  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I plan to purchase a car this week. I may go down to NC to pick up a CPO 3.8 and Ultimate, for $38k with 9k miles, yet my brother offer to sell his 740 to me for $25k with 32k miles. I've presently been driving the 740 for the past couple days its nice but doesn't have so tech of the Ultimate Genesis, to include adaptive cruise and lane keep, though it does have a HUD.

I know for the price, the 740 is a pretty good deal. Yet it won't be as technically advance as the Ultimate.

Whats your thoughts, especially those who owned a bimmer in the past

Owned a few BMW cars in the past. While the driving fun factor and prestige are high I have noticed and felt the overall reliability is fairly poor.
I have experienced problems ranging electrical glitched to more serious engine problems (water pump, fuel pump, injectors, oil pump, fuel lines) just to name a few.
If i was to go back into "High Prestige Cars League) i would definitely steer clear of BMW products. Audi and even Benz seem to be more reliable options. Good luck with your decision!

I just got out of my BMW and will NEVER go back. I bought a loaded 2010 550i GT with only 9K miles on it in pristine condition. It was of course out of warranty. I spent $4k over the next 2 years on mechanical and electrical repairs. NEVER buy a BMW that does not still have a lot of warranty left on it. At $150/hour for repairs, it will burn up your cash in a hurry. I have had 3 Hyundais in the family and they have never been in the shop for anything but maintenance. They've been bulletproof. I love my Genesis!

Ditto about the typical repair costs for a BMW, and I'm addicted to the HUD and cooled seats. You might want to compare the amount information displayed on the HUD. Lane keeping makes long interstate trips more relaxing, and it nice to know smart emergency braking has your back. Autohold is good for resting your legs at traffic lights.

I have heard a lot of German vehicles being in the shop often and a hefty maintenance or repair bill.

Based on the two comments I may remain on my original goal, obtain a 2015 Genesis

I have owned both. Although I love my 2015 Genesis 5.0 I'd have to say there is nothing like a BMW when it comes to drivability and performance. If I have the opportunity to get a great deal on BMW I'd definitely would. BMW's have higher maintenance but since the one you are looking at is a 2013 with only 32k miles it should still have full warranty since they come with 4 years or 50k miles. In addition since its $12k less than the Genesis if you bought an extended warranty for the BMW you should stilll be ahead by $6k-$8k depending on how much you can get a warranty for. But if the price was the same I would say go with the Genesis.

Even though the G2/80 is a different class vehicle than the 7 series - I have had 2 7's in the past (78, 03) and was down to the wire on a 2012 740Li vs a CPO 2015 Genesis 3.8 AWD Ultimate. They were within 2k of each other on price... but to add b2b to 100k on each was a $3200 difference. Considering the 7 was already at 36k miles and the Genny was at 9500 - and it was loaded with everything... it was a no-brainer. Now a bit over a year later and more than 20,000 more miles and I couldn't be happier with my decision.

Now that the G90 is out... when I am done with my current car - that will be my first choice. Not the 7. I have adored the 7 for many years... and for me to have it unseated in favor of the G90 speaks volumes. It is hands-down the better buy.

I would get the Genesis Ultimate, lower miles, fully loaded, reliability, exclusiveness, list goes on. Those bimmers, although nice, are a dime a dozen and not really known for their reliability, as others have mentioned.

If I'm buying a Bimmer, it would only be their M division. Speaking of M division, a buddy of mine has a new M4, already been in the shop 4 times (and counting). Issues with his brakes, possible exhaust leak noise, and severe engine lag (to name a few).

Our cars are far more reliable, more technology and list goes on.
What we don't have is the badge but who cares about it...i have got a lot of double takes on my genny than any other previously owned car.
In terms of aesthetics i think Genesis looks sleeker than BMW 5 or 7 series.
