  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I was ready to purchase a 2013 Genesis that was involved in a front end collision and has a salvaged/rebuilt title in Arizona.
I had it inspected and it is mechanically sound and structurally decent, but not perfect.

My concern is the airbag light. The seller replaced the one deployed airbag in the steering wheel, but not the airbag control module and I understand that none of the airbags are going to function right now.

If the steering wheel airbag deploys and then is replaced, can the existing airbag module be reprogrammed or does it have to be replaced and then reprogrammed by a Hyundai Dealer?
The local Hyundai dealer gave a quote for 2 hours to remove and replace the module and then another hour of labor for programming = $390 labor.
I believe the airbag control module for the steering wheel, part number is 959103M350 and is between $500 and $700.

There are used modules on eBay and there are places that can reprogram used modules, but a non dealer mechanic that I had inspect the vehicle informed me that I would have to buy a new module and only a dealer could reprogram it. They said a used module with a different vin would not work.

I understand that none of the airbags will function when the airbag light is on.
My concern is if I spend a thousand dollars that the system may still not be clear of errors and require more parts and labor.

One other solution that I thought of is to buy a new airbag control module and then send it out for reprogramming and then install it myself.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

My response comes 2 years after original post but in researching answers to my own 2009 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 SRS issues I offer the following info.
The SRS airbag module aka crash module is located under the center console. It is specific to the car's VIN. A different module that does not match the VIN needs to be reprogrammed by the dealer.
However if one has the correct VIN/module then there are several services on eBay /internet that offer to erase the data on the crash module for around $50.
It is very important to erase or clear this data.
If the airbag light is on then no airbags will deploy.
If buying a used car, then I would hope, but could not assume the srs module is original to the car.
As to removing the center console a DIYer with minimal skills can remove the console and extract the module. There are YouTube videos that can walk you thru it.
Otherwise, the dealer pathway will cost you near a $1000 vs $50 pulling the module yourself.
