If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi All,

I am new to Hyundai. Never own one. My current car is Honda and it is really reliable. I am thinking of buying the 2013 or 2014 Hyundai Genesis with options. Just wonder what the difference between 2013 and 2014 Genesis? in term of reliability? The best car give the 2014 ranking #5. what about 2013 ranking? Are the 2013 as reliable as 2014? and over all, are Hyundai car reliable? thanks a lot.

The 2013 and 2014 Genesis should be "about" the same in terms of reliability. You should be able to get $8K off MSRP on a 2014 and about $9-10K off MSRP for 2013, but you should probably hurry, since they are getting rid of them as fast as possible to make room for the 2015's in a couple of weeks.

thanks guys for the quick replies. Are Hyundai car as reliable as Honda nowsaday?

I believe that Tommy is associated with Hyundai or its dealers some way, so keep that in mind.

The 2013/2014 should be fairly reliable, since no big changes since 2012. I am not going to make any claims in comparison to Honda. The biggest problems seem to be with the audio and electronic systems, which only have a 3 year warranty. If you get Tech Package, and want to keep the car for awhile, then it might be good to get an official 10 year - 100K Hyundai extended warranty that covers everything. You can buy them from any dealer, and should be able to get one for about $1200. The finance guy at your closing will offer one about for $2K or more, but skip that and get one later at another dealer online or via phone.

If you get the Base Trim model, the extended warranty is less important.

I've been a finance director at a Hyundai dealership for the last three years the warranty cost from Hyundai is $1050 they deserve to make some sort of a profit so 1200 is a great deal for a 10 yr hundred thousand mile bumper-to-bumper. BTW I paid 1051.00 for mine . And they can only use genuine Hyundai parts.

Does the warranty cost for the dealer vary depending on whether the car is the base model, or has a Premium or Tech package?

No , there are different coverages silver gold and platinum the only differences components that are covered platinum is the highest. And the difference might only be 100 or two so always get the platinum

The 2014 can be had with a heated steering wheel. From 2012 to 2013 there was a big improvement in the user interface on the tech package.

Welcome to the Forum new2genie I too am a Honda owner who is soon to buy a 2015 Genesis. I have been on this site since the spy pictures of the 2015 Genesis came out and have been investigating everything Genesis.

There is a lot of great information on here. I posted a link below that shows you everything that is different between the 2013 & 2014 Genesis. If your not interested in the new 2015 Genesis I would recommend the 2014 MY. Just my 2 cents from what I have read on here.

If you haven't seen the 2015 MY yet you might want to take a look at it first. It is due to hit the lots next month and has a lot of new bells and whistles on it. I have been following this car for sometime now. From everything I have read about it, it sounds awesome. I have seen it in person at the Fort Lauderdale Auto Show and all I can say is that the pictures don't do it justice. Seeing it in person is a whole new ball game.

Link to the 2015 Genesis that shows you everything it has to offer.

The biggest differences you'll find while shopping for a Genesis is the dealerships themselves; that'll be more important to your ownership experience than 2012 vs. 2013 vs. 2014. Hyundai dealerships vary from good to horrible, with an apparent higher-than-many-brands skew towards horrible. So research the various dealerships in your area for customer satisfaction. My dealer is okay but certainly not great. Beats the Mitsu dealer I used to deal with at least. My local dealer doesn't come close to the good treatment a former co-worker got at the local auto square Honda dealership (15 years ago... might have changed by now!) however. I'm pretty car mechanical savvy so I can tell when the dealership is trying to feed me a line of baloney; so far my dealer hasn't done anything that stupid. They don't go out of their way to be nice though, don't "while we were inspecting the vehicle we noticed so-and-so and tightened it up for you, no charge" like the Honda dealer did.

A lousy service dept. can screw up maintenance, damage or screw up other stuff while working a maintenance/repair job, etc. which will affect your car's overall reliability far more than the small design changes between 2013-2014 cars will.

Welcome to the forum. The 2014 has a few new features over the 2013, but otherwise they have identical sheet metal and major mechanicals.

TL/DR: Odds of flawless ownership experience with Honda > 50%, with Hyundai < 50%.

I owned two loaded Accord V6's back to back prior to my Genesis. Bought a 1997 new and drove it for 150k miles over 7 years, and then traded it for a 2004 and drove it for 110k miles over 7 more years. In the first 3/36 of each, I had exactly zero warranty issues. Even in the 4 year periods after the warranty was up, both cars had basically flawless reliability. Once the 1997 started showing issues at 150k (electrical, starter) in 2004, it was done and I dumped it. Likewise with the 2004 at 110k, I sold it prior to having to replace timing belt, brakes, etc.

Enter my 2009 Genesis Tech 4.6, purchased used in 2011 for $6k less than a new Accord V6 loaded. Showroom condition, and I mean perfect! More features, more power, WAY better looking, and had 3/36 remaining on its factory warranty! "What's not to love about that?!" I said.

All of the issues I've had with my Genny have been covered under warranty: 1 Door lock solenoid, 2 steering limit switches, 1 seat limit switch. I have had only one major mechanical issue, fixed under warranty. The ABS HECU unit failed while driving, causing the pedal to go to the floor. Now covered by recall, I have a good dealer who has always listened and took care of all of these issues without any hassle.

Bottom line: Hyundais are not Hondas. But they're better than most. If you expect perfection, stay with Honda because nothing else will compare. But if you're willing to live with an issue now and then, or are willing to extend the 5/60 bumper to bumper out to 10/100, then find yourself a good dealer and go for it.

I happily dumped a low-mileage Accord to buy my Genesis. Accord was hard-ridding and had a couple of problems/rattles that the dealer never could seem to fix. That was my first Honda and my Genesis is my first Hyundai. Hyundai service is the winner so far. It all depends on the specific dealer.

Is the 2013 genesis with tech package, 7k miles offered $33,000 otd a good deal? Thanks

Depends. Is it your must have color? Does it come with a CPO warranty? What best price did the dealer give you on a new '13, or '14?
