  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I want to change the oil myself but when I shop for an oil filter I notice there are two different sizes. One is 4.0 inch and a 5.2 inch. Which size should I use? Do the sizes make a difference?

Also, I want to switch to full synthetic oil. Anyone have any preferences as to which brand?

The correct part number is 26320-3C30A. Do not use an aftermarket oil filter, only use an OEM Hyundai part from your dealer parts department, or from on online dealer parts site like the following (run by an authorized Hyundai dealer):

Even if some of the aftermarket filters are OK, many of the suppliers have incorrect info about which filter to use. I know that many people are used to using aftermarket filters on the their other cars, and that is usually OK, especially the metal spin on type of filter, but the Genesis uses a cartridge filter and it must be exactly the correct size to work correctly.

If you buy online from the site above, you can get a discount. If you stock up on oil filters, engine air filters, and cabin filters, the shipping cost will pay for itself (usually there is no sales tax).

I would recommend Mobil 1 5W-30 for your engine. It is available from Walmart at a great price. Mobil 1 5W-30 Extended Protection (EP) is also good. About twice a year Mobil 1 has a rebate program for oil, and you can get about $10 rebate for every 5 quarts of oil purchased. I think the next rebate program is in the fall.

+1 on everything Mark_888 stated. use only OEM filters.

Still didnt answer the question lol could have measured oem filter or found info.

Not sure I understand the huge importance of an OEM filter. I understand the ten year warranty for first owners but I think as long as you're buying a decent filter it's not going to interfere with the warranty. Am I wrong?

Is this the 3.8 or 5.0?

Mahle makes the housing on the 3.8 engines and I'm sure the filter they make will be fine. These are simple filters.

I've compared all filters available for the 2019 3.8 engine and decided on the WIX. It's a quality, well made filter. The OEM filter is made of paper so not sure a buyer can do worse. There are a few name brands to choose from. I have attached photos of the WIX that I install on mine. They come with the gasket and washer.

Check out filters available on RockAuto.

the one i usually buy is fram extra guard i dont like it and i think i have found with other filters it seems to run better and faster. the fram says its 4.2 and k & n have 4 or 5.2. I believe the 5.2 would be way to big. maybe its for the turbo engine? i got an oil change done at mr . Lube and they put in a huge filter it was crushed and squished when i took it off. probably the 5.2 they put in it.

i found this the 3.8 is 4 inches long.

I own a 2013 Genesis sedan with the 3.8. I bought it with 40,000 miles as a lease return. It now has 129,000 miles. At about 90,000 miles, it began to run rough and stall at intersections or on a sharp corner. I took it to my trusted mechanic shop and he had the answer within 30 minutes. He told me these engines are VERY touchy with how you change your oil and what oil you use. I have always used Royal Purple full synthetic with their oil filters on all my cars. They don't make one for our engines so I used what I thought was a good aftermarket filter (I don't remember the brand now). The shop owner said you have to use only OEM filters and when using synthetic, you can't go 12,000 miles between changes like all synthetics say you can. He said there are not enough detergents in synthetics to keep the engine clean enough. He had the same thing happen to a customer's KIA with the same engine. He told me what happened was the variable cam actuators get gummed up and can't work properly under certain conditions and the engine dies. The only two choices for a fix are a top end removal to reach the actuators and replace them, or use only OEM filters, change the oil every 5,000 miles with a good quality non synthetic oil and add a quart of Marvel Mystery oil. I thought after I did a couple of oil changes, the Mystery oil would have cleaned out the gunk so I wouldn't have to use it anymore, so after the second change, I used all oil. It started dying on me again just like it did before, so I took it back to him. He said I would have to use the Mystery oil every oil change from now on. I speak from personal experience, that with these engines, it does matter which oil and filter you use and how often you change them. I've never had any other problems with the car.

Sorry to hear about your issues. There is no way I would ever run a engine to 12k with any oil. 6k is the max for me on synthetic oil. If your mechanic recommend Marvels it is probably to fix the sludge issues of running oil to 12k. I would never use Marvel in a car that did not have sludge issues. Just way to much unknown for me.

Good luck with the car.
