  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just bought a 2012 3.8 premium package that had previous hail damage. The dealer told me that all had been fixed by the manufacturer and that they could sell it to me for $7000 off MSRP as a used vehicle. I saw the vehicle in person before I purchased it and you cant tell it had a scratch on it. I am the first owner and I have the full 10 year warranty on it. It only had 21 miles on it when I drove it off the lot. So far I have not had any problems with it and I can not find any evidence of prior damage. Does anyone else have a vehicle like this? Do you think this was a good deal?

By the way I love this website. I followed it for a year before I purchased my Genny.

Interesting. I had a conversation just this morning with my servicing dealer about a 2012 Genny 3.8 with hail damage that had 5 miles and he offered to knock off 7000.

Wonder how many of these there are?

whoa I'd jump over these in a heartbeat. They are still considered as new I believe. They have never been titled so the warranty would start after you sign the papers.

Why would it be a used car if it had not been titled and you are first owner? Is the 10-year warranty an extended warranty provided by the dealer? I guess I would suspicious about the claim that it has the 10-year manufucturers drive-train warranty if it is being sold as used.

I was very concerned about this also. The car came with a disclaimer that said it had been previously repaired. It did say on the factory invoice/window sticker to 'title as used'. I read in the warranty manual that since it has not been registered or titled that I qualify as the first owner thereby making the 10 year warranty effective on the date of purchase. I even made the dealer run a Carfax report to see if anything came up. It was all clear. It seems like I got a pretty good deal.

I would have asked for written clarification on that from the dealer or HMA. I would have thought that if it is titled to you as used, they don't really care what the name of the original owner is, and 5-10 years from now they may see that it was titled to you as used and not honor the 10-year power train warranty.

Actually I heard about the hail damage a couple of months back. Remember when the '12s were trickling in and folks in TX (like me) were complaining that all the other regions were getting them but we weren't? I talked about it to my salesguy and he explained that all the '12s on a cargo ship that had arrived in the TX port of entry had hail damage and wouldn't be arriving as originally scheduled. I remember being amazed that they could have hail damage in the summer. The big delay for TX cars involved moving a few from other regions, but mainly waiting for the next ship to arrive.

So it makes sense that they've fixed them up and are now selling them at a discount. Expect to see many dozens (hundreds?) of them for sale in the next few weeks.

Just a background FYI...

If you had hail damage or considering buying a Genesis with existing hail damage, please choose a qualified PDR (Paintless Dent Repair) specialist... and here's why:

My 09 Genesis was severely dimpled from hail damage last August.... over 700 dimples over the hood (aluminum), the roof (including chrome door trim and rain rails) and the trunk lid. The (re-adjusted twice) estimate was over $4,000 in hail damage. They tried to have the roof spackled with bondo and repainted with the first estimate... I fought against it and had it PDR'ed with the rest. The roof is sealed and welded in place... replacement would involve removing the front and rear windows and removing the interior before any cutting/welding is involved (according to a few repair shops)... and exposing future risks for water seepage/damage. Through those options, PDR is the lessor of the three evils.

In my case the salesman explicitly stated that the car would be sold to me as used. Since I don't keep a car more than 5 years (typically 3) I'm not sure that the 10 year warranty is that important. I was actually thinking of doing a lease and the salesman wasn't sure whether the vehicle was eligible or not. I like the Genesis -- okay love it -- but I keep getting reminded that the dealership network is the weak link. I don't care about the birthday card I get from the Mercedes dealer or the slavish hand holding I get from the Porsche service department, I do think though that it would be helpful to have as well informed a dealer as possible. As it happens I imagine I'll have to find out all of the facts independently and then present them in writing to the salesman if I wish to buy this vehicle. I guess I'm old school, but is it really so wrong to desire the salesman to show a little leg.....
