, I'd jump all over it, particularly if it's Platinum.

I'll get the fine detail on the warranty offering. The dealer I purchased the vehicle from said it would cover all electronic components as well as the drivetrain that would normally be covered by the 10/100. The value is likely due to some rocky challenges when purchasing the vehicle.

i bought cpo warranty, with the purchase of my car from hyundai. the amp cost $4000 to replace, which is rediculous but it paid for itself in 1 service visit.

Can you extend the bumper-to-bumper warranty if your car was CPO like mine was? Mine is just about to run out. I'd love to get a 200k mile warranty for that car. It has been reliable but I fear the $$$ I might have to spend later.
