On my 2014 white Genesis, purchased new on April, 2014 which now has 23,000 miles.I Noticed today 7/24/17 that the Clear Coat on the top of the rear bumper is coming apart. There were also yellow streaks and dots on the bumper that appear to be under the Clear Coat. I brought this back to my dealer and was told told warranty on paint is 3 years or 36,000 miles. I asked about Good Will as I have recommended buyers to this dealer and was told they would submit it to Hyundau for approval. I found out from other sources that this problem exists especially on the Hyundai Coupe, and has been reported on other models. The yellow streaks and dots are an indication of the Clear Coat failure and spread under the Clear Coat. It is felt that this is caused by the bumpers flexing.
I was wondering if anyone has anybody thoughts, ideas etc?.Could this be considered anti-perforation, which is covered for 84 months. Or have there been any recalls on this problem.
ALL THOUGHTS ARE APPRECIATED THANK YOU

It is definitely not considered to be anti-perforation. Here is the Hyundai definition of perforation warranty:

"perforation (rust hole through the body panel from inside to outside) corrosion of original Hyundai body sheet metal due to defects in material or factory workmanship, under normal use and maintenance. Excludes surface corrosion."

When an open trunk lid is closed, especially hard, it usually hits the top of the bumper, so it is not unusual for there to be damage in that area. Some owners have had a clear plastic protector installed in that area.

That is not the case. It was noticed that many other forum posts by ownes hsve referred to Clear Coat damage. My car is kept in immaculate condition with rinsing and washing on a regular basis, additionally the car is waxed every 6-8 months.
I beieve attention should be directed towards the suggested causes I was informed
of.

I have a 2012 pearl white sedan with 39,000 miles, and the paint is still perfect on it. It stays garaged when not being driven. But the AZ sun is merciless and yet no issues yet. Keep up posted on your outcome.

It is not clear to me what you are saying, but what I said is the trunk often makes physical contact with the bumper when it is closed shut (especially if closed with any force). My bumper has some physical damage where the trunk lid has hit it. So that could account for the flexing of the bumper and possible clear coat failure.

I am sorry you are experiencing this. I have too clear coat peel. It is not huge but it still bothers me. To give me a piece of mind, I reached out to my good friends at 2jvinylworks.com Just wrap the car. Not only it will save the paint but it will bring a new look (or the same if you want to keep the exact color) to your Genny. Just did not feel like getting into a shouting match with my dealer (your wax is making it peel, your car washing methods are doing that, etc).

I have the same issue on my rear bumper, similar to what the OP described. I have a 2012 white pearl, about 56k miles. It started happening about 6 months ago. Original owner, love the car, and never post here. But for this case, it is disappointing. just sucking it up for now.

I have a 2010, also pearl white, 60k miles now. I'm the 2nd owner. Shortly after taking delivery of the car I washed it with dawn to strip the wax in preparation to apply Zaino. After the car was stripped I noticed the clear coat was peeling on the plastic inserts located on the front and rear bumpers. It is maddening for sure. My father-in-law owns a body shop so I'm going to eventually have the bumpers re-sprayed. His opinion is that it's a combination of substandard clear and improper prepping of the plastic bumpers. It's only the plastic inserts on the bumpers and people don't notice it. But I do. Weekly, everytime I wash the car!😠

And my car is indeed 4 years older then yours. But I've seen others with the same issue, same color, seemingly irregardless of model year. I'd think it silly not to begin to think there's more then coincidence going on here.

And my car is accident free. After I purchased the car I found out the previous, original owners were friends of my parents. The paint is immaculate with the exception of the previously mentioned clear coat damage.

My clear coat is peeling off the front grill surround, bumpers, rear bumper, side trim strips, and portions of the front and rear door openings. The car is white, like yours, and I have seen several other white Genesis sedans here in Los Angeles area with the same issues. My car is garaged, washed and waxed on a regular basis, is a 2011 that I bought new in May of 2011...Hyundai Corporate response....too bad....out of warrantee!!! The dealer, Harbor Hyundai, in Long Beach, California, refuses to advocate for me because I haven't been in for anything other than warrantee work....you see, I do my own oil and filter changes, and anything that needs attention, I don't run to the dealership, unless I can't fix it. So....the front of the car is turning yellow, and the clear coat is peeling off and blistering on all plastic exterior surfaces.....THIS IS KOREAN QUALITY....get used to it!!

If Hyundai corporate (Hyundai Motor America) has already reviewed the case and refused to cover it under warranty, there is nothing the dealer can do about it, unless you are expecting the dealer to fix it on their own dime (or give you some kind of discount on the repair). A lot of dealers outsource their body shop work anyway, so hard to discount it. Even if they don't outsource their body shop work to a completely different company, usually the holding company that owns multiple dealerships (with different brands) in the same area runs a single body shop for all the dealers, so each individual dealer has to treat the body shop as a separate company.

I wonder if there was a problem with the white paint specifically, since I haven't seen a "large" number of complaints about other colors.

If you are in CA you can always look at a small claims action. They can say the warranty is whatever they want, but if the paint is clearly failing much earlier than every other car out there then it is a defect. Go to a body shop and see what they say, if they can verify it was improper prep from the factory just file small claims. Hyundai USA is based in CA too so they won't be able to just not show up or blow it off. CA small claims goes to $10k in damages. This is a warranty of merchantability claim: you have the right as a buyer that the paint will conform to an ordinary buyer's expectation, and paint peeling after a couple years is not an expectation. CA law is very consumer friendly so 95%+ chance Hyundai will lose in court especially if you present your case well.

Small claims court could be a good idea in a state like CA. But just about buyer was presented with a form to sign at closing which stated that all legal issues will be decided by an arbitration company, and not taken to court. Most buyers probably signed it.

My 2014 is white but its a pearl white, is that what you are talking about

Does anyone have any pictures to show what this actually looks like?

Whenever "out of warrranty" go directly to Hyundai Customer Service for relief. Don't bother going through the dealer as the dealer quickly takes the "no". Try some reasonable negotiation.

When I took my Genesis into the dealer for evaluation of the paint peeling, I overheard the shop manager say that he has seen this problem on several white Hyundai vehicles here in Los Angeles area....my son subsequently told me that his Santa Fe had the same problem with the paint after a year of ownership, so he traded for a Toyota pickup....after the dealer repainted the problem areas on his Santa Fe...

im sorry to bring up an old thread but this yellowing crap has bled through my hood wrap. I am not happy at all!!!!! I dont know what to do really. I think it is messing up my roof wrap too....
No harsh chemicals used on wrap at all. Just Carnuba car wash. Besides removing wrap and repainting, does anyone have any suggestions?

Here's the deal: (and I put this in a sep thread as well)...we bought our 2012 3.8 new in June of 2011. With it we also purchased the SIMONIZE extended paint and finish warranty. We lived in AZ. Nothing harsh put on the car's finish, etc etc etc. We subsequently moved the car to central OH after 2014 and it's been here ever since.

Fast forward in 2016, just a few WEEKS before the warranty was going to expire, I noticed the discoloration under the clear coat on the front and rear bumpers. I applied for a claim against the paint warranty. I sent photos to Simonize and contacted a local paint shop that the local Hyundai dealer uses, and submitted the claim. They sent out an adjuster to look at it and they accepted the claim (for both bumpers it was rather expensive as I remember, but I never got the bill).... I got the bumpers painted that summer...actually several times because the paint guy had a hard time matching the pearl finish, but he got it, nevertheless. He said the original spotting under the clear coat indicated the surface was not prepped right when was factory painted.

Fast forward to summer 2017 - the clear coat the paint shop used started flaking and peeling. The owner inspected it and was not sure what happened but said he wold make good in it. He go this paint rep as well to look at it and it appeared they had a bad batch of clear coat. So it got repainted again, no cost. We had no copay or deductible with Simonize Warranty and got our money's worth out of it (we never pay retail for any extended warranty). If you are past the Hyundai warranty and have no other extended warranty, you're prob SOL. We also used, many times, the 'paintless dent repair' to remove minor dings and dents that you cannot tell were ever on the car now.

Anways, that's what happened. If you have a warranty, use it.

Blame it on water-based paints and coatings. Good old EPA.

What happens is that, at least as it did on my 2012 pearl white bumpers, is you will notice what looks like water spots will be UNDER the clear coat...as time progresses and they 'age' they will start to turn a yellowish brown and look blotchy. It sucks.

My 2014 is white but its a pearl white, is that what you are talking about
