All, does anybody experience the symptom where your car kind of pulls to the side when you are taking an exit ramp at higher speeds? I seem to have this happen when I am going faster than I should (40-50mph) in a ramp clearly marked for 35mph. So my solution is simple. (I know, just slow down ad follow the limit), but realistically , I know that wont happen.

I have just purchased this car with 25,000 miles on it, so t has been driven a bit. After looking on this forum, I see people mentioning "rigid collars" , and I think that maybe having those installed might help. My prior vehice was a Nissan Altima 3.5SL which had a very tight feeling when I pushed it in curves. I also know that there is a big difference based on FWD versus RWD, so I expect things to be different.

Anyway, I was wondering how extensive and costly this option woud be to have done. I really don't want to mess with it myself, and would prefer just to pay someone who knows what they are doing to install them. Any thoughts, comments or suggestions ?
 
What brand, size, name and speed rating are your tires?
 
Hi, well first off I would get your suspension mountings/bushes inspected..
@25,000 miles your shocks could be well worn.. Check your tires, are they the correct ones for the vehicle? tire pressures? Are you on the original wheels?
or aftermarket? Even engine mountings can affect how a car handles.
Steering & wheel alignment should be checked & adjusted if required........
 
Most likely not shocks. Todays shocks should last 100k or more. The shocks on my Genny are like new with 99k on them. My 2005 Acura had 239k and the shocks were still good per me and the dealer's service department.
 
Tires are KUMHO 225/55 ZR17 ( 101W XL ) style is ECSTA LX Platinum. The tread is decent, and I would expect them to be original rubber. The wheels are stock Hyundai ten spoke style that normally come on the cars. This was a rental vehicle also. I will look on Consumer Reports for the rating of the tires. Still wondering about "rigid collars" too, thanks so far.

Most likely not shocks. Todays shocks should last 100k or more. The shocks on my Genny are like new with 99k on them. My 2005 Acura had 239k and the shocks were still good per me and the dealer's service department.

1. If you think you stock shocks are like new at 99k, you're high.
2. Find a new dealership if your Acura dealer told you that. Those struts have been toast for over half their life. A strut doesn't have to leak to be bad. They can be worn to the point complete non-function with no external signs. I just removed 4 completely dead struts not that long ago on one car. None leaked, but you could push the rods in by hand with little efford and they would stay in.

Modern OEM struts/shocks generally have an operational lifespan of 80-90k before they should be replaced.

OEM tires on Base Trim Genesis were Dunlops.

There is a recent thread about rigid collars for Genesis Sedan, so you can search for it. But I suspect that there is something wrong that you might want to get fixed first.
 
Thanks Mark, where do you think would be the best place to start? Should I go to Discount Tire and ask that they ride along to show them what I am talking about ? To me that makes the most sense. After reading other links on the forum, there is a lot of discussion about tires, and maybe I just need something thing better than what I have. I would just hate to invest $700+ to find out that it wasn't the tires after all.

have you investigated the history of the vehicle?
It could have been in a major accident & cheaply or badly rebuilt!!
Did you get any Warranty? ---------------- I personally would pay an independent motor engineer to thoroughly check the vehicle from bumper to bumper, get a written report and go from there.. Most major bodyshop companies will do the inspection etc. etc...

Genny replaced the Acura. I may get more life from shocks due to almost all smooth highway miles in a short time, 35k to 40k per year. Struts were checked carefully by inspection, bounce test as compared to new car on lot and there is no cupping of tires, no vibration, no oil leak, no noises, no floating. So I am not high.

Mr Cool, I did do my research with CarFax and it is CPO ( 60,000 & 5 year bumper to bumper and an additional 100,000 mile power train ) through the Hyundai dealer I bought from, so i am in the clear about damage. Might just be the rubber, will double check the inflation in the morning. I appreciate the comment though. Probably thinking Pure Contact Continentals or Bridgestone Serenity.

Since you have the Base Trim model with 17" wheels, I would strongly suggest Michelin Primacy MXV4 (not MXM4). It is not available for Genesis 18" wheel sizes, so not much discussed on this forum. These are outstanding tires. If there is a Costco near you, check their pricing since it may be worth the yearly membership fee and Costco offers free road hazard insurance and free tire rotations and they have excellent service (they also use nitrogen which keeps tire pressure from leaking out as fast as air).

If you need new tires, then get them put on and then hand the car over to dealer for alignment and tell them to fix any problems that remain after that (under warranty).

Can you describe a little more what is going on? For example, I am guessing that you are going through a sweeping curve exit ramp. Is it banked? Is it a constant radius? Are you accelerating into the curve, going a steady speed, or slowing down? Does the behavior feel like it changes if you brake into the curve? Does the car feel like it is pulling into the inside of the curve or drifting to the outside of the curve? What tire pressure are you running? Are you hearing any tire noise through the curve? Is the "sway" you mention body roll, or is it something else?
 
check tire pressure and if it matches the door... bump it up 3-5 PSI.

I take a certain long, sweeping on ramp at 70+ onto I-75 and the car feels stable as a rock. "Grounded to the ground" to quote a particularly retarded Toyota commercial. This goes for the 17" Michelin Primacy tires (great, smooth tire as Mark mentions) and the 18" Goodyear tires I now use.
 
I would describe my symptom as kind of sliding in my seat to the door when banking in a curve. I did not notice this in my Nissan Altima, but realize the Genesis is a different type of vehicle. Going to check my tire pressure this morning, and will consider the Michelin tires as another possibility per Mark's suggestion. My full warranty with the Hyundai dealer makes me feel better, and I may visit my dealer and simply ask them to let me test drive another Genesis on the lot to see if I can replicate the situation. It just might be a tire issue.

I guess "body roll" could be another way to describe this, but I don't think my vehicle is really doing this, but the feeling of my body (170lbs) being pulled to the outer door when in a curve is just more noticeable than I think it should be. Thanks everyone for your opinions, I appreciate all feedback that I have got so far.
 
A couple quick thoughts...

The Genesis can pull a lot of lateral Gs in a corner. Going 50 on an exit ramp rated for 35 is not a lot, but you can definitely feel it. So I can think of three major things that would make your Genesis feel more shove into the door than the Altima:

1) You are going faster in the Genesis because the overall handling is much better than the Altima's. (This is likely.)
2) The Genesis has more body roll than the Altima.
3) The Genesis seats are not as grippy as the Altima's.(less lateral support, flatter, leater vs. cloth, etc.).
 
Try putting a dry artificial chamois leather square on your drivers seat, tuck it thro the gap between the squab & back section..
That will stop you sliding around...Hope it works..:cool:
 
They are luxury cruiser seats and not sport buckets. You just won't be planted very firmly compared to a sport bucket seat.
 
I want to thank everyone who chimed in on my question. I now have various things to consider, but ultimately it may simply be that I need to get used to my new luxury ride. I will absolutely consider the Michelin Primacy MXV4 when it comes to needing new tires, thanks Mark and Zielritter for that input. Potty, I see you always try to give your honest and helpful opinion, thank you!

Wow Cool, your thoughts on the chamois might just do the trick, and G Captain, thanks for your help too. All others that I didn't mention, thank you for investing your time and responding with your thoughts. This forum is a great information source for us Genesis owners.
