  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Second Generation 2015 3.8 sedan exhaust setup

Must be a big day for exhaust posts. I just posted that I'm having my custom shop modify a borla cat back system (made for the 09' thru 12" V8 #140377) to fit my 15' Genny V6 AWD. Mocked it up yesterday - with the exception of the "X" pipe having to be shortened several inches at the back end - It appears that it will fit. Even the hangers and flanges line up. Borla reported that they just didn't pursue the model upgrading because apparently there has to be a certain want for it ($$$). Details and photo's to follow...

...so I put on the 17159s today. Didn't bother with the X pipe because the space looked a little too tight. Drove home from the shop....

...and took them off 10 miles later. thank god I asked the muffler shop to mate them to the stock exhaust flanges so I could go back to stock easily. I put the stock units back on in my garage to avoid the embarrassment of going back to the shop with my tail between my legs. Thankfully this only took about 30 minutes with me on my back.

While the sound they produce is lovely, the AMOUNT of it, even with the windows closed, is too much, IMO, for a 'grown-up' sedan. I was hoping for Infiniti G35/37 stock exhaust notes, but these were far louder than that.

This video, which I thought was the 17159s with all the other stock parts removed, I suspect is just the 17159s axle-back, with the stock H-pipe and the two canister-style exhausts still in place. Clearly the stock equipment front of the rear axle doesn't do much.

The 17159s had no drone, that's true. Steady-speed cruising was silent. The second you wanted more speed, however...even with the windows up, the noise was considerable. I'm surprised at how little insulation there is between the passenger cabin and the exhaust area. I guess the car is silent because there's no noise coming from the stock mufflers.

Couple questions. Did you have your resonator removed? And what size piping did you use?

left the stock resonator in place, 2.5" piping. basically just unbolted the stock mufflers and had the shop add collars to the new mufflers so they'd bolt right into the stock position without any welding to the car's stock parts.

I'm in the same boat. Just want a LITTLE more burble while keeping luxury car aesthetics. Too old for car that can be heard 3 blocks away. Surely there has to be a reasonable solution. And spending $1200 for little HP gain just seems crazy to me....

I'd like the same thing as well... G37 type exhaust note.. although it will be fairly deeper with the V8 but something along those lines

The exhausts on a 4.6, 5.0 and 3.8 are identical. I've owned all three. Magnaflow exhaust fits, but it drones. Borla also drones. Dynomax VT mufflers are the "cure" for drone, but now seem out of production. I saw complaints about Dynomax VT's breaking internal exhaust flap spring, but my personal experience was well over 30K miles with no issues on Dynomax VTs.
Consider also a secondary cat delete kit from Motorsports Authority. Not legal in CA.

Yeah, I’m researching the snot out of this with no luck. I had 50 or so videos to watch when doing my f150 and nailed it. But THESE 🙄
