  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

my 2015 head unit seems to be dead. At least that is what the dealership is telling me. They actually recommended I look for a used one instead of going through them at $3500. I found a 2016 unit for sale and am wondering it will work in my 2015. I know the unit didn't really change until 2017 but the 2016 technically has a different part number than my 2015. I am afraid to purchase and rip apart my dash without knowing if it's compatible. Any help would be appreciated.

Give me the part number for the 2016 you found.

You may just need to replace the internal SSD on yours. Moderate difficulty and only requirement is some knowledge of Linux and cloning from a drive image.

96560B1PG0 said it was from a 2016 genesis.

As far as my issue it started with sirius/xm radio freezing constantly and then weirdly my presets started disappearing and reprogramming themselves on a daily basis. About 2 weeks ago it froze completely. 90% of the time it boots to the genesis logo and never gets beyond that screen(the times it does get past that it just goes to a black screen). The last radio station I had on before it froze still works and I can change the volume but that is it. Bluetooth still works and I can play music from my phone through the USB but nothing on the screen. The backup camera still works as well. I tried the reset button and battery with no luck. I was hoping it was software issue or the Sirius/XM issue I have read about but without being able to get past the boot screen I am not sure what to try. I would greatly appreciate any help if you think it can be saved.

the 2015's have defective head units. They seem to crap out between 20K and 50K miles. Mine died a little after 40K and had to be replaced. Did the same minor odd things, then freezing, then blackouts, just got worse till a month or so later it was useless.

mine was nice enough to wait to crap out until after the warranty was up. on top of that, I got 4 different error codes firing at the same time saying that front parking sensors all had a short(still trying to figure out what that can be). Love the car but these electrical problems after it's out of warranty can kill you. You could tell the dealer felt bad calling me to tell me how much all of it was going to cost to fix.

I got my 2015 used and purchased an extended warranty that was bumper to bumper. I was still under factory warranty when it happened, but the aftermarket warranty covered it for me. The service advisor pointed out the head unit is excluded in the fine print of the 5/50 factory warranty, losing coverage after something like just 15 months, which tells you how much faith they had in it. The new one has lasted about 30K so far, never a hiccup.

Thanks that is what I was possibly thinking as well that it could be the hard drive. I read a couple threads on putting a new SSD in it. The dealer and one guy I found on the internet that says he can fix these units says it sounds like my issue might be a mainboard short somewhere but without ripping it out and trying it's hard to tell. Any thoughts on the product number I gave you on the 2016 model and if it would be compatible with my car?

I believe that 2015-2016 HU's are the same - When it became "Genesis" in 2017 they added CarPlay & Android Auto to the 9.2" jog dial. The newer unit is plug & play. Unfortunately, it looks for an updated amp on the CANBUS to make it all work. Sure that it's a software thing in the head unit, but no one has been able to spoof it....
